Always Trying To Stay Healthy

For the past couple/few months, I've been drinking a cup of green tea first thing upon arising.  Even before I make my daily latte.

Green tea is touted to be one of the healthiest beverages on our planet as it's full of health-promoting compounds.  Without getting too technically boring, it's said that it can help you lose weight (what? . . . how? . . . who cares?) and reduce your risk of several diseases including diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

So what's not to like about drinking green tea?  The taste of the stuff, that's what.

We've had several samples of different brands of green tea shuffling around in our tea cache for a long time now.  None of them have had a pleasant enough flavor for me to say I enjoy downing my morning dose.  I usually can't help but make a face or two until I reach the bottom of the cup.  Sorry green tea lovers, but that's how it hits my palate.

Then a week or so ago, I refilled my container of tea bags here in the kitchen from a brand we had in the pantry.

Yowzer!  The brand is Yogi Green Tea Kombucha.  And it has a pleasant taste!  The flavor is not anything like the kombucha I regularly make for our consumption, but it's teacups ahead of any other green tea I've been working my way through.

(All green teas do contain some level of caffeine, so if one is very sensitive to intakes of caffeine, it's best to be aware of that.  No amount of caffeine has ever had an effect on me, so that doesn't enter into my personal concern.)

Anywho, I just thought I'd share my discovery of a green tea that allows me to obtain my daily dose without grimacing.  Happy tippling!  (Of the healthiest kind.)

We love green tea too. I make my summer iced tea with it. I'll have to try the Kombucha one now. thanks for sharing.

Kristina - You know, I've never thought of making iced green tea! I'm much more of a "cold drinker" than a warm one so I really should remember to give the iced green tea a try this summer. I know I could drink it more easily that way. Thanks!

Absolutely agree about the taste. Im trying cos its supposed to be healthy but as someone who likes her Yorkshire tea with a dash of milk.. the flavour makes me shudder. So thank you for the info... I will have to try the Kombucha one x

Phoebes World - Yes, the flavor of most green teas made me shudder, too! (Good way of putting it.) And you're most welcome. :o)

I've been helping take care of old relatives for several years now. I've been inside nursing homes a lot lately. I'd rather have a stiff whiskey and die from it instead of living so darned long I might end up in one of those places....

Just kidding of course, but ... maybe not. Anyway, why not put the tea in your stiff latte? Two bangs for one buck?!

Cheers!

Tim - What?! And stand the chance of ruining my beloved latte??

P.S. By hook or by crook, I'm not ending up in a nursing home either!

You are a tougher woman than I, (or should that be 'me'?) Mama Pea! I've tried and tried, but yeah, the taste. Antioxidants are one thing, but there is a current ad running for a Bigelow tea with probiotics, how does that work? Wouldn't the boiling water kill the good stuff? We drank a decaf green tea for a while that was OK, but then I found out how it was decaffeinated, and that was the end of that!

Mama Pea said...

Rosalea - I didn't know they made decaffeinate green tea! (Guess it did nothing for the flavor though, eh?) And, yep, I would certainly think the probiotics in the Bigelow tea would be killed dead (!) with the addition of the boiling tea water. Hmmm, wonder just what Bigelow was thinking of? The decaffeination (is that a word?) of your green tea was probably a lot like we've found out about some decaffeinating processes for coffee. In other words, no good for humans to ingest!

I heard green tea was supposed to be a good diuretic and that is why it is associated with weight loss. Never worked for me lol. I am not much of a tea drinker except in the winter months and usually get the fruit flavors like peach, raspberry, etc. I can't drink caffeine after 3 o'clock or I won't be able to sleep that night so that is why I usually avoid green tea. However I might have to give this a try down the road. Thanks for the recommendation.

betty - It's so strange the way different people react to caffeine. I mentioned above that it seems to have zero effect on me, but like you, if my husband has caffeine after 3 o'clock (at the latest), he has trouble sleeping at night. As far as green tea being a good diuretic, well, I'll be darned. I HAVE definitely noticed that I am having to make more trips to the bathroom during the day than before! (But haven't noticed any weight loss. :o\) You're very welcome for the recommendation of the Yogi green tea that has a better flavor. :o)

I just can't get past the taste of tea or coffee. I do agree with getting healthier though. It's a struggle to make exercise a habit for me but I've done 4 days in a row on the exercise bike.

I haven't tried their green tea, but I absolutely love their Lemon Ginger. I drink it every morning, at least 3 or 4 cups, before I eat or drink anything else. It helps my stomach issues, and it just tastes delicious.

tpals - I say congrats to you on your 4 days in a row on the exercise bike! Making oneself do that good-for-you exercise is NOT easy. Okay, it IS good for us in so many ways, but still not easy. Keep up the good work!

Granny Sue - Lemon anything is good for us and I love it. I also know ginger is especially good for any tummy problems and digestion. Unfortunately, I can't (for some crazy reason) handle ginger. It gives me a headache and makes me slightly nauseated. Go figure! But it sounds as though the Lemon Ginger tea is a super drink for you and I'm glad it helps your stomach issues.

I actually like green tea, but usually with sushi!

Nancy - A good excuse to go out for sushi more often. One way to get in that good green tea! ;o)

MP check out Farm House Teas. Run by a sweet family in Oregon. I love it because it is run by a homestead family including their children and it has an amazing amount of product to see. I have ordered from them multiple times. The shipping boxes are outta this world and the prices reasonable and shipping is “speedy delivery “ as Mr. McFeely would say.

Goatli - I will check them out. Always eager to find a small business run independently by good folks. Thanks!

P.S. Good to hear from you and know you're still alive and kickin'! Hugs.
