New Pillowcases

Now there's a post title that I'll bet was a real interest grabber!

But have you priced pillowcases lately?  Geesh, for what seems to be a simply constructed item, I experienced a bit of sticker shock when looking for some new colored ones to coordinate with the bed quilt I finished a few months ago.

Since I'm basically a penny pincher economically minded, I revved up the old creative juices and came up with the idea of making some.

I had yardage of some yellow/gold fabric I could use along with some leftover blocks from the construction of the quilt.

Here's the result.

I'm very pleased with the way they turned out, and when things slow down a bit this winter I just may make another set.

* * * * * * * *

I probably should explain about the three pillows on our bed.  (Inquiring minds want to know, and all.)  Once a friend, upon getting a glimpse into our bedroom and seeing the three pillows, inquired as to how often we had a third party join us.  (Smart aleck.)

You see, my husband is a nice guy and all but claims he can't sleep with me wound around him.  So I use the third pillow as a substitute, getting a strangle hold on it, and we both sleep well.

Just thought you'd like to know.  Or not.

  2. Ha-we do the same thing!
    Love those pillowcases!-you are so clever. They're prettier than anything you could ever find in the stores.

  3. I found pillowcases for only $15 each. I left without pillowcases. Then, I went to Dollar General and found what I wanted--one pink pillowcase for only $3. In the past I have made pillowcases, too.

    1. PP - Congrats on your super find at Dollar General! I always feel there's a good bargain out there . . . it's just a matter of finding it!

  4. They are very pretty and I so agree on the price being outrageous for a set in the stores. I have made mine for years. Because we have 8 pillows on our bed and it would cost me a fortune! Only 2 of us sleep in the bed!!

    1. Kim - Eight pillows on your bed!? Now I don't feel I have to "justify" my three! ;o}

  5. There would be nothing in any store that could touch those! They are beautiful!!! I have four pillows and it's just me and the occasional addition of the dachshund.

    1. Susan - I'm sure "the dachshund" appreciates the extra pillows! ;o}

  6. I'm "extremely careful with money" as well ;) I love your pillow cases. And yes, the price of linen in general is ridiculous as the quality lowers sigh...they're so easy to make, I need to get cracking on some too. Oh, we have five pillows on our bed, one for each of us and three for the dogs lol...

    2. And three cats...on a queen-sized, very lumpy mattress. We have no self-control when it comes to the pets. :)

  9. Fun pillowcases - love the design. We have five pillows on our bed - and all get used each night - sometimes six. We do love our pillows.

  10. Ha ha! Had to laugh because Hubby does the same thing with a pillow. I do love the covers! And yes the stuff sold in stores is very expensive these days. We have one set and it's rough getting them washed and dried and back on in these busy canning days.

    1. Vera - Thanks so much. I've been quilting for about twenty-two years now (doesn't seem that long and why can't I find time to do it more?) and really, really enjoy it. It's at the top of my list of things to do this winter.

  15. I agree with you on the price of pillow cases...quite insane! I just made some from a sheet set that we got from the Goodwill. It was a double when we have a queen sized mattress and we got it in a bag of comforters that cost us 15.00. One comforter was still in its store bag! Anyway I am going to steal your idea for that third pillow for Ralph! Your bed looks beautiful!

    1. Fiona - Thank you for the kind words! We have a wonderful "second hand" store and I scoured it for my "new" pillow cases but they didn't have any in brighter colors. I didn't even think of looking for a sheet I could cut apart. What a good idea!

  16. Nice job! I always buy my sheet and pillowcases at Ross, basically a outlet store. Great stuff, good prices.

    1. LHinB - Have never heard of Ross so it must not be in our part of the country. Darn. We could use something like that for bed linens!

  17. This is an absolutely fantastic idea!!! Coordinates with your quilt as well as the quilt hanging above your bed. Perfect.

    1. Lisa - Thank you! I was afraid my bed quilt and the one I have on the wall above the bed didn't coordinate enough . . . but now that you say it, they do have the same colors and tones. Whew! Now I feel better. ;o]
