If all goes well, I think I can finish all the planting in the garden tomorrow. And since Thursday is forecast to give us heavy rain all day (which we need), I think it would behoove me to try to do just that.
My two clumps of chives are in full bloom right now. I think every garden should have chive plants simply for the lovely blossoms they offer so freely.
The day today was gorgeous . . . lots of sun, low 70s and a nice breeze. I was in one part or another of the garden all day. Besides several other things, Papa Pea got the lawn cut. I feel guilty about that since the lawn mowing is supposed to be my job this summer. But I do have an excused absence from the task until I get the garden in. Once I'm on top of that it will be me and the lawn mower spending quality time together at least once a week for the rest of the season.
Do you think I'll actually finish all the planting tomorrow? I should be able to get in all the planned main things. Somehow it seems I keep finding empty spots in which to stick seeds or plants throughout the whole season. Wouldn't want to waste any little bit of good garden space, would we?
Hope you're all having a good week.
I hope you're able to get all you've planned finished up! It's so nice to have a big job like that finished up and watch the miracle unfold. :)
ReplyDeletePatty - I DID finish up all the planting today! But, boy howdy, wasn't it hot again out there?
DeleteHoping you got it all in! Our first "chance" of rain is Thur. night. I hope you get a good amount!
ReplyDeletedr momi - The forecast is still saying 70% of heavy rain tomorrow. We shall see!
DeleteNope you don't want to waste any good space. Besides you never know what is going to survive and do well and what isn't so it's just hedging you bets that way.
ReplyDeleteGood luck getting it all planted tomorrow.
Sparkless - I still have some raised beds that will remain empty this year . . . but that's because they are literally falling apart and we have to replace them.
DeleteDr. papa pea can write excused absences? I need one ,it should be short and sweet, but to the point,"Judy snapped ,gone on strike" he doesn't do labor issues you say? oh well,I will have to deal with all the new issues,1/2 of Kentucky are coming to stay ,that be the in-laws from home and garden, white glove society- lol, need help in the garden,NO brown thumbs allowed,OK,I'll dig my own, 6ft deep- I'll leave a pot of grits on the stove and head to a air con mall
ReplyDeletejudy - You just gotta do what ya gotta do to survive sometimes! I think your idea of the pot of grits on the stove and you disappearing is a darn good idea! You go, Girl!
DeleteI'm sure you will get it all in. I know how you feel though....I have a list of little tasks that I am trying to get my way through, for each room of the house. Seems never ending.
ReplyDeleteStephanie - Are you going crazy yet living with your "packed up" household? If not, you're a better woman than I am!
DeleteWhen you are done with your garden can you come help with mine? No big projects necessary, just some guidance on what is something and what is a weed :)
ReplyDeleteJen - It's always a year or so of surprises (and scratching of the head) when you move to a new place. It will be kinda fun though figuring out what is already planted there, what you want to keep and what you don't like.
DeleteI dont like cutting the grass. thank heavens the Ice Man loves it and is often out there at midnight zipping around. (now I know why he needed a light bar). So what job did Papa Pea get then. Dish washing? Cooking? Clothes washing?
ReplyDeleteJane - I think when I'm finally into the mowing mode, he'll be spending quality time with the chain saw cutting up fire wood!
DeleteIf the Ice Man mows at midnight, he must REALLY like the job!
I have chive-envy! It's the only item we planted that didn't come up. (I think I didn't give it the optimum soil conditions, so it's most likely my fault.)
ReplyDeleteBut the photo you posted is lovely! :)
PS: You can have some of our rain - we've had quite enough in our tiny, soaked garden.
Reasonable Season - Chives take FOREVER to germinate when planted from seed. Go to a nursery and buy a started plant or two. They're very reasonable. Either that or get a piece of a friend's clump. They divide very easily.
DeleteWell, I'm sending rain wishes your way! I hope you get everything planted in time to take advantage of it.
ReplyDeleteThe Weekend Homesteader - Thanks for the rain wishes . . . we need it! All seeds and transplants are in as of about 4:30 this afternoon. :o)
DeleteThere's nothing like a lovely day out in the garden - that doesn't involve mowing lawns! That is why I am filling my sizeable front yard with my garden. Less lawn/more garden!
ReplyDeleteSusan - We are replacing our deck next summer (on account of how it is rotting away underneath our feet!) and I'd like to extend it out over about 1/2 acre of lawn we now have to mow! Sound like a good idea?
DeleteThe chives are lovely! You're making me think I need to grow some too.
ReplyDeleteI need to finish planting as well. Seems like every time I schedule a garden day, it rains! Hope you get yours if you need it.
Leigh - I chop and freeze my chives and, oh my, they add so much color to winter foods! They're worth it for that alone. Of course, the fact that they come back year after year makes them all the more desirable in my book!
ReplyDeleteHey Mama Pea! Seems I'm late again checking in, but I have a good excuse... I was mowing our lawn all day yesterday... in the rain... determined to get'er done. :) Glad to hear it sounds like you got your garden in. I love hearing and seeing how your garden grows. You are my 'inspiration'. Your chives are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteLisa - And I'm late getting comments done! I need a slow-down and the summer hasn't even really picked-up speed yet!! On my walk through the garden this morning, I sure don't feel like an inspiration . . . so many things I would have liked to do differently but the past months of remodeling didn't leave me enough time for the garden planning I wanted/needed. The nice thing about the chive blossoms is that they stay blooming so very long. Love 'em!
DeleteSo true about chives - I haven't even used any this year yet LOL but I love having them in the garden :)
ReplyDeleteErin - Papa Pea keeps saying, "Those chives are so lush. We should be using more of them." (I'm tempted to give him a bowl of chopped chives for dinner some night.) I'm using as many as I can but sometimes we just have to be happy with looking at them!
