I've talked about the medium-sized artificial (yes, even though I thought I'd never go there) Christmas tree we purchased a few years ago. It has lights permanently attached so Papa Pea and I no longer suffer those frustrating periods every year of trying to "help" each other string the lights on a tree.
We're having a little bit of trouble with the lights this year.

I hear you! We had one of those 1 year and then yes it kind of fizzled out luckily we had bought it used so we weren't adverse to throwing it in the trash.. We did buy a new 1 but without the lights outlet lights. We use LED lights which never burn out and are pretty easy to use. Sometimes simple is better!
Nancy - At this point, simple seems to be forgetting the tree altogether! (But I'll get over it.) ;o)
I've tentatively suggested an artificial tree a few times, but Rick is adamantly against one. Should I ever persuade him, I'll steer away from the pre-installed lights!
Michelle - Thinking of the HUGE tree you put up every year, I can't quite imagine the task it is to string lights on it!! You're a tougher woman than I am. ;o)
Lights are definitely the most frustrating part of a Christmas tree; both the putting up and the taking down! I've been trying to downsize the tree accordingly to make it easier to put up and take down. I may try a root-balled evergreen this year, so I can replant it when Christmas is over.
Leigh - Yay for trying a root-balled tree. It wouldn't even have to be a typical Christmas tree shaped plant. You could decorate lots of different types of shrubs, trees or plants. Great idea!
Been out perusing the "back forty" for a suitable specimen. Thinking of pruning some little trees in early summer, for future years...the internet is an invaluable resource!
Oh dear, that doesn't look good. I've looked at pre-lit trees for years. The tree size/shape I prefer seems to come only with non-LED white lights - boring and too bright. Another hesitation - how long does the wiring hold up on pre-lit trees with all the fluffing and branch tweaking it takes to make them look good? So I continue with putting lights on myself. Yes, DH & I putting lights on it together... frustrating is a good word. At least it's fit for print :-O
Speaking of which, I better box up the fall decorations and get up to the attic and bring the next set down before it gets cold up there again.
Rosalea - Pruning so you can raise your own little stand of Christmas trees is a really wise idea! So many times you see two (or three!) growing close together that would yield one perfect tree if pruned and given the chance. It will be your own Christmas tree farm!
JustGail - Yep, I guess it's a toss-up between the chance that the pre-lit ones will go out on you (like ours did) or suffering (too strong a word?) through putting on the lights yourself each year. I am so happy I already have all the fall decorations down and packed away for another year and the Christmas ones are now up. Wah-hoo! Hope you get yours done soon, too.
