Kissin' Cousins from California

Well, we're not all cousins . . . only three of the group qualify as that. But we're all family.

Part of hubby's side of the family is here visiting. This morning we all met at one of our favorite "special" places for a fantastic Sunday Brunch.

From left to right: B and K. K is hubby's brother's daughter. Their 5 year old daughter is in front. The blond next is hubby's sister's daughter, C. Then comes Chicken Mama, me and hubby. (I'm the one looking like a barrel in the white blouse that could double as a hatchin' jacket for a person 8 months pregnant. I am tossing that blouse immediately. But wait . . . it does make me look as if I actually have a bustline. Should I reconsider??) So K, C and Chicken Mama are the three cousins. B and I married into the clan.

After brunch, hubby and I headed home while Chicken Mama and the rest of the group went in the opposite direction to her little homestead for an afternoon of canoeing and fishing on the river. They've promised to bring fresh fish here for dinner tonight so I made some food to go with the fish.

If no fish arrives with the fishermen, we'll eat a lot of tossed salad, deviled eggs and buttered beets from the garden. No, if that should actually happen . . . that they return with sunburned noses but no fishes . . . someone will make an emergency run into the fish market in town for fish, and we won't go hungry. Or fishless.

  1. How fun! I am sure they will come through with the fish... but will it have a price tag dangling out of it's mouth? Canoeing and fishing sounds heavenly to me right now, glad you are having a good time with family near and have a wonderful dinner!

  2. I found it much more efficient to skip buying a license this year and just go directly to the fish market :)

    Have a great time!

(And keep the shirt, you look great)

  3. What are you talking about? You look great! That's a nice picture of you all. Did the fish arrive?

  4. Erin - Our weather has gone back to hot and humid this week and we're complaining like crazy and the California family is looking at us like we've gone 'round the bend. (There's a reason we live in this snowy, cold land!)

Jen - Maybe I should keep the shirt and lose the twenty pounds I've put on in the last year, eh? HOW did that happen??

Susan - Not only did the fish not arrive, but we didn't hear from the fishermen until 15 minutes before the local fish market closed! It was a very fast trip into town to PURCHASE the fresh fish for last night's dinner!

P.S. Thanks for the compliment. Of course, I think everyone else looks great. It's just me that needs a make-over. Unfortunately, I don't think there's any place up here in the northwoods that does that kind of work!

  5. Mama Pea - I am with you there. The only 'makeover' work done around here involves old pickup trucks, a beer cooler and hand tools.

  6. Susan - Ha! Our good neighbor to the east is a heavy equipment operator. Maybe he could help me!
(Many mornings when I have trouble getting out of bed, I tell my husband, "Call D and have him bring the crane over."

  7. I vote yes, keep the shirt! Glad you've had the chance to get out and enjoy yer kinfolks!

I just had one batch of summer visitors and am bracing for a visit from my brother in a couple weeks... but first I'm bracing for Hurricane Earl, which may or may not send damaging winds and potential power outages our way! Guess we won't put the roof on the new guinea fowl house just yet...

  8. It would be great fun to have hand caught fish to go with those home grown goodies. Fish is the one thing I'm not sure we could do on our own.

  9. MaineCelt - Yes! Do wait to put any new roofs on! Stay safe and enjoy your brother's visit to the hilt!

Leigh - Yeah, you'd have to go to farm raised fish and they certainly aren't as good for us, are they?
