Do You Think It's Strange To Be So Giddy Over A Head of Cauliflower?

Yeah, most likely.  Unless you're a gardener who has never been able to grow a head of cauliflower that even vaguely resembles a head of cauliflower.  Yup, that's me!

I feel as though I've won the jackpot this year.  This is the third head that I've harvested, and it's a beauty, no?

I'm sure my new-found ability to successfully grow this vegetable was a fluke resulting from 1) the time I set my cauliflower seedlings out, and 2) exactly the right kind of weather (very cool and wet) we had for the entire beginning of our summer.  (Cauliflower doesn't like to grow in warm weather.)

Needless to say, I am now encouraged and will be trying it again next year.  (Sure hope my balloon doesn't get popped!)

And probably the best part of this all is, as with all the other vegetables you raise yourself, my homegrown cauliflower tastes so much better than any one I've ever purchased.  All three heads harvested so far have been mild, creamy and buttery . . . which all totally reinforces the reason to garden.

I don't think it's strange but I am a bit jealous. It's waaay too hot here to grow it, though I have tried (& failed). How do you cook it? We have fallen in love with it smashed with a bit of butter & sour cream.

I like DFW, am a bit envious! Congrats on the head! I have yet to get one to grow for me! I would get first prize for minis..last year they grew to be about 3" wide! Embarrassing!

Congrats. Cauliflower LOVES cool PERFECT weather, something that takes a miracle to eke out anymore.
Oh, I imagine it slathered in butter with just a wee bit of salt and pepper. YUM!!!!

Why, it's almost too beautiful to eat. Almost. What a gorgeous head o' cauliflower! Whatever you're doing - keep it up! (Will there be cauliflower in October....?)

That is one beautiful cauliflower. Even the ones I bought at the market did not look as good as yours does. Congrats!

DFW - I cut it into flowerettes, put in pot with water about halfway up, bring to quick boil, turn off heat and let sit with cover on until everything else for the meal is ready to go on the plates. Drain, add butter and let individuals salt and pepper. Mmmmmmm! Yours with the sour cream sounds really good.

M.E.Masterson - In the past mine have formed very deformed heads . . . not tight but separated and ugly colored!

I'd pee myself if I could grow a cauliflower! Congrats on yours :)

Your cauliflower is beautiful. The one time I grew some it turned yellow and was full of worms. I ate it anyways and it was yummy but a major pain in the hind end!

Tami - There aren't a lot of us who are so fond of cauliflower. Wonder why? Why has it not become a "popular" vegetable?

Sue - So I should start hoping for a miracle for this to happen to me a second time? Wouldn't ya know!

Nancy - Thanks! I'm still not sure how it's happening!

Susan - Cauliflower in October? Ha! Snow, maybe. ;o}

Kristina - I blanched this one and it is now in the freezer! Hope to get a couple more, but . . . who knows? It's getting kinda warm now.

Mama Pea said...

Carolyn - Well, we wouldn't want THAT to happen, now would we??

Kelly - It's so much like broccoli I can't figure out why the darn stuff is so difficult to grow! I couldn't have tolerated yours that was full of creepy crawlies!
