Ya Know What?

Sometimes it doesn't pay to buy "old" canning jars . . .

. . . no matter how good a deal they are.

Ugh! I hate when that happens! Thankfully it isn't too often. Sorry for your woes :(

That is not very pretty! Sorry. Wish there was a way to tell it was weak before you canned something.

Apple Pie Gal - This is my second one this year . . . but I bet I've done close to a hundred jars so that's not bad, eh?

Judy - I know! My husband just asked me, "But WHY does that happen?" I always inspect the jars but you sure can't tell when one is going to go.

Erin - Guess it goes to prove you shouldn't count your canned food before it's canned! I was feeling good about getting 8 more jars of pickled beets today . . . but it turned out to be 7!

I'm so sorry. This is one of my least favorite canning incidents- especially when it occurs inside the canner- yuck!

ThyHand - I was really lucky (?) with this one. All the pickling brine leaked out, of course, but only one slice of beet came out of the jar even when I picked it up out of the canner!

Question: Does that happen before they're put in the pantry? That is not a surprise I'd like to find after I'd put everything away.

Conny - I've never heard of a jar breaking after being put in the pantry/storage. It's always happened to me in the canner usually right when I put the jar in the boiling water. (Heck, I'd crack, too, if somebody submerged me in boiling water. Hahahohoheehee!) I have heard of a jar being stored with a lid that wasn't really sealed and later being found with a rotten, ooey-gooey mess oozing all over everything. (Sorry for the visual but I know it has happened.)
