I saw this particular block in a quilt in a magazine and have wanted to make it for a while. I made my blocks 6" x 6". The whole quilt is 33" square.

It's all hand quilted which I've tried to show here . . . without a lot of success, I can see.
The big hold-up in finishing this piece was trying to decide the quilting design to do in the gold outer border. I suspected whatever I did wasn't going to show up prominently. I ended up doing two parallel wavy lines on top, bottom and each side. And suspicions confirmed, unless you're right up next to the quilt, you can't see the stitching at all.
I succeeded (and it wasn't hard) in using only fabrics from my stash for this wall hanging. Either there is something wrong with me or I DO have way too big a stash, because I have no desire whatsoever to purchase any more fabric right now.
With luck, I'll eventually get over that!
I don't quilt but I sure admire quilts, and the hard work it takes along with the patience's one must have to complete them.

Sandy - Thanks so much for your kind words. I believe quilting is an art form and although I'm certainly not as talented as some quilters, I can't think of a creative endeavor I enjoy more.

ReplyDeletetpals - When we talk of "quilting" a piece, that refers to the stitching done to bind the quilt top to the batting and backing. So, yes, I hand quilted this one. (You can also quilt a piece on a machine.) The piecing (sewing all the different pieces of fabric together) was done by machine. Our foremothers, who were often excellent quilters, did the piecing by hand, too. Now THAT was quilting in its purest form!

DeleteLove Love LOVE IT!! This is the pattern Evie picked out for all her fat quarters. It's nice to see it made up and your work is wonderful. I love the color choices for the border, makes the blocks *pop*. Um stash? Never to much, you can count it as insulation!

ReplyDeleteSusan - I keep a wall hanging in that spot year round . . . changing it with the seasons and/or holidays. I know I don't have as much yarn as you, but I bet I have more fabric!
