Our Daily Visitor

Our Pileated Woodpecker has been a daily visitor for weeks now. I wanted to get a couple of shots today that would give you an idea of what a big bird she is.

Here's a little Nuthatch on the bag of suet.

Try as I might, I couldn't catch Mrs. Pileated on the suet for a better comparison. This was the best I could do. Still wonder if she has a mate that we haven't seen.

That's a pretty good comparison with the nuthatch. How fortunate that Mrs. Pileated visits your suet every day! Wouldn't it be cool if she has a mate somewhere and eventually brings little ones to your backyard too?

How about Evening Grosbeaks? Are you seeing any of those at your feeders this winter?

Hi, Ruthie - Haven't seen a single Evening Grosbeak yet this winter. How 'bout you?

I saw bunches of Evening Grosbeaks last February when Lynne and I were up at the Sax-Zim birding festival. It was so cool. My mom remembers MANY years ago there were some Evening Grosbeaks at our birdfeeder in SE MN, but they never get down this far anymore. I've read that their numbers are really declining.

Right after I answered your question about Evening Grosbeaks yesterday, Ruthie, I looked out my window and saw a whole flock of Pine Grosbeaks! First time we've seen them this winter. We usually see both the Pine and Evening Grosbeaks around the same time so I'm keeping my eyes peeled now.
