I'm not sure what brought this burning question to the forefront of my mind, but I'm curious and would really like to know.

Nope, no point to it to just go out and destroy manicure. In the dirt and whatever, besides my nails never get long enough ...... oh well.
ReplyDeleteTombstone Livestock - So who says you have to have long nails to have them polished? I've heard they now have nail polish that holds up to working hands pretty darn well. Do you think it would hold up to the work we do??

ReplyDeleteMyrna - I suspect a lot of really nicely manicured nails you see these days are actually false nails. You know, stick on ones or whatever. But I wouldn't want to try that because of the chemicals in the "glue!"
DeleteYep, both, and LOVE 'em! Pedicures are better 'cause you don't have to do anything (like hold your hand up for a mani) but put your head back and RELAX! Most pedi chairs now are massage chairs, too. Most heavenly thing in the world next to a full-body massage!!!

ReplyDeleteI have, as a gift from my husband. It was nice to have someone else pamper my hands and feet while seating in this large leather massage chair. I walked out with no lumps or knots in my bad along with sexy hands and feet. And the pretty nails only lasted a couple of weeks, then it was back to the only finger nails beat up from working in the garden and doing dishes, lol....

DeleteI had my sister practice doing a manicure on me while she was going to esthetics school once. Her skills at putting nail polish on were pretty poor at that point and we had to remove the nail polish after because it didn't look very good. But other than that I've never had a manicure or a pedicure. I have had a facial which included dermabrasion and had my upper lip hair zapped with a laser. Only had a facial twice, once was a gift and the second time I went with my daughter who got a facial as a gift and was only 12 so couldn't go alone.
ReplyDeleteSparkless - When I was small, I remember my dear aunt letting me polish her toenails. What a sweetie (and indulgent aunt) she was. I know she must have had polish up to the first joint of each toe!
DeleteI went and had fake nails put on once when I was a young mother. Does that count as a manicure? I've never had a pedicure. At this point it seems a big waste of money in my mind. I have much better and more important things to spend my money on. I've gotten rather frugal in my old age LOL
ReplyDeleteFreedom Acres Farm - I think sensible is the word rather than frugal! The money is the thing that would stop me from a manicure or pedicure. I don't even know the going price but I'm betting it would seem astronomical to me.

ReplyDeletetammielee - When my mom was living in a complex of apartments for "older" folks, there was a man who came around and gave the occupants pedicures. She didn't have her toenails painted, but simply loved the way her feet felt after a session.
DeleteNope - but a pedicure sounds like fun - they give you a foot and ankle massage - ahhhhh that would be nice. I did used to have bright red toe nails - my daughter painted them for me.

DeleteYes. I have fake nails. If I had my way I wouldn't have them, but my husband LOVES to have his back scratched with them. He loves and takes such good care of me that I couldn't say no.

DeleteI've done the pedicure thing a few times and it's wonderful having your feet massaged but nail polish discolors my nails which I dislike so I stopped.
ReplyDeleteA LONG time ago (in a land before gardening) I was talked into doing those acrylic nails. SM LOVED them from a "scratch my back" perspective but they where awfully expensive to maintain.
Tami - Ha! Another back-scratching-lovin' husband!! (They have wooden back scratcher thingies that would be much more economical than the acrylic nails!)

DeleteI keep hearing and reading that we gals NEED to take more time for ourselves so we can be in better shape to take care of our families . . . but making the time doesn't seem to be something that comes easily. I suppose we could find the money if it was important enough to us. It just always makes more sense to us to use the $$ for stocking up the pantry or buying another blueberry bush! Or rain barrel. Or . . . putting it toward a new refridge??
My sister gave me a pedicure - does that count?? My hands and nails get too beat up to warrant the time and expense of a manicure. Besides, I might scare the manicurist to death, should I tote them (my hands) into some schmancy establishment. Now, I HAVE had one professional pedicure and I can still remember every exquisite second - it was over 10 years ago...

DeleteGosh, I think back to a hundred or so years ago when my job required me to "dress up" and I had heels and purses to match every outfit. Now I have one pair of heels in the closet that I wore for my daughter's wedding in 2000 (and not since then) and I carry the same purse year after year until it falls apart.
Never! I read a post once where she wore new heels as a tourist in NYC. Of course she was in agony by the end of the day and my thought was 'What an idiot! Nobody there cares what she wears or will ever see her again.'

DeleteOh, yes. I had manicures for years every two weeks. And, for a while I'd have pedicures every couple of months. Haven't had either in several years now. BUT they do give you the best "look at me" feeling. Manicures don't last long on hard working hands, but the toes seem to hold on better. And, if the tech knows what they're doing, its worth the money just for the arm and leg massage!! Maybe its time.

Hi, Florida Farm Girl! Thanks for commenting. So why did you stop having the manicures every couple of weeks? Change of lifestyle? Even though I've never had a professional manicure, I did keep my nails polished (by me . . . unprofessionally) until I got tired of having to do it every three days because of wear and tear.
DeleteI really like have my toenails painted and I usually do it myself, although it doesn't always look so hot. I have had a couple pedicures and really enjoyed them, but my shins are a little tender, so the massage part was not my favorite. The professional job sure looks and lasts much better!
ReplyDeleteMelissa - Yeah, I think the "lasting longer" part is what appeals to me about a professional manicure or pedicure. I do really like the looks of polish on a women's nails, but for me the up-keep is the problem.

My wife De, however, has recently started making the professional manicure/pedicure thing a semi-regular event as part of a "girls afternoon out" with the ladies from our Church small group. She always comes back smiling and full of laughter. (And with nice looking nails!)

DeleteI was kinda waiting for the first guy to chime in on this post! Men get massages so I would think a pedicure (perhaps omitting the nail polish!) would be a relaxing thing. Although I know no one would ever talk my hubby into it!
I would think your wife's "girls afternoon out" would be the most fun . . . friends to chatter with while getting the manicure and pedicure!
I have done both, a pedicure more often than a manicure. I enjoy both but I use my hands too much for a manicure to last. I'd have a pedicure every couple of weeks if I could afford it!
ReplyDeleteJen - I have a feeling I would be shocked to know the going cost of a pedicure or manicure these days. Same problem here with a manicure not lasting because of "doing" with my hands. Pedicures are hard to do on ones self though (I think) so that would be a nice treat.
DeleteI suppose it depends on where you live and where you go (fancy salon or a nail bar) as to how much it costs but most places I've seen have a pedicure "starting at $35" - the "starting at" always makes me giggle because I suppose they reserve the right to charge more if your feet are really gross LOL
