Land O' Goshen, We Did It!

We finally (finally, finally, FINALLY!) got started putting up our wood supply for next winter.

Geesh, I didn't think we were ever going to get at it.

We like to have both of our wood sheds full to the brim by the end of April each year.  Sure didn't happen this year . . . mainly because the month of April was too wet, and there was still too much snow on the ground to make it safe for wood working.

Then at the end of April we both succumbed to those ugly-bugly germs that took us out of commission for three weeks.

Then it was "as soon as I get the garden in" or sixty-five other things that kept us from starting on our wood supply.

But yesterday we finally made a start at it and, "the good lord willin' and the creek don't rise," we plan on staying with it the majority of our waking hours all the rest of this week.

The above shows the very back of the smaller of our wood sheds starting to fill with cut and split wood, but it's a start.  As hubby is fond of saying, "It's better'n money in the bank."  Hopefully, we'll be making many more deposits (pun intented) in the very near future!

After reading this, I just added stocking up wood to Hubby's to-do list. We still have 2 trees that need knocked down and cut up, not to mention more wood to pick up. I have a feeling this summer will go fast. Hopefully, the next winter won't be so brutal.

With the price of propane rising astronomically during this past winter, wood IS money in the bank! -M

Kristina - It seems we're constantly having to take down dead or dying trees here on our place. Before we even started on the wood yesterday, we took down a big dead popple that was leaning right for the wood working area.

If you ask me, summer is ALREADY going fast. Each year when 4th of July hits I cringe because it means summer is half over already. Oh, well, all we can do is the best we can do, eh?

M - No question we all "work" for our wood, but it sure doesn't hurt the bank account as much as buying propane does!

I've ordered some green wood - getting started on the supply for the 2015/16 winter. It would be nice to have access to woodland but I know the amount of work involved would be daunting.

I bet you are sleeping better...there's nothing like a good workout, right?

I have enough (I hope) wood from last year to last through this coming winter ... after my house was fitted with double paned windows and 2" rigid foam under the new roof, I don't burn as much wood as I use to. Love wood heat, it seems to really soak into the old bones ... LOL

tpals - We have lots of potential firewood in our own woods but to be able to harvest it, we would have to have a tractor of some sort and rudimentary "roads" through the woods. It's good to know the wood is there, but for right now we order cords in 8' lengths delivered to our back wood working area by one of the local loggers. And we're happy to be able to get it!

Susan - You would think! I woke up at 3:30 this morning, went out to the couch with a book thinking I would read and get sleepy. I was still awake when the 5:30 alarm went off. Sigh. Guess I didn't work hard enough!

mtnchild - Yes, wood heat is very different than any other kind. It just feels so much better. Glad you were able to get your home retrofitted so it stays warmer with less wood!

I love a real fire but here everyone seems to want those horrible natural gas ones because they are so easy. You two work so hard. I imagine that if you got it all done you'd just go find more work to do!

Sparkless - I so agree with you! I know lots of people love the natural gas fireplaces but I'd just as soon do without. I mean what's the point? I can turn on my gas cooking range and watch the flames on one of the burners if that's all the ambiance I want. And the warmth they put out doesn't begin to rival a real wood fire. Okay, off my soap box now.

If you knew the length of the list of what we really need to get done this summer, you'd think we were crazy. Good thing neither of us minds hard work! ;o)
