Baby, It's Cold . . . Inside

These mornings when we force ourselves to leave the warm, cozy cocoon of our bed, we're finding the temperature of the house is a mite on the chilly side. Usually in the low 60s which means it doesn't take us long to get dressed swathing ourselves in several layers of warm clothing.

I couldn't resist taking this picture of hubby at the breakfast table one morning this week. In defense of his outfit, he had just come down from his office which is the coldest room in the house.

The little bit uncomfortable hour or two in the morning before we get things warmed up is nobody's fault but our own. We haven't transitioned into full winter heating mode yet. We're still burning soft wood and choosing not to bank the wood stove to hold a fire overnight. We both prefer sleeping in a cooler temp, but maybe not so much functioning in that same cooler temp first thing in the morning!

Today was a perfect day to be at home. We had a little over 1/2" of new snow over night but the temperature was already 33 degrees when we got up. Then it went up to 34 degrees and starting raining. Ugh. Lots of warnings that the roads were slippery. Hubby had planned on working on the siding on the garage again today but with the rain and very stiff wind that came up, he quickly decided he could find something else profitable to do . . . inside.

We're having a very quiet Friday night with Christmas carols on the stereo (it just seems right), the wood stove crackling and Zoey the Wonder Dog snoring on her bed. I had a beer with our dinner pizza tonight and it just about put me under the teeble . . . tubble . . . I mean table. Hic. Gotta go to bed now.

Oh that photo is a gem! I love it LOL! I remember when I was little my mom used to take our stacks of clothes early in the morning and warm them before waking us up for school - I need to remember to thank her for that one of these days!

I figured Zoey for a "your bed is her bed" kind of gal!

I think you're smart to save that good hard stuff for when winter gets underway when you'll need it, but that's probably not far away now... just need to get rid of that pesky rain, too dangerous at those temps.

Erin - What a thoughtful mommy you had/have! Wish somebody would do that for me these mornings.

We've never allowed any of our dogs on furniture or our bed. So poor little Zoey has to sleep on one of the THREE beds she has in the house.

November can be a baaad weather months up here. It's when we get icy roads and to my mind that's just not a good thing.

Have a good weekend and I'll look forward to those pictures your next post.

Oh. My. Gawd.

Erin, "your bed is her bed"???? Hohhhhhh BOY, you don't know Mama Pea very well, do you?! She hardly wants dogs in her HOUSE . . . let alone in their (gasp!) BED?!!! Wash your mouth out with SOAP!

(But she DOES make Zoey QUILTED - yes, QUILTED - dog blankets!)

;)

I can definitely relate! As well, I can't seem to get in the habit of remembering to add wood during the day, so about 2 or 3:00, it's getting chilly and I have to re-start the fire. LOTS of kindling being used!

For some reason I do not understand, my father lived in an unheated cottage for 10 years from his teens to twenties. He only had a fireplace and he said his shoes often would freeze to the floor. So he put them in the bed to keep them warm. Keep in mind the rest of his family lived in a toasty warm house 500 yards away, and couldn't believe he would sleep in that cottage. And I wonder where I get my hard head.

Chicken Mama - So why is it that we've always had a dog? Just doesn't seem right.

The true reason I don't like dogs in the house is that I'm a very lazy housekeeper. And they bring in so much dirt and shed hair all over the place. And that means I have to clean even more than I do which isn't enough. And I've got better things to do. Like be lazy. Simple.

Patty - My hubby is going to suspect we're related. I get bustling around in the house doing things which makes me warm and first thing you know 'round about 4 p.m. . . . hey, it's kinda chilly in here. And I have to restart the fire. Lots of kindling used here, too. :o)

Jane - Your father was obviously a strong individual who wanted to do what he wanted to do. Remind you of anyone?

Love the picture! We've done the same thing here, too, especially if we know it's going to be getting warmer soon, or if we are going to be working and getting warm anyway. We heat our house 100% with our wood stove, and during some nights it gets mighty chilly unless somebody stokes up the fire really good. Love the winter!!

Lori - It's somehow comforting to know that other people sometimes wear more clothes inside than outside! ;o)
