I Know It's Spring Somewhere

A quick post to let you all know we're still alive and kickin'.  Still can't get outside to do much except daily chores as we have about three feet of snow cover in any place that hasn't been plowed.  Oh, yeah, and the piles of snow from plowing that are about six feet tall tend to hem us in.

After ending last week with temps quietly creeping up towards 32°, we had a mild (relatively speaking, I suppose, compared to most of the rest of you) weekend and a gorgeous day on Monday that hit 50° (!!) and felt wonderful.  Or maybe it was Sunday.  It was such a shock that I can't rightly remember.

Papa Pea immediately hooked up the outside hose and got a couple of vehicles washed.

But then Tuesday, we started the nosedive toward frigidity again.  This morning we had 2°.  Now a little after noon, we've hit 14°.  The sun is shining brightly and on days like this, even some snow melts through evaporation.

Spring never comes quickly to the north woods so we've learned to be patient and enjoy the couple of "teaser" days Mother Natures chooses to give us.  We still have the rest of March and the whole month of April in which we could get a lot of snow.

All of this is okay with us as we are still finding plenty of things that could/should be done inside and we're even doing some that we want to do.

I'm ready to put the binding around the edge of my spring shower curtain.  I hope to get started on that yet today.

In sorting through some boxes, I found a stash of rug yarn and have a good start on this crocheted throw rug.  Wish there had been a variety of colors to choose from to make it more colorful but there were just these two colors to work with.  It will be fine for a rug in front of the washing machine in the garage.  (Believe me, anything will help that area.  It's on my list to attack.  Unfortunately, it's not very near the top of the list.)

I'm off to check the barley casserole in the oven.  It's a favorite one I usually serve as a side dish but I had some cooked venison in the freezer (which tastes just like roast beef to me) so I put that in the casserole to make it a one-dish meal.

Hope all of you who are further into spring weather than we are have been getting outside and enjoying the fresh air.  Our air may be fresh, but drat and dang, it's still so cold!

It's supposed to drop form 60* today to in the 20's with high wind by the evening. Hello spring? I use a lot of venison also. No one knows the difference.

No spring here either. Low tonight of MINUS 7. Yea. Happy Spring!
On a bright note, the sun is shining and it looks like the snow has receded a bit--the pump handle on the yard hydrant is clearly visible now----HOORAY!

I've heard about you Northerners hurrying to wash your cars when the temp finally gets above freezing but where are the shorts and the flip-flops?! ;)

We have good weather and don't get our cars washed! Guess you have to do it when you can because once that snow melts, you will be very busy in the garden.

Spring will come in her own good time. The secret is to enjoy the weather whatever it may be. Love your rug!

P.S. Thanks for the idea about the barley casserole! I am just prepping to make one for dinner here tonight - perfect to use up some things in the fridge, too.

Lisa - I don't care much for the kind of spring weather that goes to such extremes. I think that messes with our body's metabolism!

Sue - Yep, we have a forecast of "chance of snow" right through Saturday. As much as I love winter, I'm starting to get nervous about how long into spring we'll have snow cover!

Candy C. - Where are the shorts and flip-flops? Still packed away. Waaaay far away!

2 Tramps - Hubby was going nuts thinking about all the salt (from the roads) on the vehicles so that's why he jumped on the opportunity recently. 'Course, one good snowfall and the roads will be salted, sanded and slushy again . . . so the vehicles will be, too!

Our barley casserole was good. How was yours? :o}

Sparkless - Thanks! For the good advice and compliment!

Glad to hear you are doing well with that ridiculous weather! Love the rug!

Our weather went from one extreme to the other yesterday. The rug looks great.

Weekend-Windup - Will do! We have a temp of 30° now today at noon with a 50% chance of snow. It's very heavy, gray, and damp. I guess it's just spring when the temp bounces up and down like this.

Thanks for the nice words regarding the rug.

Stephanie Bateman - Thanks, Stephanie!

Kristina - You're having even wilder fluctuations in the weather than we are in northern MN!

The rug with the heavy rug yarn goes really fast. 'Course, I have to actually sit down and DO it to make it go really fast! (Funny how that works, huh?)

Well, it ain't spring here, I can tell you. Came out to a nice, thick coating of ice on my car, snow flying, wind blowing, and temps in the single digits. Geez. I hope you start to lean toward spring from this point on.

Jealous of your rug! I have piles of sheets waiting for me to cut up to make me a rug. I can't seem to find the time, maybe I should get off the computer LOL!!!! My grandpa from MN said his brother told him they had two and half feet of snow. We were just talking about it outside today. I can't even imagine what the plows push up. Mountains I'm sure.....Crazy!!!!

Susan - Ice. Ice is not nice. I guess that's one thing we should be thankful for this winter. We've not had much ice to deal with at all. Or maybe there is ice under the 17' of snow. How would we know??

Kelly - I keep trying to figure out how I can/could get more time for the things I like to do with my hands . . . you know, like knitting, making rugs, quilting, etc. But lets' face it, with the type of life we've all chosen to live, there are NEVER enough hours in a day!

In town the piles of snow have been so high all winter that you (literally) have to pull halfway out into the street to see if any cars are coming. Not safe! When the guys aren't plowing the roads, they are working to bucket the piles of snow into dump trucks and haul it away . . . which does help. Until we get the next big bunch of snow! Whadda winter!

I love your rug! I can also relate to the mountains of snow. I'm in central IL. It's actually thawing a bit but I'm afraid if the thaw continues we'll have lakes everywhere from the mountains of snow!

Mama Pea said...

Sarah - I know you folks have gotten way more snow this winter than usual, too. Hubby and I were both raised in northern IL and moved from there because winters were nothing but a bit of snow, washed away by rain which turned into ice. NOW you get the big snows that we love of a winter. Just ain't fair!

You poor things! All that cold, brrrr. And snow. I'd love to send you some of our weather. But then, it will be way too hot here before long.

I love your rug out of the colors you've got!

Hard to believe the differences in our climate. 2 days ago we were at 78 degrees, then a 'cool' 50s yesterday. My late planted cool weather garden is beginning to sprout and we tilled the in-ground beds last weekend. It's kind of 'stunning' to see your photos and read what you are experiencing. Your ground will definitely not need any hydration for a while after all that snow melts!!! Stay warm!

your so lucky to have some venison around,Jerry doesn't hunt anymore ,nether do my boys ,but the rest of the family ,if there was a way to send you a photo of there "gang kill
at least 15 deer and all processed in my brother Bob's, under the house cool room, cut ,processed ,sausage made . Every guy was busy .But sadly to say ,even tho I asked ,my brother would not share :( I just don't know anymore about my brothers .If I had what they have ,I most certainly would share , just wait til they meet up with mom,the belt is gonna swing (but I don't suppose there are any belts in heaven )

Leigh - Yep, no matter where we live, it's not perfect, is it? Good thing we all don't want the same thing though! We've got a break today with the temps in the mid-30s. If it weren't so darn damp, it would feel good!

Mama Pea said...

Lisa - When I think about the different climates we all live in, I imagine how completely "messed up" we all would be if we were transplanted into each others' seasonal routine! What a crazy scramble of our brains that would make!

judy - It is a real shame when families can't get along. And yet it's also very common that it happens. :o(
