We were feeling quite perky after some down time in the months of January and February. We were ready to hit our spring/summer/fall To Do List with a vengeance. (Or as I said a couple of days ago, slowly so we didn't hurt ourselves.)
Last week it felt like spring time. Okay, so the thermometer showed only readings in the 40s, but for us that was spring time. We spent the week organizing so we could begin by getting off to a running start this week.
Mother Nature obviously has a mean streak. We've been working outside this week and freezing our beezers off. Our highs for day time are just above freezing and night time lows are back down in the low 20s. This afternoon we had snow for several hours, although with a temp of 35 degrees nothing accumulated on the ground.
But this is typical March weather for us. No matter how much we would like early, warm spring weather to arrive, we have to keep in mind we haven't had our March blizzard yet. And there is rarely a year when we don't get one. Or two.
Two years ago, we got the majority of our snow for the whole winter in April. (Now there's a depressing thought.)
My dictionary defines the word fickle as likely to change, especially due to instability; erratic changeableness. Darn fickle weather.
No matter. We're tough. We'll keep at it since we are accomplishing tasks on our list. Besides, what's another month of wearing long johns? And slight cases of frostbite?
Mama Pea,
ReplyDeleteSince the weather has been fickle, maybe you won't have a March blizzard or two. Just maybe.......that winter blizzard will find itself in Florida instead, lol......
Stay warm when outside doing tasks on your list.....you don't want to get a case of frostbite....cuz that's no fun............
Sandy - I think the chances of frostbite are over for this season. Even at the mid-30s it's not hard to stay warm when moving and working outside! Now, inside the house this morning? Brrrr, feels chilly! ;o)
DeleteWe've warmed to the upper 30's as well, but the winds have been ferocious. I am a wuss. I do not like wind and refuse to work outside in it. Still haven't set up my cold frames. Waiting for the winds to die down. Today is supposed to be -----53!!!!!!----but then back to 30's tomorrow. Fickle? No, psycho is more like it.
ReplyDeleteSue - Psycho is definitely more like it! Our temps aren't forecast to be anywhere near 53! Very gray today . . . 30% chance of snow, they say. That's okay 'cause there's plenty to do inside.
DeleteI expect rain, snow and everything in between, before March is over. It can rain one day and snow the next here. Crazy.
ReplyDeleteKristina - Yep, March is definitely like that! Gotta get out when it is nice, 'cause it could be raining (or snowing) next!
DeleteOh...But the sap is running gangbusters! Gotta get the fire going today to get it processed.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking the spinach I put in the south bed last week isn't going to be coming up any time soon. :)
odiie - Oh, good for you! I was wondering how the sap is running. I'm thinking (but don't know a lot about it) we haven't had warm enough temps and/or sunshine during our days yet.
DeleteMmmmm, doesn't fresh spinach from the garden sound wonderful!!? You'd better go out and talk nice to those little shivering seeds!
Well, as much as I don't care for "Spring" weather (the fickle part), I don't really mind wearing long johns, long sleeved shirts and sweaters (she's not fat, she's just layering) or the warmth of the wood stove. Spring will get to you guys.....say, around the end of July.
ReplyDeleteCarolyn - I was just thinking about not wearing so many clothes come summer . . . as I was layering my heaviest flannel shirt over another layer. (For INside wear.) I don't mind looking like the Pillsbury Dough Boy in winter, but in summer? It's embarrassing when having only shorts and a tank top on. :o(
DeleteFickle is right! Just as I was getting excited about the first day - we have a winter storm warning. Geez.
ReplyDeleteSusan - Hey, maybe "our" March blizzard has gone to your neck o' the woods!?
DeleteYes, I had put the longjohns away too! I was hoping to keep it that way. However, with 4 degrees a couple mornings ago, they came back out! Spring gets here is its own good time, in this country......not when the calendar says it's time! :)
ReplyDeleteFoxyLady - Anytime we try to control nature, we're in for a rude awakening, that's for sure! There may be some places that can truly celebrate spring according to the calendar, but that's nowhere in the north country!
DeleteI cleaned out the winter wear in the front room. It has been in the high 60's & 70's here....luv this weather. Do hope you warm up soon!
ReplyDeleteM.E.Masterson - In the 60s and 70s!? Spring (or I should say our non-spring) is the only time of year I wished we lived elsewhere! But I get over it. ;o}
DeleteYes, mother nature is in no way kind! But snow in April! That's cruel!
ReplyDeleteLeigh - Snow in April helps hold down forest fires! Haha! (But it really does . . . )
DeleteYes, you are tough and 'tough' is a good thing! Hang in there! Winter's gotta be closing down soon? April's almost here.... then May? Why does it feel like 2015 only just began though... when it's actually almost a quarter over?! Soon it'll be Christmas!!!! Ahhhhhh!!! :0
ReplyDeleteLisa - I've been so good this year in actually working on some Christmas gifts already (I know, I can hardly believe it) but it kinda sorta makes it seem like Christmas is closer than it really is!
