She Knows Not Of What She Speaks

So I took two of those huge eggs that I thought might well be more double yolkers to use for our breakfast this morning.

(Nah, I said to myself. These big eggs can't all be double yolkers. But they feel so heavy, there's got to be more than a single yolk in there.)

Ooops. Do you see four yolks? Do you see three yolks? Nope, me neither. But both yolks were a good two inches across . . . not your average, run-of-the-mill egg.

Wonder if I'm wrong on all the rest of them, too? (Ah, the things that keep my mind occupied . . . )

  1. They still look really good. Wish you were cooking breakfast for me! Toast and coffee with that, please...

  2. Wow. You know anyone with an incubator? Those would make some big honk'n chicks!

Or some nice fried egg sandwiches. :)

  3. LOL...ah the humbleness of trying to outguess Mother Nature....

Part of the beauty of our lives, isn't it?

  4. What are you feeding those birds anyway?!

  5. 2 Tramps - We did have toast with them. Where were you??

dr momi - They do eat pretty well what with good organic feed and lots of kitchen scraps!

Sue - Bacon, bacon, bacon! Mmmm-good! Who doesn't like bacon? Being a dyed-in-the-wool carbo type I don't want as much meat as my hubby does. Many mornings I make him a sausage patty (which I did this morning) but none for me.

Carolyn Renee - We do have an incubator and have hatched out chicks that way. It would be interesting to do an experiment and see if the bigger eggs actually did hatch out bigger chicks. Makes sense to me, no? Okay, who's up for that research project? (Fried egg sandwiches are also good. ;o])

Akannie - If you just take time for that sort of thing, well my gosh, there's no end of wonders Ma Nature can show us!

    Jody - Steroids.

  6. My hen died from prolapse after laying the last BIG egg like that. I do miss our chickens and the eggs! Enjoy!

  7. Nancy - OMG, we've never had that happen. Now I'm worried. I think I'll go post a sign in the hen house, "Normal sized eggs ONLY!"

  8. Hey Mama Pea-
Laptop is working just well enough to leave a comment of two, so I thought I'd say hi. :) I was fooled yesterday with an egg just like that. Thought for sure I'd have double yolks for breakfast (yummy!). No such luck. Have a great New Years weekend!

  9. Just this past week or two, the local eggs that I got were larger than usual too. I wondered if the cold weather had anything to do with that (but I could not imagine why) or if the chickens were getting better or more feed since the owners found at least two people to buy eggs every week. Guess I'll never know. Me, I cannot eat eggs in the morning but I sure can for lunch or dinner. Save me a spot by the fire .... and make my AM drink tea, please.

  11. Patty - Good to hear from you! Sending wishes to you and your family and all the critters for a wonderful New Year of 2012!

Karen L. - Okay, this is getting weird! Bigger eggs everywhere??

    P.S. The tea will be hot and waiting! ;o}

Erin - No, no, not an inch of butter but I did put a good tablespoon in the pan! Remember, our bodies NEED fats to function properly, but it should be animal fats. Fat from dairy products or rendered fat or such.

  12. Ok, weirdness here. We've had a few 'extra large' eggs recently as well. They don't fit in the carton! We went through a stint this summer where one of the Rhodies was giving us double yolks regularly but now she has stopped. But someone is doing Jumbo!

  14. I wonder what would happen if I put a chicken or 2 in the back yard-free roaming I mean, heck the neighbors fat cat Garfield , might eat them. we had a rooster once when we lived down the road-it crowed all hours of the day. my neighbor a block over [ who could not see into my yard ] said " do you know some idiot has a rooster around her" I said " no,really"

  15. Judy - Another homesteader checks in with jumbo eggs! Very strange . . .

Sparkless - The eggs tasted really good . . . but just like usual . . . but bigger!

judy - You can get by with keeping a couple of hens in the back yard in most places, but it's those noisy old roosters that create the problems. What? Doesn't everyone enjoy the sound of a rooster crowing? Guess not.

  17. So what am I doing wrong? My chickens stopped laying as soon as I brought them out of the pasture and put them in the coop. I'm getting one or two "normal" sized eggs a day from 25 hens! Time for butchering? It's been almost six weeks now.

  18. Dmarie - We really, really appreciate the nutritious flavor of our hens' eggs! They taste sooo different than store bought.

odiie - Oh, no! I can sure sympathize though. Last year at this time we were in the same boatless . . . an eggless boat!

  19. They are beauties! I am wondering how your are keeping that nice dark gold yolk in this weather. Our eggs are getting pretty pale. Are you feeding them something special?

  20. gld - Hi, and thanks for commenting. I started to write a reply to your question about the color of our egg yolks, but I could see it was getting too long too fast so I decided to make it into a blog post. Hope to get it up yet today.
