My White, White World

Are you feeling glum that your temperatures refuse to soar to the heights you're ready and wishing for? Getting depressed that you're still experiencing a little frost on clear nights? This post is designed to make you feel lots better about the fact that although spring may be only lurking on your horizon, it will truly be making an appearance near you soon.

The above is my pumpkin patch all eager and ready for lush, green, trailing vines of squash and pumpkins. But not quite yet.

This is the field garden that's all set to be planted out with all those crops that take up lots space such as potatoes, beans, peas, pickling cucumbers, broccoli, cabbage, sunflowers, tomatoes. But not quite yet.

Here we have my twenty-six 4'x 8' raised beds bursting with carefully composted soil which has been warmed by the sun, turned industriously by six trillion fat earthworms, and full of nutrients just waiting to be sucked up by the roots of sprouted seeds. But not quite yet.

One look out any of my windows and you can see that spring is not gonna be happening any time soon in my neck o' the woods. After seeing my white, white world do you feel better about your current temperatures now?

I wish my pictures of mud would show up as well as your pictures of snow. Stay warm and safe!

I now have 'dirty' snow and mud. I don't like mud season ... so messy! I like your new and clean snow - and, yes, it will be a while before spring comes to you.
Stay warm!

Well no I don't feel better cause I'm in the same boat as you are with the white stuff. Just found out we broke some cold records this past February. What an epic winter this is! We'll tell tales of how cold it was and how much snow we had.

We still could be looking out of the same window. However, we have two days of relatively balmy weather predicted that include heavy rain. One day I will learn that I may regret what I wish for. But I am still clinging to my 'no snow' mantra. Do you have lots to do inside?

I was wondering what the arctic circle looked like this time of year. Now I know.

Oh my!! I was kind of groaning because we had rain last night and it's chilly today but I am so THANKFUL I don't have your snow!

Ruth - By the time we get to the mud phase, you will be all done with it!

Yvette - Even though we still have snow, I think our frigid, really cold weather is over. (Knock on wood!)

Sparkless - Well, no way we have to make time to get out and start working in the garden/yard, is there?

Susan - Rain in the spring on top of a lot of snow does truly make a yucky mess, but at least you don't have to shovel it. (Small favors, huh?) I have PLENTY to do inside yet. Absolutely no problem there.

Jane - That's us. The Arctic Circle with trees.

Alla - Even though the temp never reached 32 above today, we still had a lot of dripping. I don't understand that. Ooops, I just looked outside and it's starting to snow!

Nice try Mama Pea. But it didn't work. We look just like you. We are due for more snow on Monday and Tuesday down here in central MN. You know it's bad when 20 degrees sounds like a heat wave eh?

I just keep telling myself "soon, soon we'll see something green" LOL

Freedom - I know! You've had as much snow this year as we have up "nort!" I feel so sorry for our geese because they are such grass eaters. Talk about being hungry for a certain food! They must be about bonkers. ;o)

Well i'm happy enough with our weather and temps,I know it won't be long til spring here. You sure do grow a lot of veggys. I envy those raised beds and those worms working the soil.Blessings jane

Those pictures with their accompanying test are such a poignant reminder of the cycles of life.

Oops...meant "accompanying text" (not "test").

Jane2 - I truly do love my raised beds. They're ready for planting each year much earlier than the field garden.

Claire - It sure is a different world out there compared to what it will be like in 4-5 months! (Bugs aren't bad now though.)

I know exactly how you feel!!! Last weekend, after nearly 3 weeks of no storms, we got 2 ft in 3 days:( So very ready for spring!!! LOL.

My garden looked like that when we left. So sad, but we have to console ourselves with the fact that all that snow is actually GOOD for the soil. And when it goes, it goes fast....though I don't have to contend with mud. Sand has SOME advantages (easy weeding being the other!)
Sending you warm thoughts!

Stephanie - Throws ya right back into mid-winter, doesn't it? ;o)

Sue - Snow: Poor man's fertilizer. In years when we get very little snow, come spring time I always feel like the soil is lacking something. (Ha! Moisture, for one!)

It's supposed to be 60 here today, but I'm not ready! I have so much indoor stuff I still want to get done!

Mama Pea said...

Erin - Well, m'dear, you can't be outside and inside at the same time. And it sounds as if you have a very LARGE project going on inside so ignore everything outside and keep on truckin' on your latest inside. It's very, very early and the outside stuff will be there next week, I'm sure.

Hey Mama Pea! :) I feel great seeing that because I have it too!

Rain - Let's enjoy the snow that we have 'cause it IS going to start melting pretty soon now. Then we'll have to clean up all the debris that always seems to appear outside magically over the winter!

Wow - just wow! It's been gray and drippy and damp in southern Ohio but I'm happy we haven't had any snow. I'm trying to learn to drive a stick shift and it's hard enough on a relatively flat and dry road!!!

Mama Pea said...

Jen - Did you buy a stick shift or is this just a loaner for the time being? There are a lot of people out there who don't even know HOW to drive a stick!

Ahhhhh, I was feeling really bad for you. Until I got to the part where you said you have TWENTY SIX 4x8 beds!! That much snow just means you get to sit by the fire with your tea or cocoa, reading, knitting, or quilting a little longer than the rest of us. Enjoy!

Lori - I'm laughing at your comment. I really do have a whole bunch of things I want to get done yet before going outside for the spring/summer/fall season. The size of our gardens keeps me very, very busy!
