Hot, hot, hot. Too hot for us northern people.
Week before last, we were sure fall had arrived. The colors started to turn, the temperature began dropping long about 5 p.m. each day bringing that feeling of autumn to the air, and our lawn was starting to collect leaves drifting down from the trees.
Then last week temperatures nearly caused whiplash to those of us ready for sweatshirt weather. They soared right up to the hottest of this summer season. Well, perhaps the apples, sunflowers and pumpkins will have a chance to reach their full potential yet.
As for humans, we've had a couple of sleepless nights. Our body thermostats just don't adjust easily to 80-some percent humidity with sweat dripping off our noses.
The lack of rain, for yet another period, coupled with the high temperatures has caused forest fire danger in the surrounding area to be listed as way too high for comfort. Not much to do but put on our coolest (while remaining decent) clothing and keep our fingers crossed for mid-week when promised rain arrives along with lower temperatures.
Here's a lovely, wild bouquet a sweet nine-year old girl gave me when she came in yesterday from a walk on our property. I was touched. And impressed. The rugged beauty of nature. And the thoughtfulness of a child.

Right now we are feeling that shift to fall, with unusual summer rainfall and days of gray. But I know that we, too, could soar back into uncomfortably hot temps in September, although I sure hope we don't. Seems like the fall rains have been coming later and later here; a 'typical' (ha!) fall arrival would be welcomed for fire suppression and snowpack.
Michelle - I sometimes think we shouldn't expect any season of the year to be "typical" or "as usual" any more. Whether one believes in global warming or not, the weather all across the world has been unreliable and even scary. So many more hurricanes, cyclones, tornadoes, earthquakes, heavy rainfalls, floods, etc. We are in a period of unstable weather!
We have a couple of days of heat as well, but absolutely did not lack rain this past month. Keep cool!! -Jenn
We are melting here also. The overnight temp did not get below 20C (69F)Windows and doors are all wide open to get in this relatively cooler air, before the sun rises and the temperature soars to the 30C+ (86+) plus brutal humidity that is forecast. It reached 33C ((91F)yesterday. No hiding inside today, there are beans and blackberries to pick. I'll just suck it up, and do it. My sunflowers are loving it, and this should bump my watermelons along to ripeness! Hang in there...
We were enjoying autumn temps and great sleeping weather for a week or more and now we are back up to 90/70 and sweating all night.
Jenn - Heat broke last night with a heavy wind and rain storm. Very cool and lovely today. Hope it stays this way all fall!
Rosalea - Wow, you've got it even warmer than we do. And you're so right about having to go out into the garden when the veggies/fruits are ready and need to be harvested. Our house stays a bit cooler than the outside temp, but when one is canning . . . well, it's still uncomfortable! :o)
SmartAlex - Isn't it remarkable how the hear does affect your sleep? Not fun at all!
