Our dear daughter made such a nice Thanksgiving Day for me by preparing much of the meal. It was so good to eat cooking other than my own. I never even asked just how she prepared each delicious dish, I just ate it with gusto and total enjoyment.
She even provided adult beverages for each of us. I got my favorite Bailey's Irish Cream on which I could easily get hooked if I let myself. We never touched the pumpkin pie I had made, but plan to do so tonight when she joins us for leftovers.
Still and all, the day after a major holiday always is kind of a let-down, isn't it? A little bit emotionally, sometimes physically, too
It's the physical tiredness that's affecting our small household today. Even though we had a low-key, relaxing, very enjoyable Thanksgiving Day yesterday, neither Papa Pea nor I could fall asleep last night.
We both tossed and turned, got up, came back to bed, got up again and, I think, finally laid down for the last time somewhere after 1:30 a.m. Then I woke at 4:25 and had a hard time falling back asleep. Was it the full moon? It wasn't from over-eating . . . or drinking, I know that.
The night before, for me anyway, wasn't much better. I woke after midnight (you know, when you feel like there is a switch that makes you go from sleeping to wide awake in an instant) and decided to go out to the couch to read because I didn't want to wake my soundly sleeping husband.
I was there reading for an hour or so when I was startled by a loud bang and crash. I couldn't tell exactly from where in the house it came, but it sure was enough to get my heart pumping. After a few minutes lying there with all senses on red-alert (and deciding that no, I wasn't going to go investigating at that hour, by myself, in the dark house), I got up and scurried back to the bedroom where I woke Papa Pea. I told him what had happened and he said he had heard the noise, too. Then he mumbled there must be some simple, logical explanation which we would discover in the morning. At least I was able to get back to sleep by snuggling close to him and assuring myself he was right.
What was the thing that went bump in the night?
A window in hubby's upstairs office shattered. You can see (I think) the shards still clinging to the frame in the above picture. Most all of the glass in the lower portion of the frame landed on the floor. This is the third of these particular windows we put in the house when we remodeled/built some twenty years ago that has shattered. Inferior glass? The previous two broke while bright sunlight was on them, but this one happened in the dark of the middle of the night. Did the full moon have anything to do with our nocturnal wakefulness and the window breaking? Who knows.
I do know that if I don't manage to get a good night's sleep tonight, I'm going to turn into a creaky, cranky, grumpy-dump old hag by tomorrow. And that's fair warning to all in the near vicinity!
Wow, what an unpleasant surprise – and to have it happen to THREE windows of a particular kind would have me calling the manufacturer AND distributor to warn, complain, and demand replacements!
ReplyDeleteUgh; sleeplessness. I've been waking up with a painful neck/shoulder, and am often aware of discomfort throughout the night, but hate to have a nightcap of Aleve every night. I hear you on "creaky, cranky, grumpy-dump"!
Michelle - The window company replaced the first window at no charge, but after that said they couldn't cover a replacement. If I remember correctly, it was a case where they were bought out by a bigger company and then, of course, we had no recourse as far as getting a replacement.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think your neck/shoulder pain is being caused by? An injury or stress, pressure and tension showing itself when you try to sleep? Sleep is so very important to our health that I know I certainly get stressed out by the fact that I can't sleep!
Then I'd start leaving bad reviews; it might get the new company's attention. It is certainly a matter of safety; can you imagine if a child was playing near a window that shattered like that?!?
ReplyDeleteI have no idea. I've wondered if it is my pillow, but I've been loving it for a year. No new activities, so not injury or overuse. Stress? Maybe....
I slept well last night, but woke up too early. I actually just woke up from a 2 hour nap. I started yawning big time about 1:30 pm and was really drowsy! Off to bed for me. Scary about your window, I hate noises in the night, especially since hubby sleeps thru all of them!

Nancy, I used to see a chiropractor I really liked, but he retired and I haven't found another I trust. Same with a physical therapist who used an osteopathic model. I'm not comfortable with acupuncture....
ReplyDeleteOh I do not like nights like those! I get them frequently and although when going to bed I feel like I could sleep for England but usually after midnight my body is like- nope! no more sleeping, time to get up! And then I fall back asleep around 430 and my alarm goes off at 455. Yep. I am mostly a cranky grumpy-dump.
ReplyDeleteThat is a real shame about those windows. Windows are not cheap either. We just replaced most of the ones in our new house. Ouch. But I know exactly how that heart racing, high alert feeling is. Not a nice feeling.
I hope tonight is a much, much better sleep for both you and Papa Pea. Sending you chamomile thoughts.

Oh heavens, Mama Pea... how I abhor those shift sleeping nights! I sure hope you get a good night soon. Those things that go bump in the night, I always blame on the cat, then explore it in the light of day...lol. The double pane windows on the farm have all cracked, and the manufacture has gone out of business. We are planning on total replacement this summer, with a long term window company. It will cost more, but the reputation is what we are paying for. Isn't the cold coming into your house?

We had late brunch. I didn't even eat dinner. I was still so full. No trouble sleeping here. In fact, I overslept. That had to be scary so late at night and hearing that noise. I wonder if a bird hit it? If, not that Company owes you a free window replacement at the very least. Hope you sleep better this week.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if it's going around? Full moon? I haven't slept past 2A for a week, so far. And I don't see an end in sight. How nice to have someone cook for YOU! I think that makes everything taste extra special. My goodness, I would not be able to sleep for days, after that noise! And that is not a small window.
