Mother Nature's Blanket

You've heard the expression "a blanket of snow?"

This is our small orchard of dwarf fruit trees
that we've constructed
a net fencing arrangement around
and over the top to keep the birds
from getting at the fruit as it starts to ripen.

Our recent heavy snow has built up
on the netting that forms
the "roof."

Looks to me quite like a heavy, white
winter blanket carefully placed
over the enclosure.

Mother Nature's blanket.

Beautiful, Mama Pea. We have a coverlet of white here now also. Not as much as you, but I live in hope that we soon will! Time to get out the winter boots and root out the woollies...

Great idea about the orchard net. Looks pretty neat with a snow roof!

Rosalea - Our temperatures are dropping this coming weekend which will really make it seem like true winter time. So glad we have this deep covering of snow as early as we do this year. Think nature's insulation!

Leigh - The first year we had the "cage" around and over these trees, we had a very determined and frustrated blue jay keep coming back to the net covering over the top and jump up and down and try to tear (at least it looked that way) the plastic coated wire to try to get at those red apples. The jays are such a gorgeous bird but they play havoc on ripening fruit and this time of year eat a TON of sunflower seeds!

Looks beautiful. We are getting more snow here today, and icy roads.

Great picture. Smart about the net. We don't have quite that much snow yet---but it is coming. We had some warm days last week so I put my outside lights up. I won't turn them on until after Thanksgiving but at least the work was done before the cold set in. xo Diana

I like to take off the netting as soon as the fruit has been picked, to let the insect and caterpillar eating birds in!!
Having said that it looks good snow protection when it gets heavy

Kristina - The icy roads are the one thing I really do not like about winter. I grew up into early adulthood in northern Illinois where most of the winter was full of ice. The snow never last very long, it melted and often turned to ice. Ugh.

NanaDiana - You were a very smart lady to put your outside lights up before your cold weather arrived! When outside doing most anything in the winter, it's my hands that get cold first. So hard to do many tasks with gloves on so you end up with ouchy fingers!

gz - I never thought of that! Sometimes we can be ignorant to the most obvious things. Thanks for sharing. :o)
