I'm happy to report that it's been raining most of the day today. When I woke up at a little before six a.m., I thought it was around 4:30 because it was so dark. Then when I looked at the clock and saw the time, I was totally confuzzed for a couple of seconds. It's been so long since we've had the dark, heavy weather that produces rain that I didn't recognize it for what it was.
This is looking out the window of my quilt room. Isn't it gorgeous? What's really nice is that I've spent most of the day in there playing with fabric, cutting it up and then sewing it back together. A totally divine way to spend a rainy Sunday.
The rain will help boatloads in quelling the forest fire danger which brings a sigh of relief to everyone in these here parts.
Even though I worked in the garden all day yesterday, I hesitated doing any more planting because the soil was like dust. The seeds and potatoes I do have planted have been doing absolutely nothing because of the lack of moisture. And I knew the berry patches were getting dangerously dry.
I took this picture hanging out the window in hubby's office upstairs in between periods of heavy rain this morning. Doesn't the soil look happy since it's not so dry and dusty? Now with this good drenching, I'll get out into the garden as soon as I can and go like gangbusters on the planting. Papa Pea mowed part of the lawn yesterday (in the broiling heat) and says he thinks it's grown another three inches (at least) today because of the rain.
Yepper, we are very, very happy to have had this day of rain. We sure needed it!
Ask and you shall receive......eventually. Glad your garden is getting a big gulp.
ReplyDeleteMama Pea ... Your garden is beautiful. Love the mixture of raised beds and in ground planting.
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a good rainy day- and a day to quilt. After getting 7 inches of rain in about 10 days we stopped getting rain and now we're also pretty dry. But I'm not about to let that stop me from getting back out into the garden tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteHave a grand rest of your Sunday.
Judy
Jane - Thanks, Jane. Now if there were just some way to talk Mother Nature into giving us frequent (but no floods, please) enough rains throughout the growing season . . . am I asking too much?
ReplyDeleteDFW - Thank you! It seems to work best for me. Some things do better in the raised beds and some things need the old-fashioned long row planting.
Judy - Knowing your work ethic, you will get tons done in the garden tomorrow! Wonder if it will be dry enough for me to get into mine?
Lovely! We are getting a bit of rain today too. I'm not happy about it because I was all set up with welding goggles to have a look at the solar eclipse. The clouds are totally obscuring my view. Humph!
ReplyDeleteYou have a beautiful garden! What a cozy way to spend a rainy day. I would like some rain down here!!
ReplyDeleteShannon
I'm so glad you got some rain. I wish we had been as lucky. It rained all of 10 minutes. I'm glad I went with seeds this year---but now that they did get 17 drops of rain, they'll start growing. And expect more. And of course, there's none in the forecast for the next week. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteYour garden looks terrific.....so very neat. I love that.
I'm already drooling over your garden!!! So glad you got some rain (finally!).... and So glad you've been able to spend some time in your quilt room.
ReplyDeletelooks so plush . I can see you in your quilting room, cutting fabric, happy as a little girl cutting out paper doll clothes--lol
ReplyDeleteOh my does your garden look nice & moist!! We're just about in drought-mode here already, and it isn't even June! There was rain North, South and East of us yesterday (yes, I'm a doppler radar addict) and not a stinking drop for us!!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you got that much needed rain! :) Your gardens look fabulous!
ReplyDeleteYour gardens are beautiful. Our neighbor's rain gauge said 2 1/2 inches for us. The pasture flooded. It did clear up just in time for us to watch the solar eclipse last night.
ReplyDeleteLove the "overview" pic of your lawn and garden. The dirt looks so yummy and crumbly!
ReplyDeleteCan I come up and play in your dirt?
Sparkless - I've heard of several people who were disappointed in the weather that fouled up their viewing of the eclipse. Not fair!
ReplyDeleteShannon - Welcome and thanks for commenting! Thank you for your nice words regarding our garden. I see you are from Illinois. Hubby and I were born and bred in northern Illinois and moved up here from there 39 years ago!
Sue - Yup, once the moistening of the seeds begins, we gotta keep it up. Gardening sure is a lot of trouble, isn't it? ;o}
Lisa - Yesterday felt so good . . . rain outside and quilting inside!
judy - I WAS a little girl cutting out paper dolls. I spent years playing with them and designing clothes for them.
CR - Doesn't that just frost ya when it rains all around you but you get nary a drop? How does that happen?
Stephanie - Thank you, ma'am. The rain was so much needed. We got about 6/10ths of an inch.
odiie - 2-1/2"!? That is one heckuva lot of rain all at once. Hope it didn't do any harm to your garden.
tami - Doesn't the soil always look so good when it's wet? You may come and play in our dirt but just remember to bring your long johns. You must not forget we've had frost in every since month of the year up here at one time or another! (Isn't that ridiculous??)
So glad you got rain! I hope you have plenty of seedlings peeking out soon!
ReplyDeleteErin - We're getting another day of rain (Tuesday) and there's more forecast for the rest of the week. We still need it so bring it on!
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of rain, too... especially at night. Such beautiful sounds and smells.
ReplyDeleteEmily Brisse - Welcome and thanks for commenting! After having a not-enough-snow winter and dry early spring, we're finally in a period of getting some adequate moisture. More forecast for tonight and tomorrow. Rain is good. Rain at night is wonderful for the garden as it soaks in and doesn't get burned off by the sun!
