Where's Winter?

It's supposed to be winter now up here in our neck o' the woods . . . but it's not.

We didn't get either of the "big" snows recently predicted.  Since the two inches we did get have been on the ground, our temps have stayed slightly above freezing both day and night which makes for slushy, slippery, messy walking out and about.  To say nothing of the current luge run state of our driveway.

The sun has apparently temporarily taken off for parts unknown, because we haven't seen it for a while.  The grayness makes the damp, mistiness of the air feel much colder than it is.  Do I sound totally humbug?  Not really as we've got it plenty warm and cozy inside.  No complaints there.  But I am eager for true winter time to arrive.

The ice on our pond resembles the "rotten ice" we see in the spring.  Our waterfowl have discovered they can poke holes in it here and there without falling through, so it's those openings they've been hanging around, submerging their heads for a good, refreshing drink.  Seems pond water tastes better than the pans of water we keep out for them.

The weather people are now telling us we're to expect nothing but rain for the next several days.  So.  I ask again, where is winter?

Time for me to take down the fall through Thanksgiving decorations and pull out all the boxes relating to Christmas.  That's on my schedule for tomorrow.  We frequently put up our Christmas tree right after Thanksgiving, but this year it doesn't seem like that time can be here already.

I haven't had a bathroom rug for in front of the sink that coordinated with my holiday themed shower curtain so I picked out some Aunt Lydia's Rug Yarn I purchased on eBay (it's no longer manufactured) and just this morning finished putting the fringe on the ends of it.

It measures 23" x 33" excluding fringe, made to fit in the particular area where we'll use it.

I think I did a purdy darn good job of choosing rug yarn that matches the fabrics in the shower curtain.

Now, if I could just find my magic wand, walk through the house twirling it over my head, and have the old decorations down and put away and all the holiday ones in place.  Whoopee!  Ha, if only.

  1. Beautiful rug; perfectly coordinated! Had to laugh; our winter IS gray, damp, and misty – ha! Having lived through one winter of your type of winter (Perham, MN), I'll take our liquid refreshment any day. ;-)

We're talking about not even putting up a Christmas tree this year, and I'm feeling rather free and light about that. The 12-15' ones we get do kind of take over the house, and having them fall over two years in a row sent a strong message that I'm willing to heed.

    1. Michelle - There is no doubt something wrong with me and my partner-in-crime as we love Minnesota winters, but so many folks like you, who have experienced them, wouldn't live here for nuthin'!

As far as you scaling back on the Christmas decorations this year, good for you! We could all experience that feeling of freedom and lightness . . . to give our full attention to more important aspects of the season.

  2. Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing. Our winters are definitely not like yours, but I would like to see some cooler temps. I was walking around in shorts on Thanksgiving day. We are supposed to get rain next week, too. We sure need it. You did good matching your rug colors to your shower curtain.

    1. Laurie - Walking around in shorts on Thanksgiving Day. Hardly imaginable to us northerners! :o)

  3. Love the rug, great colors. I bet it is warm and cosy. I hope we don't get snow for awhile yet. Must be getting old.

    1. Myrna - Love the snow, hate the ice. If only we could arrange it to have one without the other!

  4. The rug is a wonderful match and I love love love the shower curtain. I've been on the lookout for a new holiday shower curtain because the one we've used for several years is pretty dark. It's ridiculous how expensive some of them have gotten!

    1. Sarah - It was my inability to find a (an affordable one!) shower curtain I liked that inspired me to make ones for the different seasons. Probably no more economical (considering time, fabric and effort!) but more satisfying!

  6. Nice rug! We're putting away our fall stuff tomorrow. It was a warm almost 60 degree day today so we got the outside Christmas stuff up. Next weekend I'll get my generic winter things out.

    1. LHinB - We've never put lights up outside, but I do hang a wreath on the various doors. I do Christmas related decorating inside until after New Year's and then pack all that away and get out my generic winter things.

    1. Dawn - After our long, warm fall I thought we would be hit by hard, cold winter also . . . but it certainly hasn't happened yet. I'm really wondering what this winter will be like . . .

  8. Love the rug-you have soooooooo much talent!

Our winter is gone too. Drippy rain every day. I have no desire to decorate for Christmas--my fall display above the stove stays for another week. Hopefully by then the snow is flying again and I'm feeling "Christmas-y".
    Have a great week

    1. Sue - Thank you, sweet lady, but I don't feel it takes much talent to do my very limited crocheting stitches. I was watching a TV program yesterday (while putting the fringe on the rug) on advanced dressmaking. Fascinating, although not something I'm ever going to get into. But I was wishing I had one skill that was truly outstanding, something I excelled at. (Wonder if annihilating dust bunnies or scouring sinks qualifies?? If so, I'd better up my game in those areas!)

    2. I would say you are pretty outstanding at being a friend, and one I think EVERYONE here would agree with.
Now excuse me. I'm going to go do a SNOW DANCE. Darn cloudy drippy weather........

  9. Your sunshine is hanging out here in NC! Very dry but sunny. Love the rug colors and design. You are SO talented. I have NO skills with the needles.

  10. My husband brought a small tree in from storage on Thursday morning. Then he said he thought we should be done decorating - which I'm not. I have a stack of boxes out but little motivation. Maybe one a day?

    1. SmartAlex - Boy, am I ever with you in the "little motivation" department! But the Christmas decorations will be up and enjoyed a short month so I'm making myself get on with it. Seems the longer I put it off, the more it bothers me.

    2. Usually I take a whole day and do a decorating marathon. This year I'm doing it as it comes to me.

  11. Mama Pea,

I think your snow went further east. Have you seen the snow storms on the east coast?

Love your bathroom sink rug, and very well coordinated with your shower curtain. Nicely done dear friend!!!

Have fun decorating for Christmas, I still have to pull my decorations out.

    Hugs,
    Sandy

    1. Sandy - Yes, I've seen pictures (Susan's in upper NY) of the heavy snows the East Coast has had. Rain starting late tonight for us and continuing for 2 days. Ugh.

I thought I'd get my Christmas decorating done today . . . but didn't. Will have to finish up tomorrow. Still have to get a tree, too.

  13. Oh, I LOVE the colors in that rug! It's perfect (as usual...) It's so hard to get into the holiday spirit with no fluffy white stuff on all outside surfaces. Heck, it's just hard to get into the spirit, period. Let's hope that you get your winter back. I'd be happy to send some of mine... :)

    1. Susan - It's STILL raining here! I have no idea how much we've gotten 'cause I took the glass tube of the rain gauge in a month ago thinking we were actually gonna have winter weather and it might freeze. Fat chance! We have puddles everywhere and lots of mud. Can hardly believe it's almost the first of December and here we are with totally spring-like weather. Hard even to get up the enthusiasm for putting up holiday decorations. Go ahead and package up some of your tons of snow and send it to Minnie-soda, please!

  14. Mama Pea how is the magic wand working? Love the rug and it will be a nice bit of fluffy eye candy for feet. So sorry about your snow apparently we need to speak with those folks on the East side of you. I would share but all I have to share at my elevation is rain. A bit up the hill I could package up some snow for you. If you build it they will come?

    1. Goatldi - Still raining here! Yikes, time to start building the ark?

Finally got the outside window boxes denuded of their pumpkins and fall leaves, added evergreen boughs and poinsettias (fake, but cheery looking). Tried to get a Christmas tree today but couldn't find one small enough for the space we have for one. That's all that's left to do though. :o)
