A Family Portrait

Baby Pea (aka Chicken Mama), Papa Pea and Mama Pea

Well, yes, the black flies were very bad today.  What makes you ask?

Are you the middle one or the short one? (I'm assuming the tall one sporting camo is Papa Pea.)

Mama Pea said...

Reading left to right, tall daughter who takes after her tall father (who is in the middle in the camo bug shirt), and then the runt of the litter: me. ;o)

Just like us three now (and I'm not short at 5'8"!).

Very fashionable! Enjoy your weekend! -Jenn

Mama Pea said...

Michelle - You've got about 3" on me! Daughter is pushing 5'9".

Wendy - There wasn't much humor going around yesterday when the black flies were swarming around our heads while trying to get in for the kill! :o\ It was bad enough being right at home where we could go inside for a break away from them, but I kept thinking about how miserable (and not nice to be around) I'd be on a camping trip!

Mama Pea said...

Jenn - Yep, we were trying hard to make a fashion statement! It was our warmest day, too, and those protective bug shirts don't let the air in. Ugh.

Michelle - I read your comment about wool not usually burning, but now I can't find it anywhere!

You may have noticed by my replies to comments that everything seems to be posting out of order. I had to start approving comments before posting a short time ago because of getting so much spam and so far, I don't like the way things seem to be out of sequence here in the comments section.

But back to what you commented, you are the wool expert (I'm serious) and it may well be that Papa Pea's bathrobe had something other than 100% wool in it. And, of course, it didn't burst into flames (or we would have had to repair more than the robe!) but the damage was enough that the area was very thin and puckered so I had to patch it.
It didn't take him long to realize he had warmed up his posterior!

Michelle said...

Hee hee; I replied to your comment on Susan's blog about the robe; Blogger isn't hiding my comment here. ;-)

Michelle - Oh, fer Pete's sake! Now (that you reminded me) I realize that! I have an excuse for being such a dunderfutz. The black flies have sucked out too much of my blood and not enough is getting to my brain.

I was out in the garden before 7 a.m. this morning and got one whole bed planted, rhubarb harvested and two of the three beds of onions weeded before the little black biting buggars woke up and started using me for breakfast. After the day yesterday in the (hot) bug shirt, I'm not sure if I'll take a day off from outside tasks today or not. :o\

Great photo!

My daughter is 5’11” , son is 6’3”. I am,er was, 5’8”. Two of my grand girls are hovering around 6’ my daughters girls.
Sons two girls one is 5’3” or so and the younger one is heading to be taller but at 13 it is too soon to tell. Son’sweet wife is 5’2”.

Goatldi - It's funny how the height thing comes out in a family. Believe it or not, I was the tallest girl in my class through 7th grade. My mom and her six siblings were all on the tallish side so I was expected to be, too. But my dad was on the short side for a male and apparently after my early growth spurt, I took after him!

YOU - ARE - SOOOOOOOOO - BADDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!! lol You are!!!!!!!!

But getting out my magnifying glass, I can seeeee betttter. Heh-heh-heh..... You don't really think you can defeat an Old Lady like me, do you???? -grin-

Oh mercy, are the black flies that bad?????? A really big sigh...

I should not complain about a few bitty flying critters! Even though they do love me more, than anyone else. But they are not swarming black flies!

Gentle hugs...

wisps of words - Yeah, they ARE that bad! But, fortunately, they aren't that way all summer long. This first hatch is always awful though. After they get their first fill of blood (mostly min, I think), they seem to taper off (most years) and are bothersome mostly first thing in the morning and then right at dusk. Fairly easy to avoid them then. Of course, after the black flies come the mosquitoes. But, shhhhh, we won't talk about them. Yet.

Please don't worry about comments-being-out-of-order. Moderating comments, is important. Whether or not we like it. Which I don't.

But without it, the SPAM gets published. And it stays there, till we notice it. And by then, some Poor Reader could have clicked on it, and who knows what might have happened! If it is a phishing link!

Gentle hugs...

wisps of words - Yep, moderating comments is a little bit of a pain in the patoot, but so are (in so many ways) those stoopid SPAM comments. (Along with a lot of other things we have to put up with these days. Grumble-grump.)

LOL Great pic

GNATS are bad down here -- according to the weather geeks -- the flooding and moving water is good for gnats and ponding water is good for mosquito's ... argh ... all of God's tiniest creatures are VERY hungry this time of year!

Mama Pea said...

J.L. Murphey - Thanks, it's one of the better pictures of all of us! ;o}

Such a wonderful pic! Hugs...RO

Great picture for May Fly weather! You all look healthy and in great shape....from what I could see which wasn't much! LOL!

Rain said...

Ha ha ha ha...great photo, I can certainly join in...the black flies are insane over the last few days, I guess they finally figured out they were supposed to come out and annoy and feast on the humans now that summer is arriving!

Mama Pea said...

Marie - Gnats, black flies, mosquitoes . . . seems we're all dealing with those little irritations. It's curious the way one year one insect is worse than it usually is. I know we've never seen black flies here like this year! Just came in from the garden (wearing the whole bug shirt) and still managed to get two very swollen and itchy black fly bites. I'm just irresistible to them.

Mama Pea said...

Sam I Am - And totally fashionable for this awful, terrible black fly season! ;o)

Mama Pea said...

Rain - I thought maybe they'd be weakened by the long, cold spring we had. HA! What wishful thinking. Now I'm just hoping they've all hatched at once and will be done and gone in a week. (Yep, more wishful thinking.)

Yowza! Must be a lot of flies!!!

Susan said...

I may have to have one of those get-ups. I have to navigate with a drapey veil that tends to slide down over my eyes at inopportune moments. It's not half as posh and stylish as the Pea Family's.

Mama Pea said...

Nancy - Unfortunately there are! They form a swarm around your head. This year seems to be a bumper crop of them. (((Shudder))) When they bite they really hurt. It's like a sharp sting.

Mama Pea said...

Susan - The bug jackets are not cheap, but are necessary up here if one wants to be outside (or has to be outside) when the bugs are bad. Also, even though they have net covered vents, the material is such a close weave (so bugs can't bite through) that the jackets are hot if the weather is muggy or warm. I hate biting bugs. I just hate them. (But they looooovvveeee me. :o( )

Leigh said...

What a great family portrait! I've thought about wearing my bee bonnet in the mornings when I'm out in the garden. The noseeums are terrible before the sun hits it.

Mama Pea said...

Leigh - You have noseeums, too? Who'da thunk it? Welcome to that club. One of the reasons the bug jackets are so warm is that even the netting (for ventilation and in the face covering) is so small or tightly woven so that it keeps out noseeums, too. Which you know are very, very small. I'm still scratching from the bites I got two and three days ago!
