Snow Report

Nope, not a report of any new snow (well, not more than an inch or so), but rather of the snow we have on the ground.

This morning we bundled up like Antarctic explorers and hiked out our driveway to get the mail.

This shot is of our mail box and Papa Pea returning from it coming toward our driveway.  An impressive bunch of snow by the mailboxes, don't ya think?

Back at the house, we did some moving of wood that had fallen out of the wood shed.  It was half a tier at the front that for some reason decided to leave the comfy confines of the shed and hurl itself out into the snow.

Then we filled the wood box on our enclosed porch.  Yep, a mite on the excessive side, but it may save us from having to haul any wood tomorrow.

Next my energetic husband wanted to go for a snowshoe hike back up on the ridge behind us.  I used my quick wit (cough, cough) to come up with a good excuse as to why I couldn't go.

~  The skin on my face was approaching the frost bitten stage.  (No joke.)

~  I needed to finish hemming a pair of slacks I just got.

~  Dinner would be better if I started it now and let it simmer all afternoon.

~  The toilet needed cleaning.

~  I had a real desire to spend a couple of hours paying bills.

He got the drift right quick (!) and headed out by himself.

When he returned, I was oh-so-glad I hadn't gone.  Because our temperatures have been so low, the bulk of the snow we've gotten is very soft and has no crust on top.  He said even with the snowshoes, he sank down about 12" with each step.  Do you know how much effort is required to tromp along under those conditions?  I do.  I was very glad I hadn't gone on that little outing!

On Sunday, it's supposed to be 74 degrees here. I don't think there will be any snow in sight! (NOT a good thing, in my opinion.)

Still now, even after knowing a few blogging buddies up in the Arctic Circle, I think that snowshoes are just a "cartoon" thing. Like, they really aren't "real", but some made up contraption to make us southerners think you guys are wacked. Which, well, you are. But that's besides the point.

Excuses, Excuses, if you run out let me know I could probably think up a few you didn't use. LOL. Stay warm, stay dry.

JJ - 74°! That is just so wrong three days before Christmas! I'd boycott that if I were you.

Carolyn - You hit a point where the snow is so deep that it's nearly impossible to walk in it without the snowshoes. Our cold weather, along with lots of light, fluffy snow, is an unusual condition. Normally, even on an unpacked trail you wouldn't sink in more than a few inches with the snowshoes on.

Tombstone Livestock - Feel free to send me that list of excuses so I can have them at hand when I need them, please.

My husband and I have such different thermostats. Even when the temp is in the deep freeze, once he gets moving (like hiking on snowshoes) he starts peeling off layers while I just get colder and colder and colder until I'm an icicle. Then he just knocks me over and pulls me home behind him as if I were a sled.

Quick thinking on your part. I feel the same way about stomping thru snow.

Did I hear that right? Yer hubby wanted to take ah tramp up to the ridge? I wouldn't have gone either. LOL!! Sounds like your wood is jump'in to git lit eh? Or rollin out?

Michelle - Just finished talking with a friend who stopped by and she commented that she went for a snowshoe with her dog yesterday afternoon and sunk in up to her KNEES! We need some snow with moisture in it to "soak" down this light, fluffy stuff!

Nancy - Did you hear what you said? He wanted to "take a tramp up to the ridge?" Hahahaheehoho. Funny, funny!

I can't figure out why that wood pile just tipped over and out. Maybe ambitious squirrels building condos in the stacks?

As a rural mail carrier myself all I can think of is that poor mailman riding though all that snow with the window down in the car and his arm hanging out. Brrrrr!

Dawn - I think the secret for the rural mail carriers up here is that they have REALLY good heaters in their vehicles! Although they are definitely more intrepid drivers than I am what with all the county's slippy-slidey roads they have to navigate!
