Snow Arrived, Winter Is Here

From Sunday morning until Monday morning, we had an impressive snowfall.  Winds gusting up to 50 mph (and it certainly felt like that) formed drifts that required lots of shoveling and work with the plow truck.  Our guess is that we got about 9-10" of snow, but there were reports of up to 18" in other parts of the county.

The temperature this morning is -3°, so there's little doubt winter has arrived.

We had a big tree succumb to the power of the winds.  Unfortunately, it landed in a bad spot.

This is (was) a fabric covered shelter that we've used for storage of hay and straw bales, our 4-wheeler and miscellaneous other things.  We intentionally snuggled the storage shelter into the woods to protect it from the wind.  Bad idea.

The power of the wind can wreak havoc and what sometimes seems like a reasonable plan proves otherwise.  Could have been a lot worse.

Wow! We have had a few pine trees blown down, and they are tall. I worry one will land towards the house, but so far they have not. We have to cut them up and remove them, but I think buying a wood chipper would be a good idea (if we can find an affordable one). Your weather sounds colder than ours. We woke up to a wind chill of 11 degrees this morning.

We were all melted off and mild again. Temperatures in the 40s for a few days. Yesterday was dreary, rainy and really windy. The winds quit over night and this morning we woke up to 8 inches of snow. Surprise! 27 degrees.

Kristina - A couple of years ago we went in with our good neighbors and bought a really nice chipper/shredder. It works very well, but because of the cost we probably wouldn't have gotten it if we'd have had to pay full price. A real advantage of having wonderful neighbors! We're supposed to have bad wind chill factors for two more days, then a "warm up."

SmartAlex - The weather in your neck o' the woods has sounded like up, down, and back forth again!. Now 8" of snow?? At least you didn't get ice from the rain yesterday.

That seems an unusual break – good-sized tree in a stand of trees! Glad it didn't damage more.

Michelle - That's the same I've been thinking. It was the tallest of the trees around it so perhaps it was the only one the terrific winds could get a hold of. :o(

Wow - It sure came upon your area quick. Am always amazed at your posts. One day..not too cold or extreme. Next day...WHAM!!! Don't think I could hack it there but admire you both for all the many years you have endured it. Hubby wants to move to Florida's island coast (east and on the Gulf) but it terrifies me. What...no drought, no snow, no way out but that "little" bridge? Help...and would appreciate comments as he is SERIOUS!

Anonymous - Yes, we're used to dealing with the weather here in northern Minnesota, but I know nothing about the Florida area of which you speak! Good luck hoping you and your husband can come to a decision you're both happy with. :o)

Ugh! a mess to clean up for sure.

We have no snow yet - but we are on the Atlantic coast, more south than you. If we get one good snow (more than 6 inches) in a season, we are lucky. (I like snow so “luck” is maybe not a word others would use.)

Retired Knitter - Even if you do get your one good snow a winter, I'm betting it melts pretty fast. But wouldn't it be lovely to have that snow right at Christmas time? (If you didn't have to travel, of course!)

We've got some storms like that coming in our mountains here in the next week with several feet of snow. So sorry about the wind damage! Hope hopefully you can repair your structure?

Nancy - Papa Pea and I have (so far) managed to avoid the subject of whether the structure (framing mainly) can be repaired or if it will be a total loss. I think we're both still trying to figure out how to get what's left of the length of heavy tree trunk off the plastic without destroying the plastic. Can't cut the tree up anymore where it lies! We'll figure it out though. :o\

Ouch! It couldn't have gone 6' to either side of course. I've been hoping for snow (in the NW,) am antsy for it this year for some reason so living vicariously through your blog :-)

OOPS! That isn't good. Hope you can get the tree off and keep the fabric intact. Of all the types of weather, I dislike wind as it can be so destructive.
