A Discombobulated Day

Ever have one of those days that didn't go in the least bit the way you planned it would? "Course you have. Keeps life interesting. Or makes you tear your hair out. It's all in the way we handle it. (Handling it in the "better" way is sometimes more difficult than others.)

The good part of this day was that it drizzled lightly on and off all day. The rain gauge shows 4/10ths of an inch now a little before 7 p.m. More moisture (yay!). We'll take all we can get. Wish I could route some of it to those of you who still need it so badly.

Another day when I didn't get out to do the garden tour to blog about. Sigh. I will get it done one of these days. Just so I'd have a picture or two to include with this post, I tritzed out through the wet, wet grass and took these three shots.

This is a beautiful, healthy looking mound of pumpkin leaves. I can't figure out why it's staying so "all together" and refusing to send out vining tendrils.

The red kuri squash planted at the same time is running all over the place.

My experimental corn is doing very well. It's tasseled out and even has little ears of corn forming! I know this probably is far behind those of you growing corn down in the Banana Belt where you don't have any trouble getting yours to mature, but for us up here in the North, it's lookin' good.

Tomorrow is mapped out to be a very busy day. Hubby and I have errands to run in the morning including going to look at some black dirt we may invest in. The new raised beds we are putting in are deeper than the previous old ones and although we'll add compost to them this fall, some more dirt wouldn't hurt either.

Early afternoon will find me driving about twenty miles down the road to get some upholstery sample books so I can start making forward progress thinking about living room furniture.

Tomorrow night is Girls' Night Out for catch-up time with some friends. I'm pretty sure I'll have to fit harvesting blueberries and raspberries in the day somewhere, too. I haven't checked carefully, but some of my shell peas look as though they might be filled out enough for picking also.

Even if some raspberries would have to be sacrificed (by more rain that is forecast), that wouldn't be the worst thing because we still need the moisture. We'll just take whatever comes tomorrow and deal with it. In a good way.

  1. Nice looking pumpkin leaves. I think our pumpkin plants are still only a few leaves and rather pitiful looking. I doubt we'll get any cucumbers or pumpkins.

Have fun on your night out.

  3. We ended up with just over 2" of rain. I'm thrilled. And I think that corn of mine grew 6" in appreciation. And yet, when I went out to pull a few weeds, it was still "dust" just under the surface.
Have fun on your night out, just not so much that the cops are called-LOL!

    1. Sue - Don't ya have to wonder just WHERE the 2" of rain could have gone?

I can assure you there will be no law enforcement called tonight. (Not unless somebody speeds on the way home! Or the restaurant where we will be get held up.)

  4. You are so lucky, we have had only 2 minutes of rain on Tuesday, where we live in Italy the next town a few Kilometers away had heavy downpours for about an hour, we are so envious.

    1. caprejan - Welcome and thanks for commenting all the way from Italy! Our county here is a big one with many different land masses so it's not unusual for one little area to get enough rain and one close by to be too, too dry.

  5. We are growing red kuri this year for the first time. Sure is a prolific vine producer. Hope it grows squash as well as it grows vines...

    1. 2 Tramps - Red kuri is now the only winter squash I grow. I just love it. It's been my experience that they will mature even after frost kills the vines. Hope yours turn out as well.

  6. Gee, even though you were only able to post a few photos of your garden, it is so beautiful and you have to feel great as you walk around out there. My corn grew tall.... made ears.... made fat ears... made large, fat, round ears we were drooling over thinking how wonderful that sweet white home-grown corn would taste grilled on the grill.... not one single ear's kernels are 'complete'. Truly, utter disappointment. I am envious.... and drizzle?.... moisture?.... what's that? :) Have a good Friday running errands with your husband and have a terrific girl-time with your friends! Sounds like fun!

    1. Lisa - I have yet to show the "ugly" in my garden. I have so many insects doing damage and "funny" things happening to my flowers. Ugh. Not a happy gardening year.

  7. Discombobulated could be my middle name. You have to go with the flow when you homestead - and thank goodness for rain! Your pumpkin plants look marvelous! I have once again turned to square inch gardening and I am sure I will be very sorry come the end of summer. How exciting to be picking out upholstery fabric! The end is in sight! Right? Right?

    1. Dear Ms. Discombobulated - Now that I've looked at some upholstery fabric and seen how expensive it is, I'm seriously rethinking my plans. We have a few extra kitchen-type chairs. I may just put those in the living room and call it done. ;o\

  8. Ha! Your corn is not behind mine. It is about a foot and a half tall. I think I am going to give up on it. Wow new furniture-Nice!

    1. Jane - Is it lack of moisture that's keeping your corn from growing? Hang in there, you still have a long time before frost. Maybe. This summer, who the heck knows?

  9. Maybe the pumpkins aren't spreading because of the lack of rain? Keeping close together may be the only thing preserving their moisture. Just a guess :) Hope you have a fabulous weekend, and the rain keeps coming down.

    1. Stephanie - It's so curious the squash is sending out tendrils that are headed for the next county . . . but the pumpkins are still this compact, lovely, great big bush!

  10. Mama, I think the pumpkin are playing hide and good seek this year. All show. I've 8 plants and have found only 2 pumpkin. Loaded with blooms but these girls are stingythis year!

    1. Katidids - Well, at least you've got blossoms! That's more than I have. I've only got four plants . . . and no pumpkins!
