And The Rains Came Down

We had heavy rains all day Wednesday night through Thursday.  I don't have an accurate measurement as I'd already taken in my rain gauge a week or so ago as in the past I have seemed to have a tendency to leave it out in the fall just a titch too long and have ended up with a cracked glass tube.  More than once.

We've heard estimates of somewhere around 5" of rain has fallen.

I didn't think it would happen this fall but our pond filled up to over-flow capacity.

This was the picture of the pond in my last post.

And this is the way it looks this morning.

Many trees in the area went down because of the super-saturated ground.

The only one on our property that affected us was this one blocking the end of our driveway.

Our temp has stayed above freezing so we've not seen any snow yet.  But because we're nearly to the middle of November, I'm sure it's coming!

Wow to the rain! Our snow started yesterday; always fun to see this years chicks encounter it for the first time.

tpals - I thought you might be seeing snow! Our chickens (young or old!) never seem too eager to step out onto that cold white stuff.

I can't believe your pond filled so quickly! Hurray!

That's a welcome sight! I know you must be relieved.

Michelle - I was very surprised the pond filled, too. As I've mentioned before, our land rises quite quickly behind us and we had what looked like small waterfalls coming down it. And, darn, of course some erosion, too. Also, because of the drought I'm afraid the ground was so hard that I wonder how much of the rain actually soaked in rather than just running over the top.

Leigh - We have a very light covering of snow this morning but the temp didn't get down into the 20s as predicted. All in all, we're very grateful for any precipitation we've now gotten.

Bet the ducks are happy campers!

Your pond looks wonderful! We had such a wind storm, and I was really glad that you didn’t get that. Have a perfect weekend!

Wasn’t that storm a doozy?! I was up in Massachusetts for a funeral and it hit there too. I think it hit the whole east coast at least the New England portion. Can you imagine how deep it would have been if it was snow? Wow!

Goatldi - All of us around here are happy campers! The best thing that could have happened before freeze-up.

wyomingheart - We did have a bit of wind (not awful/terrible) which is what caused so many trees to topple over . . . the moist, moist ground and then wind that hit them just the wrong way. Our heavy asparagus ferns in the patch finally got bent over which my husband likes because when they grow to their max, it blocks his view of the driveway from his desk!

Katie C. - Yep, we thought about how many inches of snow all that rain would have been. A lot more effort would have been put into clearing that kind of a snow amount than removing the one tree that blocked our driveway!

So..the rain dance worked! That is a lot of rain in a short period of time. The pond looks like it is about ready to overflow! Glad to hear that you all came through relatively unscathed.

That is a lot of rain! I'm always on edge when we get rain and wind, being surrounded by pines with those shallow root systems. That really is amazing how quickly your pond filled. I bet there were some happy quackers.

That's a lot of rain. With coolder weather there always chance of ice after rain.

What a lot of rain. Goodness, I am glad you didn't get flooded, although that poor tree. Good news for the pond though. We had sleet Saturday morning here, but a lot of places in WV had snow.

Rosalea - The pond water is indeed up to (and flowing out of) the overflow area which keeps the water from destroying the bank around the pond. No rain since. Or snow although for the past couple of days we've had gray weather and lazy snowflakes falling (but not piling up) intermittently.

Susan - Lack of much soil (lots of rocks though) is a problem as it is by you. Almost any good wind or heavy rain causes many trees to topple over. Guess the roots have trouble penetrating bedrock!

Lisa - And I do not like ice! Fortunately, that didn't happen here this time but I did comment to my husband as we looked out on what looked like lakes all around our yard that I sure hoped it didn't freeze that way for the winter. That would have been bad!

Granny Sue - Snow already in WV?? What's happening with our weather? The past few years there has been more inches of snow in the southern part of our state (Minnesota) than up here in the very north where we are.

oh, think on it! 5 inches of rain is 5 feet of snow! Do I have that calculation right?? I love snow.
