Uh-Oh.

When hubby walked back by the smaller of our wood sheds full of wood yesterday, this is what he saw.

Kinda looks like there was a small explosion in there, doesn't it?

You can't see it from the angle of the picture, but the last two rows of wood are leaning out quite a bit at the top.

We think when we stacked the wood, the ground was frozen. Well, we know it was considering the time of year. Then as we've gotten into warmer weather, the frost came out of the ground, something moved or shifted and . . . oops. Wood fall down.

Methinks we're gonna have to devote a couple of hours to pulling out most of the last two tiers of wood and then restacking them.

That's okay. We were looking for something to fill our time these long, lazy days of early summer. (Gasp, gag, cough, *%$#*!)

  3. Hey, Stephanie - It could have been a lot worse. What if the very back wood had fallen forward and had a domino effect?? :o)

Hi, Holly - I'm betting it wouldn't happen again in many, many years.

  4. P.S. Stephanie - Thank you so very much for your kind words. I really enjoy writing the blog and get so much enjoyment (and knowledge and inspiration!) from other blogs. I think it's a good outlet for all of us, no?

  5. Wow! Be careful a bobcat doesn't come leaping out of it's winter hideaway! Or a feral child, lol!! Thanks for your well wishes today, I should be back posting tomorrow, will get a few teary farewell pics up on the blog and then hopefully a garden related harvest picture tomorrow night, you're right, I'll get into a groove very soon and will run this place like a tight ship! :)

  6. Hey, Erin-Crazy-Lady! More likely than a bobcat or feral child of the woods, it would be one of our demented red squirrels or a herd of mice. We find lots of nests from both of them as we work our way back through the stacks.

Thanks for the warning of the "farewell" pictures coming up. I'll go get a new box of kleenex to put by my desk. I just KNOW I'll need it.

  7. uh-oh is right! I'm hoping you encounter nothing more than a herd of mice (are they really called herds?) and not a feral child in there (that made me laugh out loud -- thanks, Erin, for that).
If it makes you feel better, at least you have wood TO restack -- we (the royal we, of course) still have to cut, split and stack. Sigh.

  8. Well, at least no one or no thing was standing there when it did that!

  9. Nothing worse than re-stacking, moving clearing and redoing blech! I'd like to say thats what happened to our wood pile but, its cause I stacked it wonky in the dark! I'm sure your so excited to have "something to do"! LOL

  10. Hey, Fiona - I don't know where Erin gets the words that come out of her mouth. She cracks me up regularly.

A "herd" of mice? How would I know? I just hope I never encounter a herd of them!

Now you take heed from Mama Pea, little girlie. You and your hubby get going on that wood stack asap. Dry, seasoned wood will give you so much more heat for your money!

Hi, Leigh - Wouldn't that have made you jump about a foot straight up if it had come tumbling out just as you walking by?!?

Hi, Katie - I think in the past I could have qualified as "Queen of the Wonky Stackers" myself. Before we had our wood sheds and were stacking wood outside between stakes, mine would always fall over . . . several times!

  11. Holy smokes! And it was all so NEAT. I am always in awe of anyone who can stack wood like that. Mine is rather...messy. I suppose restacking wood could take on a Zen feeling, if you could block out all of the other things you could/should be doing! If I lived closer, I'd come and help. Other people's chores are always so much more fun.

  12. Yikes! Maybe some bracing between the rows next year. It looks like 3 rows deep, is that about right? Glad no one was hurt.

  13. Hey, Susan - Thanks for the offer of help . . . even if! I truly don't mind stacking wood. It's always afforded a great time to "talk" if you have a friend to do it with. (And can put those other 73 things you should be doing out of your mind!) :o)

  14. Hi, Conny - The wood shed is 16 ft. deep but I'm hoping we don't have to pull down more than the front two tiers of wood . . . maybe three at the most. I hope. We haven't tackled it yet. I think we're both hoping it will go away. Or maybe that feral child Erin talks about will clean up his mess some night by the light of the moon. ;o)

  15. I could only wish my wood pile looked that nice! We're a bit of a disaster at the moment. I hope clean up went quickly.

    Great blog, btw. :)

  16. Hey, Ashley - Welcome and thanks for commenting! (Upside for me is that I now have found your blog and will be following.)

We FINALLY got the wood pulled out and restacked just last night. (What the heck were we waiting for??) And, of course, it didn't take that long at all to do compared to the angst and putting it off, off, off that we had done. Now if it just stays upright, we'll be happy. :o)
