It Doesn't Have To Be Sunny . . .

It's gray.  It's dismal.  It's been raining steadily all day.

Now at only four o'clock, it's looking like dusk is approaching quickly.  Inside the house it could hardly be more comfortable and cozy.  It's a great day.

Lucky, lucky us to be able to enjoy a day like this so close to home and hearth.  I must admit I've been thinking of curling up on the couch and watching a DVD (or three) ever since finishing breakfast this morning.  (What weather could be more conducive to that than this which we're currently having?)  But I haven't quite made it yet.

I baked a batch of blueberry/raspberry muffins before breakfast this morning, then got the laundry started.  Made a big pot of potato soup for lunch.  Lots left over for a couple more meals this week.

Got thawed venison from the freezer browned and then simmering on the stove with seasonings for Swiss Steak for dinner.  Combined with mashed potatoes, gravy and Brussels sprouts, we will have a tasty meal tonight.  (The slow cooking meat is making the house smell pretty darn good all afternoon, too.)

Both hubby and I have gotten a little damp when going outside to do what needed to be done at one time or another today, but fortunately we've dried out quickly and it hasn't kept us from enjoying this lovely November day.  It doesn't have to be sunny to be a good day.

Now.  Wonder if I can get in half a movie before dinner time?  The couch and quilt are calling me . . .

This is one of our first dreary fall days today.....not looking forward to more of them, but I suppose it's all in how you deal with it. And it seems you're dealing quite well, potato soup & all :)

I love days like that. I light a fire. Grab my book and quilt and curl up on the sofa. Add the cat and a good cup of coffee and I am in Heaven.

Carolyn - Dreary, rainy days have always energized me. (Don't know why, but 'tis so.) I can remember even as a grade schooler, loving days at school when the weather was dark and wet. Gave me a whole different feeling about "book learnin'"!

Michelle - Right on! You've got the recipe. ('Cept my drink would be a cold one.)

At least it has cooled off enough here I can light a fire in the wood stove, another month and they will put burn restrictions in place but at least I can enjoy my fires for now. Comfy quilt and either a cup of tea or hot cocoa and I could be happy.

Sounds like a pretty relaxing day... I am in the mood for muffins (maybe blueberry). Hmmm do I have the energy you seem to have? Nope, I'll live vicariously through your post.

I THINK I AM IN THE MOOD FOR APPLE CRISP. THE APPLES I PICKED THIS YEAR AT MY SISTERS WERE TO SMALL I SENT THEM ON THERE WAY ,BUT I DID GET A HOLD OF A FEW TO MANY THAT NEED A RECIPE ATTACHED TO THEM

We've had ONE day of sun in 3 weeks. Doesn't bother me-I am now in "indoor" mode. And as long as it isn't pouring buckets, we still manage a long walk and time outside.
Muffins sound like a good idea! I can "break in" the new bowl on them when we get home later today.

I've been baking here too. With it getting dark faster, I too, am feeling settling down for some movie time. The dinner sounds delicious.

Love days like that, most especially when home to enjoy. We've got the rainy dreary day plus 25 mph winds to boot. Instead of staying home I had to come to work. Boo Hiss. Glad you are able to savour the day, hope you get that movie in soon.

Mama Pea,

Enjoy watching a little bit of your movie before dinner.
Potato soup sounds delish, can we come over to your place for dinner??

Tombstone Livestock - It must feel WONDERFUL to you to have it cool enough for a cozy fire in the wood stove! Can you begin to forget the awful, terrible, yucky HOT summer you just made it through?

Simply Scaife Family - No rain here today . . . but not much sun either! Damp and windy. Oh, well, it IS November. :o}

Akannie - We are on the same soup kick! In October when I did the push for having some time off in November, I made a big batch of minestrone for the freezer. (What shall we make next?)

Ruth - You can't fool me . . . I'll bet you DID make those muffins!

judy - Heck, this time of year puts me in the mood for apple pie, apple crisp, apple cake, apple slices . . . you name it and I'll eat it!

Sue - I had a lovely bowl like you just got. It was a hand-me-down from my MIL. But my MIL's son (who shall not be named here -- ahem) dropped it. All gone. And I've missed it. :o(

Kristina - I know the darkness and "long" evenings bother some people, but I love 'em. Perfect for reading or quilting or knitting or movie watching!

DFW - Yeah, that having to leave home for work is the pits! Keep working toward that retirement date. I know you'll enjoy it!

Sandy - I made a double batch of the Swiss steak so you really could have come for dinner! I saved the leftovers to make stew with. (Still haven't gotten in my movie time, but maybe yet today.)

One can only take so much sunshine. I will admit that one of the reasons I love winter is that there are those grey, cold days that make being inside with a warm quilt (or a dog or two) and nice cup of tea, a fire in the fireplace, just this side of heaven.
