Summer Fantasy

Every summer I revive my fantasy of spending June, July and August (okay, it's my fantasy so I'll throw in September, too) living in a simple, comfortable cabin on a lake.

Cabin must have a sturdy dock going out into the lake.  Big enough for a couple of lounge chairs on the end of it.  (I'm taking that guy I live with along.)  Hitches on either side of the dock for securing a canoe and kayak.

I'll need a small, inflatable raft for times I choose to be a big ol' sloth floating on the water.  (Maybe with a long rope I can tie to that dock so I feel secure I won't drift off to parts unknown.)  I'll also use the raft laid on the dock for a comfortable nap in the sun.  Listening to the soft, hypnotic sound of waves lapping up on shore is one of the most restful sounds I can think of.

But what is the most important part of this fantasy?  Books.  Books and more books.  I wouldn't even take any handwork with me.  (Shock and awe.)  I would read all. summer. long.  As much as I wanted to.  I would read in between leisurely paddles in the canoe or sipping liquid libation on the dock watching the moon come up.  Before and after meals.  Definitely in the evening hours before bed.  In front of a fire to ward off the chill breeze blowing in off the lake on a rainy day.  (Did I mention the cabin would have a small wood stove?)  Ah, guilt-free reading dawn to dusk.  And then some.  Sigh.

There are so many good books I've yet to read.  So little time to do it in my "normal" life.  Would I get my fill of reading if I did it for a whole summer?  I don't know.  But I sure do fantasize about living the dream.

  1. I just got in from planting 10 flats. I have one more wagon load of stuff to get in and then I'm done.
    I love your fantasy. It is my winter....but I wouldn't mind having a summer version--especially as you described it.
    I must fantasize winning the lottery first, so I can HIRE someone to do all my work for me.
    Happy Dreaming!

    1. Sue - Yes, that is the one big glitch. If I were gone all summer, there would be no garden, etc. :o(

      Can you even move after the day you just put in in the garden? I am just in from there, too, but I worked in pea soup thick fog. Where is summer??? Plus I did not plant 10 flats. Good grief!

  2. Mama Pea, I got to live your fantasy for 4 days last week. My sister & BIL have their camper at a nearby lake for 21 days. Every day I got up, walked a couple of miles, read, had breakfast, read some more, floated like a sloth for a while, read some more while sitting on the dock, went for a Jet Ski ride or boat ride, read some more, made & had dinner, showered & read myself to sleep. Oh, it was miserable going back to work on Thursday.

    1. DFW - Your comment just put one great big grin on my face. What a glorious 4 days it must have been! (Had to laugh, too, at your, "Oh, it was miserable going back to work on Thursday." I know it must have been!)

  3. You missed the most important part of the fantasy and that there would not be any biting bugs like mosquitoes to bother you. Oh, and the weather would always be sunny and warm but not too hot. That's my fantasy too.

    1. Sparkless - Absolutely! Definitely NO BUGS. And mostly sunny days, but I'll allow an occasional rainy day. Good for reading stretched out on the couch inside! ;o}

  5. That does sound divine! I agree with Sparkless... no bugs please. Do you also have someone else to make the meals? -Jenn

    1. Jenn - Well, that would be ideal . . . someone to cook the meals . . . but I'm so desperate I'd even do my own cooking. Simple cooking. (Although a small, rustic, home-cooking type restaurant very nearby wouldn't be bad, would it?)

  6. You could come down here and relax on the lake, but it would be a million degrees and the wind would be like a convection oven. I do like your version better.

    1. Carolyn - I will pass on your kind invitation to instantly become a baked, humid puddle. (Can you be baked and humid at the same time? I would.) Yep, let's us both stick with my version. ;o}

  7. It does sound lovely in a screened porch kind of way. I love being in the water close to it etc...but I am not liking the bugs!

    1. M.E.Masterson - In my fantasy there are no bugs. :o] Unfortunately, in reality, they have arrived here in northern Minnesota. The black flies are vicious. Ask me how I know. :o/

  8. You and me both! I would love to find a cabin on a lake somewhere. Every time Hubby and I have an area to drive around, we dream up which one we'd buy, ha ha! I would read too. Forget the knitting and crocheting....sigh...books. Lots of books.

    1. Kristina - Hubby and I have dreamed for so long about having a cabin on a lake. Wouldn't even have to have electricity or plumbing, just on a lake with a dock. But I don't know if it will ever happen. My better half says I'm not thinking of the work a cabin would involve . . . you know, upkeep, repairs, taxes, etc., etc. But I'm gonna keep dreaming!
