A Thanksgiving Wish

Times they are a'changin'.  At least weather-wise for sure.

Here's another Thanksgiving that I was (perhaps foolishly) hoping we could ice skate on the pond.  Not going to happen.  Not even close.  Our day time temperatures have consistently been in the 40s and dropping into the 30s overnight, but many nights not even freezing.

Okay, so the mild weather thus far this November is something to be thankful for.  None of us around here are spending great amounts on heating fuel whether it be gas, oil or wood.

There is no snow on the ground.  We haven't even had a light covering yet.  Haven't had to spend time moving snow.  No ice even to contend with this early winter season.  That's something not to be overlooked when being thankful.

Growing up in Illinois I can remember many Thanksgivings with enough snow on the ground for us kids to go out and play in.  Likewise in the late 70s and early 80s up here in northern Minnesota.  By this time of year we were often well into winter time.  Hubby just today reminded me of one Thanksgiving night when the temperature plummeted to 25 degrees below zero.  Times they are a'changin'.

I'm thankful to be able to spend the day tomorrow with family and friends in a warm, secure home.  I'm not forgetting to be thankful that we have the wherewithal to purchase the food (or have it tucked away in the pantry) we will eat.

My Thanksgiving wish for you all is that you get to spend it with loved ones in a way that is enjoyable, relaxing and happy.

My Thanksgiving wish for myself (selfish little bugger that I am) is that next year, somebody else makes dinner.  This year (and not for the first time recently) I'm just plumb-done tired of all the preparations involved.  As soon as I post this, I'm going to write myself a (strongly worded) note to put in my planner for next November as a reminder to orchestrate things differently next year.

Wonder if I could arrange for ice on the pond, too.

  5. Happy Thanksgiving Mama Pea.
My mom only cooks the bird now and the rest of us have to bring a dish or two. We all help clean up afterwards. It makes it much easier for her and she gets to cook what she likes to and have her three daughters help clean up afterwards.
If any of us had a big enough house to host the supper we would but my parents are the only people with a home big enough for everyone.
Anyway I hope next year you get your wish for Thanksgiving and get to relax and enjoy it instead of spending all day slaving over a hot stove.

    1. Sparkless - When everyone does part of the preparation that really helps. Sounds like your family has a good plan going. Keep it up!

  7. Well no matter what you and Papa Pea do tomorrow have a Great Thanksgiving. I like the idea one person cooks the bird rest bring something, and whoever has the biggest house gets to host. I am going to closest daughter's house, she volunteered to cook. I am just taking snacks.

    1. Tombstone Livestock - I love snacks! Could make a whole meal of them . . . but that probably wouldn't be the most nutritious meal, would it? :o}

Enjoy your day at your daughter's. Happy Thanksgiving!

  8. No ice on the pond here, either. Temps in the low 20s at night, 40s during the day. I'm not complaining. I am hoping that everyone else pitches in and cleans up so that you can prop up your feet after dinner and relax and enjoy yourself. A very Happy Thanksgiving to you, Papa Pea and Baby Pea, from your Sweezie in NY. xoxoxo

    1. Susan - Thanks, Pal! We're planning a (no doubt) wild tournament of ping pong in the garage after our 5 o'clock dinner. There will be a couple of cut-throat players involved who do not consider losing an option. Then back in the house for dessert . . . pumpkin pie and/or lemon cheesecake with rhubarb sauce. It will be a good get together and I hope yours is the same. Even if no ping pong is on the agenda! (Drive safely, ya hear?)

  9. Happy Thanksgiving! It's been a warm and dry autumn here in CO.

IMO, it's A-OK to switch things up a bit when it comes to holiday traditions.

    1. LindaCO - Weather-wise we got a Thanksgiving surprise in the forecast today. Although it's semi-sunny and in the mid 30s now, they say we are to expect dropping temps thru the day, high winds and 2-5 inches of snow tonight! Hoping this doesn't make for bad travel conditions for those away from home for the holiday.

Next year when I announce I'm going out for Thanksgiving Dinner, if anyone objects I'm gonna tell 'em you said it was A-OK. Thanks for the support, Friend!

  10. I am with you on this - so much work goes into it all. Just two of us here and when it we finally sat down to eat I realized I would have been just as happy with a TV dinner. The best part of the day was going to the mountains to look for a Christmas tree. Next year if we do a turkey, it will be the day before and we will pack a lunch and get out hiking on Thanksgiving day.

  11. 2 Tramps - A packed lunch while hiking sounds like a WONDERFUL way to celebrate Thanksgiving Day. Let's remind each other next year that it's okay to break tradition . . . and maybe start an even better one!
