What Day Is This?

I think I need a vacation. Or at least a time out. (Will somebody please make me take a time out?) The days are all blurring together . . . today felt like a Saturday. That's how out of sync I am. I'm getting more than a little perturbed that summertime is so busy that I'm not finding time to really enjoy it.

More strawberries harvested today. Twenty-one pounds plus. I sold them to two different places in town and had a big bowl of uglies leftover for our own fresh eating. (Too many bowls of sliced strawberries in cream are causing my pants to shrink.)

Another day with temperatures in the 90s in the garden. I soaked through two tank tops and still haven't taken off my ball cap because I don't want to see what my hair looks like.

We had new friends over for a casual dinner tonight. I wanted to eat out on the deck because it was so stuffy in the house. Luck was with us and we managed to eat and sit to visit for about an hour afterwards before the no-see-ums got bad enough to drive us in.

Now to find enough oompf to do up dishes, take a shower and plop into bed.

Maybe tomorrow I can manage to get some pictures of the raised beds to show you. Everything is growing like crazy!

Yart - You'd be surprised how many people have offered to come eat . . . I mean pick in the strawberry patch!

Apple Pie Gal - Hey! What's so funny? I swear they are shrinking . . . that can be the only reasonable explanation. Right?

How on earth could your pants be shrinking as hard as you have been working???

Wow, you are doing better than me - when it's 90 or over I can't even bring myself to go out there! Today is interesting, woke up to high dewpoints and hazy & hot, but yet the high is supposed to be only 87 later today, so I will have to sit the early morning out for a change and wait for afternoon when it is "supposed" to be a little cooler!

It sounds like you ARE enjoying summer: strawberries and cream, dinner outside with friends, and busting your butt in the garden. That's the sum total of summer, period.

Winter is for resting.

Nineties here, too-- the heat index puts us right around 100 degrees when our high humidity is factored in.

Yesterday I did a late planting of pole beans and tried to get some more squash in to make up for all the seeds the chickens gobbled out of the soil. (Dang birds managed to scratch the row-cover right off, even though I had it weighted along the edges with heavy rocks!) I got up early but the heat sent me inside, soaking and gasping, by 9:00 AM.

Found myself looking forward to November...

Jen - It's one of those great mysteries of life.

Erin - I guess our part of the country is experiencing our little bit of the crazy, unusual weather happening elsewhere. Most of the time in the summer, we get maybe 3 or 4 of these really hot, humid days (those are the 3 or 4 days we call "summer") but this year it's turning into a heckuva lot more. (And me with no full-sized tomatoes in the garden this year. Geesh.)

JJ - Ya got me there, lady. I just wish the pace was a little more leisurely. (When does winter start?)

MaineCelt - Methinks you should have weighted down that row-cover with STEW POTS!

Just how large is your strawberry patch??? That crop has got to be a record. It is hard to keep momentum going in this weather. I feel soggy all the time. I can't wait to see your garden - I bet it's amazing by now.

p.s. Mama Pea -- go to your room! ;o)

Susan - Our patch is approximately 16' x 16' and has 150 plants in it. This is the best harvest we've EVER had from our strawberries. Everything must have worked out just right.

Your P.S. made me laugh out loud. (I'd gladly go to my room . . . my quilting room!)
