Dear Sunshine . . .

Please stop fooling with us.  After a few days of lovely sunshine, we're back to heavy, gray, cloud-covered skies.  We were supposed to have bright sunshine all day today, but so far it's a wet, drippy repeat of yesterday.

None the less, our snow is melting.

I thought I'd try to chronicle the melting of our snow by taking a picture each day of the raised garden beds closest to the house.  Here I'm standing on the platform by our hand pump and you can see the wood framing of a few of the beds starting to peek through.

How long until the whole beds are uncovered and free of snow?  Most likely a loooonng time!  Spring does not come easily (or rapidly) up here.

I stripped the bed yesterday right down to the mattress and washed sheets and mattress pad.  (I even enlisted Papa Pea's help in flipping and turning our king-sized mattress.  What a comedy of errors that was.  Shoulda had a video.)  I wanted in the worst way to hang everything out on the clothes lines, but managed to talk myself out of it.  Not only was there no sun and much dampness in the air, but by afternoon a light drizzle had started.  I think I made a good decision.

If you're interested in the giveaway of the Easter quilted wall hanging advertised in my previous post, don't forget to get your name in the hat by 9 p.m. tonight in order to be eligible for the drawing tomorrow.  Good luck to all who enter!

  1. You have snow. Sob. I don't think we had more than 5 inches of snow this winter. It was outrageous. Today we are enjoying (those of us able to be outside) a very warm day that is predicted to break all previous records. Whiplash comes to mind.

    1. Susan - I noticed that you were supposed to get very warm weather today. So you don't have any snow left on the ground now? Wow. You may have a really early spring. Get out those gardening tools!

  2. Well, I don't want to sound like I'm rubbing it in, but we have sunny skies and 75 degrees outside. It won't stay this warm for long...although the forecast is pretty much the same all week. We are bound to have another cold snap before we can start the garden. I did plant some pansies in pots, today. And started some geraniums seeds indoors. I can't wait to get in the garden, though. However, I know once the heat and humidity have set in that I'll be wishing I lived up there on your tundra.

    1. Laurie - 75 degrees. I don't know what to say. We won't see weather that warm for . . . well, who knows how long! Enjoy!

I've always heard geraniums were very difficult to start from seed. No?

Yes, we do have the advantage (at least we think it's an advantage) of rarely having any sustained hot, humid weather in the summer. Ooops, having said that out loud, this summer will probably prove me wrong and be one for the record books!

  3. I always enjoy watching the snow recede from my raised beds. And with all the sandy soil we have, a couple of good sunny days does wonders. Hope your sun returns soon!

    1. Sue - Our temp has been dropping all day. Ugh. And it looks like we'll have freezing weather tonight. Great, that will bulk up all the melting ice we have out there. I really do think I'd feel safer if I put on my ice skates when going outside. How weird would that look? Think about it.

  5. Mama Pea,

    Darn weather, constantly changing......
You have snow after all that beautiful sun. I'm sure you'll have a couple of sunny days in your near future to melt off that snow.
Like you, we had several beautiful days. Then the storms rolled in threatening us with hail and tornadoes. Once the rain stopped, our temperatures took a nose dive.
I have 21 strawberry plants to plant and more coming. Please heat up!!!

    1. Sandy - Ugh, hail and tornadoes! Not something I like to think about nor, I'm sure, something you like to have the threat of!!

The sun came out here this afternoon and things are dripping like crazy. Hoping more of the snow and ice disappears.

What kind of strawberries are you putting in? Last year I planted Annapolis, Cavendish and Earliglow.

  6. Just thought that I would have to tell you that here in Iowa I have rhubarb coming up, and the pot of chives are up about 3 inches and nice and green. Strange weather even for this far south.

    1. Myrna - Oh, my goodness! Sure sounds like you're going to have an early spring this year. Even though we still have a lot of snow to melt, it's not as much as usual for this time of year so I'm kind of hoping for an "early" spring here, too.

Rhubarb will be the first "fruit" out of the garden for us, too, so just this week I made a rhubarb cobbler with frozen rhubarb . . . thinking ahead to having fresh to use again soon. Well, not really soon, but it will happen! :o]
