Full Steam Ahead to a Perfect Weekend

After the Thanksgiving festivities ended last night, I decided I was going on a mental health/handwork break for the next three days.  And the weather couldn't be more conducive to just that!

We got our first snow of the season over night!  Only about 3" but lots of blowing and a few drifts around and about the house and out buildings.  Temp dropped to the low 20s and we're supposed to stay there (during the day . . . into the low teens at night) for the next week.  Hubby made a trip up to the storage loft first thing this morning to bring down our heavy Sorel footwear.

I think this is the first year in quite a few that we've had snow cover before Christmas.

Now it really feels like time to get these guys and the rest of the fall/Thanksgiving decorations packed away and bring out the Christmas things.  Hubby and I even came to an agreement as to where to put a little tree this year.  The previous location is no more because of the remodeling.

I have oodles of leftovers (a BIG advantage to hosting Thanksgiving Dinner) to package up for the freezer.  We both really like turkey and will have no trouble using every last little bit of it.  The turkey carcass and all least desirable parts are simmering on the stove this morning to make several containers of rich broth.  Can you smell the divine aroma?

Christmas music is playing on the stereo and I'm heading into my quilt room.  My new holiday wall hanging is sandwiched . . . but not one stitch of quilting has been done on it.  I hope to make big progress on that particular project within the next few days.  And I'd like to finish up the binding on the holiday potholders I'm making for little gifts.  And complete the knitting on my blue sweater.  And quilt the new holiday shower curtain I started (how many?) years ago.  And lie on the couch and read.  And watch that Netflix movie I've had for two weeks.  And give myself a much needed pedicure.  And . . .

Bye.  Gotta go start having fun!

  1. Oh, how idyllic it all sounds! And you have snow, too! You inspire me to hit the sewing room, as well. So many projects waiting for me there - and no football! Tomorrow is the big Civil War game between Oregon and Oregon State - a perfect time for me to retreat and work on hobbies long neglected.

    1. 2 Tramps - Yep, we never seem to squeeze in enough time for sewing (or other hobbies) in the summer time so NOW is the time to get in the habit of getting that handwork goin'!

  2. Hey...I smell turkey too @;) Love the snowfall pics. That really gets me in the mood. We're 68 and sunny today and I just spent a dusty morning raking up leaves. Looking at your pictures though makes me want to smell that cold, fresh snap of air.

But Brrr...MP! Teens and 20's?! I'll stay here and dream of a white Christmas thank you very much!

    1. tami - Looks like there were several of us making turkey broth today!

Come on now, don't be such a wimpy little southern gal! If you have a warm house during the winter and warm clothing to wear when you want to be outside, living up here near the tundra is no problem at all! (What? You're not buying it?)

  3. I wish I could pop in for a sew-in day. I bought 13 yr old a potholder & oven mitt fabric she made mitt and quilted potholder but the binding we bought doesn't stretch around corners and I'm stubbed on how to finish it correctly. Annoyed so I moved on to other things.

    1. Lisa - Would I ever like it if we could spend a sewing day together! And darn, if you were here I could show you how to make that binding go around the corners likety-split. (Why the heck are all we like-minded ladies spread all over the country? Just think of what we could accomplish if we were within visiting distance!)

    1. Kelly - This snow took us by surprise. One day it was bare ground (and even some green grass!) and 24 hours later it looks like we may be covered with snow until April!

  5. Love the snow on the pumpkin pics. No snow here, just lots of wind, which ignighted the neigbors ash pile. Two fire trucks and 2 squad cars at 10:30 last night. Leaves in the woods were on fire. A bit scary, could have been worse. Enjoy your down time!

    1. dr momi - Oh gosh, that is so scary to think of a fire getting out of control . . . especially with strong winds blowing! Glad it didn't turn into something worse.

I had a great day today . . . and I really took most of the day (put food on the table a couple of times) to do some hand quilting. (And I'm gonna do it again tomorrow, so there! ;o] )

  6. Wow you got a ton of snow. We had some snow too but not enough to stick to the ground. Have a nice break. I hope you get all the fun stuff you've been putting off done....ummm that didn't sound right. Your fun stuff is on your to-do list now? LOL!

    1. Sparkless - I got much more hand quilting done on my new Christmas wall hanging today than I thought I would. I may actually get it done in time to hang soon!

  7. I've got turkey stock simmering away as well so I CAN smell that lovely aroma! No snow here, just cold and windy... but still good for a day of sewing but that may have to wait until tomorrow. I'm still trying to finish dishes and put away things from yesterday's festivities.
Hope you get a lot done! Happy Sewing Day!

    1. Judy - We've been eating on leftovers all day today and I haven't taken the time to package up what I should for the freezer. I'd best do that tomorrow morning right after breakfast.

Hope you make it into your sewing room tomorrow!

  8. We're heading down to the 20's tonight too...got cold and blustery today, after 65 yesterday.

I have 7 quarts of stock in the canner, made some gravy with some and have enough still to make a batch of soup. A good day for all of it, and I don't have to leave Honeysuckle Hill if I don't want to. (I DON'T !!) lol

Went to my brothers and brought their turkey carcass home too. Cooked one myself. And won another turkey in a drawing at a local merchant. Feeling rather turkey-rich.

    BTW--what are Sorels ??

    1. Akannie - Whoa, 65 yesterday and down to the 20s tonight? That's a little harsh.

I put my HUGE pot of broth out on the back porch for the night and I'll finish it off tomorrow morning. I'm being lazy and freezing quarts of it rather than canning.

Google "picture of Sorel boots" and you'll see what they are. Everyone up here wears them because they're the warmest footwear you can find. The traditional ones have felt innersoles (about 1/2" thick), are waterproof rubber on the bottom and leather on the top. Like so many things, there's now an off-shoot line of them that are more trendy and classy looking . . . that young people wear with shorts . . . give me a break! The Women's Altrec style is very much like mine.

    1. Quilter Kathy - I was really pleased to see the snow because once the leaves go, our scenery is so gray and barren . . . until the snow comes and makes a winter wonderland.

I still plan on stitching and relaxing the weekend away. Today was so much fun, I'm determined to do a repeat tomorrow!

  10. It sounds great. I spent the day putting up Christmas decorations and watching the snow fly!! Or should I say blow. But, it's white and wonderful. Bring on the christmas music!

    1. Sue - My changing of the decorations is going to have to wait until first of the week 'cause I'm very busy taking time off this weekend! Sounds like you have exactly the same kind of weather we do. How many inches of snow did you get?

    1. Ruth - Yikes! I think winter is here! We awoke to at least 3 more inches of snow this morning. Actually, it's beautiful and I'm welcoming it with the start of a slower, relaxing, restorative feel to everything around here.
