I Did It Again

I couldn't stop myself.  I just had to do it.  I started a new project . . . but I also finished it!

Another crocheted rag rug using strips of fabric.  Not only did I get a nice rug out of the project, but I'm using up fabric that I've had in my stash since for-EVAH (would you believe the 1980s?) and which was probably about ready to self-destruct from old age.  (Not quite that bad.  But almost.)

This one is for the bathroom in front of the sink.  The couple of rounds of red I put in to snazz it up a bit look almost glow-in-the-dark in these pictures.  In real life (real rug life?) they blend in a bit more.

We may have finally entered into real winter time temperatures.  Day before yesterday we had 2-3" of heavy, wet snow.  What else could it be other than heavy and wet when the temperature was at 34° the whole time?

Yesterday the temps dropped all day and this morning we woke to -2°.  Looks as though it will go below zero again tonight.  Brrrr!

I've been going on and on about the fact that I want to catch up on my sleep this winter.  This morning I got up around about the usual time, staggered around for a few minutes in the kitchen . . . and then went back to bed.  Slept until 10 o'clock!  And it felt gooood.  I really would be smart if I'd let myself do that more often when the mood struck.  Now that our temps are hovering in the deep freeze and the days are still on the short side, it's a good time for spending more time in the Land of Nod.  Me and the big, ol' fat hibernating bears.

  1. Oh love the two rugs - I have one in mild shades of blues - it goes under our dining room table - took me a long time to make that - and then I made on in greens for my cousins dining room. Those things get heavy - I finally had to start moving my chair around the rug as I crocheted rather than moving the rug. Happy snoozing - you little bear.

    1. JoAnne - You made one big enough to go under your dining room table?! Now THAT is impressive! And then still had enough oompf to make another one for your cousin. Kudos to you, my friend!

      Going to bed now. Night-night! ZZZZZzzzzz . . .

  2. Love your rugs. Can I come up sometime before real winter sets in 7 you teach me how to make them? Sleep is NOT overrated, get as much as your body needs, & then some.

    1. DFW - Don't look now, but "real winter" has set in! My gosh, it's been cold today . . . just a few degrees above zero with light snow. (But I would love it if we could get together for some rug making!) As far as sleeping, wouldn't ya know it, I was WIDE awake from 3 to 5 a.m. this morning. *&$%#!, that makes me mad!

  3. Beautiful... I can't crochet worth a darn (remember the "dishcloth" I sent you? LOL). I've been super tired lately, don't know if it's not enough sunlight, stress or the dreaded menopause... Is that TMI?

    1. Ruth Dixon - Your crocheting abilities are NOT that bad!

Ya know, I hadn't thought about our severe lack of sunlight being the cause of my tiredness. (See? I need some sleep so I can think straight!)

  5. Nice rug, it looks fantastic. Now when you finish all your unfinished projects could you come here and finish up all of mine too. I think I have a baby quilt I bought when the kids were small and I still haven't even started it.

    1. Sparkless - I'll be right over as soon as I finish all my unfinished projects. The only catch is I'm a'feared it will take YEARS for me to get mine done! I think you better start on your own right away!

  7. I made a room-sized chevron-crocheted rug once when I was younger. Unfortunately I didn't think ahead to how I would wash it. Yes. Rag rugs are heavy, heavy, heavy.

    1. Ilene - Ya know, that is the one drawback of them . . . their weight, especially when they are wet! I can't imagine making a room-sized one!! What a project.

  9. I love all sorts of weather... when you don't have to be anywhere.

Wet snow, 2 degrees, hibernating.... sounds like a great weather forecast to me :)

    1. Kiina - Yes, that's the thing . . . if you don't HAVE to go out in it or travel on unsafe roads!

I noticed on your Profile Page that you list a favorite book as "The Blue Castle." When I was in junior high school (this would have been way back in the 1950s) I found that book on my grandparents' bookshelf, read it and loved it. I've never forgotten it. Did you know it was originally published in 1926?

  11. Very, very pretty! You did a fantastic job on this one. I have purchased and saved sheets for crocheted rag rugs for years. Yep, I checked - they are all there in the tubs, right where I left them.
Hope you can catch up on your sleep.
Truly enjoy your site - I'm a new follower.

  12. Love the rug. Beautiful fabric colors too. I'm afraid my fabric scraps are antique in age and color, ha ha! Lucky you to sleep in. Pups get us up way too early here.

    1. Kristina - I don't know why I feel so guilty thinking about sleeping in. There were many, many years when it surely would have been an impossibility!

I think no matter what colors you use for a rag rug, it comes out perfect in its own way.

  14. I make these same rugs. They are so much fun. I have made several for my friends and have one on my husbands side of the bed. I have several quilting friends that give me their left over binding. Which is perfect since it's 2 and half inches. Plus my house is now the new home of unwanted fabric.

    1. Michelle - Left over binding material. What a good use for it! What a pretty, scrap rug that would make.

    1. Sandy - Although we didn't think winter was ever going to arrive up here, it finally did. And, wow, what a difference in the amount of wood we're going through! Funny how that works.

Although many have said they or their mothers did it, I can't imagine making a room-size rag rug. But I'm betting it was the only way some of our ancestors could get a covering for the floor that no doubt made the room warmer.

  16. Both of my grandmas used to make those rag rugs all the time. Some of them were really large. I never did try one of those. :)

    1. FoxyLady - I wonder how they cleaned the large room-sized ones? I suppose just took them outside and used the carpet beaters. I remember my grandma doing that.

  17. Love your rag rugs!! I'm inspired. As for your winter temps, this California girl would turn into a popsicle if it got down to zero here!!

    1. Lori - Thank you! I wonder how long it would take for any of us to get acclimated to the different climates all across our country? Some would never acclimate, I bet. Even a good number of people who love it here in the summer time, would never dream of spending the winter in as much cold and snow as we have. Takes all kinds!

  18. Love that rug! I wish I could do that; go back to sleep but can't. My Sis can and sleep until noon!
That is one of the joys of retirement. So enjoy!

  19. gld - Making the rag rugs is hard on the hands and wrists, but so far I can do it if I take breaks from it now and then.

Most of the time when I wake in the middle of the night (which seems to be my problem!), I'm like you and can't fall back asleep . . . which frustrates me all to heck!
