Has the start of a new year ever been greeted with more hope and heartfelt wishes for it to be better than the one just past? I think not. Or perhaps some of us are just girding our loins (what a mental picture) and preparing the best we can for whatever awaits in the coming months. I am so very grateful for where we live, our community, the little oasis we've managed to build around ourselves and our remaining brain power that enables us to make wise decisions that will keep us safe, sane, healthy and happy as we go into this new year. I wish the same for all of you.
This is the front of a nifty little book my daughter gave me for Christmas. Upon unwrapping it I thought, "Well, there are probably good tips in here, basic mechanics of sewing machines I should know. Maybe." Then it slowly dawned on me.
You see, a couple of months ago, she, being our resident computer guru, had asked me for my password to some site or another I was having trouble accessing. My password to that particular site? Hmmm. Wait, I have it somewhere. Some place. Now where did I mark that down?
It's been my practice to enter my different passwords (as least I'm meticulous about using all different passwords) either on the inside of particular folders or on index cards held together with a big paper clip and tossed in a small box on my desk top. Wise daughter suggested I organize all my passwords in one spot.
Ta-dah! Here's the secret, hidey place in which to do just that. Slipped in with the other "important" books and pamphlets on my desk, not only will all my passwords be in one handy-dandy spot which will be easily accessible, but a burglar looking for all my highly sensitive material (yeah, right) will never be tempted to steal Sewing Machines - Home Guide Series.

Now that is a very clever gift. I need one for my parents.
Oh, that is a good idea! I, too, am guilty of writing down passwords, etc. in a little booklet that isn't particularly hidden in a secure spot! At work, I even have it taped to my laptop! (you never know when someone may need to use your computer at work). If someone is looking for top secret files or bank accounts filled with money, they won't find them on my teacher computer! Ha ha. I hope you are having a nice first day of a brand new year! -Jenn
tpals - In case you want to follow up on this for your parents, as far as I can tell from the back of the book it's from the site imagerion.com.
Jenn - You HAVE top secret files and bank accounts filled with money?? Wow. We are having a very nice, relaxing day today. Husband is reading a book he got from the library on livestock guardian animals and I'm knitting. Ohhhhhmmmmm! ;o)
That IS a clever idea! Until I read your comment, I thought Chicken Mama created it by merging new guts with an old cover, and I was about to ask if she takes orders. Now I'll trot off to look at that website. After our recent trials, the first day of 2021 is starting out great (except for the pouting teen). I guess if it all goes downhill from here, at least we had one good day!
Michelle - I've been thinking about your situation a lot and wondering how in the world you've been able to provide enough water for all your animals? Do you have the equipment for hauling it from a nearby source?
What's the pouting teen pouting about? What terrible, awful, bad thing have his parents done to him to create his disposition? Or is the problem simply because he's still in those terrible teen years some kids suffer through?
We have a 50-gallon food-grade barrel that we fill and take with us for horse-camping, so we've used that and two five-gallon jugs of the neighbor's to get water from their hose, plus some gallon jugs for the house. Everything was fixed yesterday, though, so we are back in the land of those privileged to have running water at the touch of a handle. As for the pouting teen, his parents are backing up the 1/1/21 start of quarantine as requested by his college before students return to campus. It's going to be a looooong nine days....
How clever is that! What a thoughtful daughter.
Our day included tons of rain, then a pale rainbow and a lovely sunset. So, a hopeful start. Fingers crossed!
Oh my gosh that is a clever idea. When Dad passed, we had to recycle his computer. It was password protected and none of us had the password. Great way to hide them too.
Great gift Little Pea! My mother used to wrap wads of cash wrapped up like meat in the freezer thinking no burglar would steal frozen meat. When she died we found almost $20,000 stashed in her freezers.
Oh that's cute! I actually saw something like that recently but it was more like a personal phone book that was printed out and I thought that is not a good idea, unless we kept it in the safe. Wow $20,000 in the freezers!
Granny Sue - We have no rain, no snow. Just more gray, cloudiness. Dreary. Damp. Need I say more?
Kristina - That must have lead to a bit of frustration . . . with your dad's computer. So many things we as computer users don't think of.
Cockeyed Jo - Oh. my. gosh! Good thing you went through the freezers carefully. However, these days, thieves would probably steal the food in freezers!
Nancy - If one were to feel paranoid these days (and some times it's hard not to!), a safe would be the only place for a lot of things!
We great minds think alike. Yesterday I put all our passwords into a small book. There were tons of them. I like your book better because it’s alphabetical. I went to the site you mentioned but it’s all about images no books like yours. 😕
Happy new year!
Katie C. (and tpals) - Katie, you're right about that info I gave as to where to find the password book. Nuthin' pertinent there. Next time my daughter pops in, I'll get the correct info from her as to where she got mine.
FOR ANYONE INTERESTED - My password book was purchased from Amazon. On their site type in "password book sewing machine" and it should pop up. If you want to look at other covers, they have a gazillion of them!
That is the smartest thing ever! What a great gift!!!! Happy New Year!
Same to you, Val!
Thank you! I found it and ordered it.
This will work way better than my lists because it’s alphabetical. I never realized I had so many passwords until I tried to collect them all in one spot. Thank your daughter for me. Smart cookie!
Katie C. - Oh, good! I still haven't sat down and entered my passwords yet, but will do so soon and I'm sure I, too, will be surprised at how many I have.
My daughter said she thinks I completely gave away the whole idea of the secret password book by doing this post, but I won't enter really sensitive info (like pertaining to finances and such) in my clever little book. And if anybody should riffle through the book and find my password to Connecting Threads, let them have at it! ;o)
Well, I did have the same thought as your daughter, but since there are lots of different cover options, and one could keep one's 'sewing book' in a sewing machine case, for instance, I still think it's a good – and relatively secure – idea.
