In A Pickle

No, nothing bad.  More like "In The Pickles!"


I spent the day canning pickles.  Did 14 quarts of dills and 8 pints of bread and butter pickles.  I have to check the totals of what I've done before, but I may be done with pickles for this year.

It was a perfect day for it as we had a much needed steady rain for most of the day, cool temps and I didn't even get over-heated.  The only downside was that dinner was just peanut butter and jelly sandwiches . . . and even that was delayed while I got my last batch in the canner.

Checking out blogs tonight I see I haven't been the only one doing a bunch of canning lately.  Click on over to Laurie's blog, 111 LaLa Lane.  That gal just processed FIFTY pounds ot tomatoes.  Kinda makes my pickling efforts pale in comparison!

Glad to hear you had cool temps to do your canning in!
That's a LOT of pickles. I think we use 2 jars a year...so I luck out not having to do them....though I also miss out on having those great looking jars of home canned goodies lining the (scallopy!!!) shelves.
But heck, I've got a zillion (or close to it) bags of frozen beans I can ogle. Not the same, is it? Ah well. I don't have scallopy (!!!!) shelves either.

Thanks for the shout out Mama Pea! I'm afraid my efforts pale in comparison to your gardening, though. Heck yeah, canning 50lbs of tomatoes was a job, but the rewards will be great......just as all those pickles you put up. I'm going to have to try my hand at pickles. I'm partial to dill. I would love it, if you shared your recipe.

I am getting ready to can some squash, canning is not very popular in the UK although the interst is growing as more people start growing food, I had my canner shipped from the USA, I am waiting for a delivery of jars :-)

I wish we had some cool temps. Today it was 37C (98.6F) and we are getting smoke up from fires in Washington although we have enough of our own to deal with. I just wish this summer was over already.
Your pickles look delish. I'm not canning anything this summer.

Laurie - My dill pickle recipe is super-simple, but a goodie. Methinks I've shared it before on this blog . . . but, of course, can't find it now. So next post, I'll put it up 'specially for you, m'dear.

Dawn - Boy, a person sure can learn something everyday! I had no idea canning was not done regularly in the UK. And you can't even buy jars?! Is lacto-fermenting more popular?

Sparkless - As always, the fires are a scary, scary thing. We were getting close to high fire danger but the past two days of rain have been a blessing for us. You have, indeed, had a very hot, unusual summer this year. I can see why you're wishing for it to be over. And quick!

Mama Pea,

I'm so happy to hear you were able to get your cukes canned into pickles. As for me, I haven't been able to get the canning done due to the situation and travels back and forth to TX. Surprising enough, my garden is actually producing all kinds of veggies right now. I've been able to harvest the veggies and eat them for meals when in town. But haven't had the opportunity to can :-(

I will be interested to see your dill pickle recipe as well - mine all turn out all limp. Blech. I am eyeing the rest of my cucumber crop to see if there is enough for another batch of B&Bs.

Sandy - You need make no excuses for not being able to fit canning into your not normal schedule lately. Good to hear that your garden is doing great even though you've not been able to give it the attention you might want. Needless to say, we have to roll with the punches sometimes and be grateful for what we can do without making ourselves crazy. Take care of yourself, girlie.
