Rain, Rain, Go Away

Come again another day.  It rained sporadically yesterday morning.  Rained all last night.  Rained this morning until about 11 o'clock.  You can turn off the faucet anytime now, Mother Nature.

Thankfully the temperature has dropped a few degrees so it doesn't feel so oppressively hot and humid.  Just humid right now.

When Papa Pea came in from doing some necessary tasks outside mid-morning, he said even the ducks looked wet.  It's not a problem though because all the poultry have the choice of spending these wet days inside dry pens if they wish.  The geese and ducks would just as soon be out in the elements.  The chickens . . . not so much.

It's nearly noon now and I've got some B-B-Q'd duck meat I've pulled out of the freezer heating up for lunch sandwiches.  Still have oodles of cucumbers and cherry tomatoes so I'll made a cuke/tomato salad as a side dish.

A pan of Apple Slices is cooling on a rack on the counter, but they'll be too hot to slice before dessert for dinner tonight.  Or they may be cut into for "someone's" afternoon coffee break if "someone" has anything to say about it.  I don't drink coffee after my morning latte and find if I eat anything at afternoon coffee break, I'm not hungry come dinner time.  And when the cook isn't hungry, the cook doesn't want to cook.  At least that's the case for this cook.

Made a pot of Cheddar-Cauliflower Soup this morning with some of our cauliflower from this year's garden harvest.  This particular soup is always better the second day so that will be for sometime tomorrow.

The Swiss chard in the garden is abundant enough to make another Green Pie.  As soon as it dries out a bit (maybe by next June) I'll go harvest some.  After putting on hip waders.

Seems I've been ignoring desk-type tasks lately so I'm bound and determined to work on them this afternoon.  (Somebody hold me to it, please.)

My List (which I keep on an 8-1/2" x 11" tablet) has one side devoted to "Inside" and the other to "Outside" items.  You can tell we've shifted (primarily) out-of-summer-into-fall mode because the "Inside" half of the paper is now longer than the "Outside" half.  Guess that means I won't have any trouble keeping myself busy until the weather changes in such a way that being outside is a smidge bit more desirable.

Hi Mama Pea :) I love the cauliflower and Cheddar soup combination! I have to make that. I think I still have some frozen cauliflower...I just need to wait out my first Cheddar! :)

We have not had the rain you have...I wonder when it'll reach us. It's just been sweltering hot and humid, but there are thunderstorms tomorrow in the forecast, so it should break the heat wave then it's back to fall weather and thoughts of Thanksgiving and Halloween. :)

Your rain may be visiting us soon. You also reminded me I have Swiss Chard to blanch and freeze. I am hoping to dig some potatoes for dinner too.

I like the idea of that green pie. I have one healthy chard plant - the volunteer, not the lone surviving (barely) one from seed - that is calling out for cheese. Please feel free to send your rain in our direction. We have not had a drop of rain since the 9th of September. It's either feast or famine around here.

Oh MamaPea - we had rain all day yesterday and into the evening. Its sunny today. But they are promising more moisture for the weekend. Bah. I am a cook just like you, if I am not hungry I don't want to cook! I hope you dry out soon!

Rain - We had the Cheddar-Cauliflower soup today I made with frozen cauliflower and it was just as good as when I've made it with a fresh head. Hooray!

I know you love the heat, but we here do NOT! (So why do I complain about not having enough heat for my warm weather crops to grow?!!) Today was supposed to be sunny, but as usual, we had a couple of period of light rain. At least nothing to stop us from what we were trying to do.

I say bring on the Thanksgiving and Halloween weather! Cool, crisp autumn!

Kristina - I've held myself off from digging even one potato yet . . . but I sure am hungry for them!

Susan - The Green Pie really is delicious and with all the cheese, everyone likes it and gets a bushel of good greens in their tummies!

Oh, if I only could send you any more rain we get! We have had PLENTY!

MrsDM - It really is strange but when I'm not hungry, I have a TERRIBLE time getting a good meal on the table. If I lived alone, I'd probably just snack on potato chips. (Bad, Mama Pea, bad!)

Mama Pea,

Oh, I so hear you on rain, rain, go away! We've had enough to last us through the rest of this year.

I've never had cauliflower cheddar soup, that sounds really good. I've made just cauliflower soup using the entire cauliflower (including some of the green shell), veggie broth, a little heavy cream, Swiss and Mozzarella cheese, salt and pepper.

Hugs,
Sandy

Sandy - Your soup sounds much like mine . . . except for the kind of cheese!
