I Couldn't Stop Myself!

We haven't had any taters in this house since we consumed the last way too sprouted ones from last year's garden harvest early this spring.

When I've been trying to think of meals to make, a little voice in my head (or is it coming from my stomach?) has been chanting, "Potato Pancakes, hash browns, potato soup, mashed potatoes, potato salad," over and over again.

So the other day I grabbed my trusty garden trowel, put on my dirt-caked gloves and marched on out to the four long rows of potatoes growing in the garden.


Bonanza!  I struck it rich on my first dig!  (And, yes, I did manage to chop that one spud right in two with my trusty garden trowel.)

I was good to my meat and potatoes loving hubby who has been existing on salads and other fresh fodder from the garden and made him a meal of meat and potatoes and gravy.  (And a side of veggies fresh from the garden, of course.)  

He was very happy.  The potatoes tasted wonderful.  We are looking forward to a grand harvest of them this year.

  1. Those look wonderful! There is nothing - nothing! - like a fresh potato. I have managed to hold myself back and only steal two. But all bets are off this weekend.

    One day, one day before I'm dead, we're going to grow potatoes. Well, technically, there are sweet 'taters in the ground out in the garden, or what was left of them. The deer apparently LOVE sweet potato vines for breakfast (and lunch, and supper).

  4. Wonderful!! I know I snuck a "test" harvest as well. Hubby is still on restrictions, so none for him. I snuck a fried potato with onions this morning before he woke up. OMG. Heaven. On a plate!

  5. We love our first "new" potatoes from the garden. Usually we have them boiled with the skins on until lovely and tender with butter, salt and pepper, and maybe a little bits of raw onion too. Mmmn, heaven.

  7. Excellent! Mine didn't do so well, giving me maybe 20 extra small ones, so I am going to plant in straw next time.

    1. Stephanie - It will be interesting to see how your potatoes do under straw. I've done that several times as an experiment planting half my potatoes under straw and half under dirt, the old-fashioned way. Each time the straw method has yielded only half as many potatoes as those grown in dirt. Sure would be nice if it would work better for me under the straw though 'cause that's soooo much easier! Maybe in your climate the straw method will work just dandy. I'll be curious to see the outcome.

  8. De has been hinting I need to get out the potato fork and go find us some new potatoes. I'm guessing when she reads your post (or my comment) I'll be on my way to the shed and garden. Our potatoes look to be one of the things that did well this year.

    1. Mark - Well, if we all had to have all crops fail but one (did I say that out loud?), we would do well to have the successful crop be potatoes! Glad yours are looking good. The first potatoes of the year are just so yummy!
