You've Heard of a "Farmer's Tan?"

I guess mine would have to be more correctly called a gardener's tan.

Dang. No way am I going to be able to wear my strapless evening gowns in the near future.

  1. Oh dear. You really got some color there--must have been concentrating on ????
Do you OWN an evening gown? Cuz if you do, do I know you??????
    LOL!

    1. Sue - I think I make a mistake in wearing the same style tank tops every day in the summer. I really need more variation in my wardrobe, don't you think?

Now, if I DID own an evening gown, where the heck would I wear it?? To the DQ on a Saturday night?

    1. Lisa - At least you s-l-i-d-e into your tan lines. You just may not qualify for The Gardener's Dumb Looking Tan Club!

  3. This is why naked gardening is an often overlooked way to combat these markings.

    1. Jane - Yes, but you present so much more flesh upon which the bitey beasties can feast!

  4. Ouch! I've been working on mine between running into the house to cool off; can you say "Swampass"?? I just know you wanted to know that about me :)

My Mom spends a lot of time out in her garden and I kid with her every year and say she looks like a Mexican! Nothing like us catfish-belly-white gals getting some much needed color in our skin!

    1. CR - I never think of having particularly "white" skin . . . until I get my summer color which does make my skin look catfish-belly-white!

  5. You know, I think you could still wear that gown with the tan. Adds to the design element! Next time you go to DQ, give it a shot. Oh, and go for broke and wear the muck boots with it. You'll be the talk of the town!

    1. Lori - Well, I've worn my Sorel boots with my dressiest outfit to an event in the winter, so I don't know why I couldn't wear my muck boots in the summer!

  6. Nice color Mama Pea. I wear unflattering 'wife beater' tank tops and camisole types. And, like Carolyn Renee, I'm catfish-belly-white. Laughed out loud at that one...

    1. DFW - Maybe I need to make a strapless top with elastic around the top (as if I could keep THAT up!) to wear in the garden. Then I would be evenly bronnnnzzzed on top!

  7. I say every year I need to get rid of this farmer's tan ... but always forget to do it in spring when it's not to hot an won't burn. I had sunburns. But I don't need to worry about my evening apparel since it is still jeans and t-shirts .................

    1. Tombstone Livestock - Yup, I'm with you all the way. A clean (not stained) outfit of jeans and t-shirts is 'bout as dressy as I get, too.

  8. Simply Scaife Family - No, no "ouch" to it. I'm not burned at all. My tanned color is just kind of a bronze color. I think it turned out a little "orange-ier" in the picture than it really is. I am lucky in that I have skin that rarely does burn.

  9. I like your tan...shows you're a worker bee! I can always tell those in the "group" that actually do something, and not just talk about it...the Farmer's tan never lies!

    1. Lynda - Thank you! I always feel so much better when I have a little tan on my face. (Doesn't take quite so much make-up to look decent!) Although I tan easily, it doesn't stay with me very long once winter hits. It's been so hot lately that I sure couldn't work outside if I had to cover up to prevent tanning for some reason.

  10. Lovely color! I used to look like that but darker by the end of the summer. Guess you will too. I am not going to tell my husband that you have a DQ nearby. He loves their Blizzards and there isn't any DQ anywhere near us. Poor guy. He doesn't ask for much. Hmmm, maybe I should find out how to make them. Do you have your Mom's old Blizzard recipe by any chance? hehehe I would love to see a photo of you at the DQ in your gown, tan lines, and muckers though. Hey, there's you next Halloween costume already picked out!

  11. Karen L. - Oh, I used to love Blizzards, too! Although we have a DQ in our small town, I haven't been in there in, I'll bet, more than five years. How hard could it be to figure out how to make a Blizzard? I'll bet we could all get good and fat experimenting!!

  12. I think your gardener or farmer tan is just lovely. It proves you work hard outside, and I think that speaks volumes!! And anyhow, evening gowns are over-rated. :)

    1. Mama Tea - You're right! Evening gowns are over-rated. Matter of fact, I'm going to send my regrets for all those summer galas at the country club that I've been invited to. (Hee-hee.)

  13. Oh my! That looks more like a burn than a tan but then maybe my screen color is just off a bit. Either way who wants to wear an evening gown? Those are the most uncomfortable things ever designed. You have to wear all those bump slimming undies and high heels. ACK! My feet just thinking about it.

    1. Sparkless - "Bump slimming undies?" I think I need some of those for every day wear!! And the last time I wore heels? Heck, when WAS the last time I wore heels??

    2. Yes, you know the kind that suck you in so much you pretty well have to squeeze your way into them with a tube of grease and a spatula.
And we think we don't have any torture undergarments now that corsets and girdles are no more. HA! Put on a pair of those spanx things and see if you can breath.

    3. Sparkless - That makes me think way back to high school. There was a hefty gal who always wore those terrible, awful, heavy Playtex girdles and I can still remember her struggling to get into it after gym class. Oh, what we women do to ourselves!

  14. Evening gown or sequined overalls, LOL. That looks like an "ouch" though.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Leigh - I promise you it's not a burn. Just a couple of month's worth of tan build-up. If I had allowed myself to get an owie burn like that I wouldn't be stoopid enough to advertise it!!

Ya know, I'm sure there are sequined overalls out there . . . maybe all we homesteading gals need to find a pair, huh?

  16. I have suggestion - tube top! LOL

I have a similar look going on but I was wearing a spaghetti strap tank and DID get a burn on my shoulders and back. Ouch! It will darken up and then I'll be in business :)

    1. Jen - Duh! Tube top! Well, ya!

What I want to know is why when you're wearing a tank top or such and shorts, you can end up with all kinds of sun on your shoulders, arms and neck but none on your legs! Not fair!

  17. You could always lie on your belly to do the weeding - but then only the back of your legs would benefit :)

    1. Jen - I knew a lady who was grossly overweight but wanted to try planting a garden. She couldn't bend over or kneel so she really did stretch out on her belly to plant, weed, etc. I have to give her credit but it was not a pretty sight.

  18. I like the way Lynda thinks! Even though we're now told the sun isn't so good for us, I just always feel better with a little sun. I think you look tan, fit and healthy. And by the way, LOVE your new header. That flower is beautiful.

  19. Lisa - I have a theory. If your body is being given whole organically raised foods and proper nutrition, you react differently to the sun. Just think back a hundred years to before we polluted the environment, soil and foods. Did people have sun screens to slather on their bodies then? But I shouldn't get started on that either. Studies have proven that sun screens have ingredients that are actually cancer causing. It makes me shudder to think of babies and children having that stuff put on their delicate skin. We need to remember the skin absorbs everything we put on it. If we put it on our skin, it's the same as eating it.

Thanks for the kind words re my new header. The flower is a nasturtium.
