Didn't It Rain, Little Children, Didn't It Rain!

Listening to the weather report as I was fixing dinner last night, I learned that our county and one other were the only ones in Minnesota that weren't under a tornado watch.

Along about 8 o'clock, it became so dark outside that it felt as if someone had turned out the lights. Then the rain began. I don't know when I've heard or seen it rain so hard for such a period of time. A friend said this morning that the electricity was out for a while, but we were unaware of it as we were on solar power.

This is a white pot I have sitting at the end of a potato row in the garden. Can you see how much dirt was splattered up on it from the rain hitting the soil?

I half expected to see our planting of oats and barley in the pumpkin patch flattened this morning, but as you can see, it's still standing tall. (I asked Zoey the Wonder Dog to smile for the picture, but you can tell it's a forced smile; she doesn't like having her picture taken.)

As I toured the garden checking for damage, I couldn't resist taking a picture of this lettuce. Don'tcha think it's just about as purdy as any flower?

The other thing I discovered was that my little pickling cucumber sprouts are poking up through the soil. We shall be making pickles in August, we shall!

I thought about you and your daughter when I heard about the twisters on the news this morning. Glad to hear that you were not in it's path. Peace.

Hi, Judy - Thanks for the kind thoughts. No, even though the storm last night was a real thunder-boomer with lightning and all, we had nothing to complain about considering the damage that occurred south and west of us. (Pulling weeds out of the garden today was a snap . . . talk about soft, wet ground!)

Our local weatherman let us know about the damage up there, as his old school was flattened by a tornado last night (he's a MN native!). I was on the phone with my mom last night when I heard the tornado sirens going off in the background, it was eerie, it has been so long since I have heard them! I kept on talking and she was like, can I call you back? We're going down to the basement LOL! Guess I forgot protocol, we have hurricanes here that give us days of prep time, that is if we are paying attention! Lovely lettuces, mine are kaput from the heat!

Hey, Erin - I don't know if there has ever been a bona fide tornado up here as far north as we are but we've had some terrific straight-line winds that have wreaked havoc.

I don't miss the tornadoes one bit. When we lived in Illinois one missed us by less than 1/4 of a mile and totally wiped the landscape clean including barns, houses, herds of cows, horses, everything. I was very glad to leave all that behind when we moved here!

That is wild! And yes, the lettuce does need a pretty vase.

Hi, Rainsong - I know you said the lettuce should be in a vase kinda tongue-in-cheek, but hey! Why not?! We float roses in a dish of water . . . why not a head of lettuce that is just as striking??

Thanks so much for commenting!
