Dumbbell of the Year Award

I made attempted to make an ice cream cake roll as a special dessert for dinner one night this last week.  Papa Pea walked through the kitchen as I was mixing the batter for the chocolate cake part, and I asked if I should put mint ice cream or chocolate ice cream in the cake roll.

"Oh, chocolate!  Chocolate, chocolate, CHOCOLATE!" he replied.

I had a taste for the mint (sigh) but because I had asked (my first mistake) and wanted to please him (grumble, grumble), I used the chocolate.

I apparently was totally lacking brain function in that I didn't stop to think for one second that in using the chocolate ice cream with the chocolate cake, the whole visual of the spiral in the roll of ice cream and cake would be lost.

Not only did the roll turn out difficult and ugly . . .

. . . but the slice of it on the plate looked exactly like a round piece of meatloaf.  Yuck.

(Gosh [she said shaking her head], and the cake rolls looked so attractive when they made them on The Great British Baking Show.)

And how did it taste? Wonderful? Did he enjoy it ? Did you?

I do understand your frustration and I do understand the concept of visual presentation.

But as my Mama used to say “think about how it looks in your stomach”. Perhaps a bit bold but if it was a joy to eat then I see no harm no foul.

Stop kicking yourself!

Next time use fudge swirl ice cream. Although visually not striking, bet it was yummy!

LOL! Love this post.
I do the same thing MP. Ask for his opinion...HaHaHa. You'd think as long as we've been married that we would learn NOT to. Kuddos to you for trying you put a spin on the humble cake and ice cream. That's what I would have done - slice of cake and SPLAT of ice cream. Take it or leave it.
Thanks for the laugh.

OMG...I just noticed your plate. That's the same dinnerware that my Grandma had. Always loved that set. I wonder if they still make it. Flip it over and let me know if there's any info on the back. I would love to search and see if I can get my mitts on any.

Goatldi - Confession: It tasted wonderful. :o) It's long gone. Neither one of us could stay away from it. I sure will remember which flavor/color of ice cream to use next time I make it though!

Cockeyed Jo - I never thought of a chocolate swirl ice cream. That would please the chocolate-lover around here and also look good!

Tami - Hubby suggested I put a blob of vanilla ice cream on top of each slice to cover the "meatloaf" look, but I thought that would be calorie over-kill!

My dishes! Have had these since about a year after we were married. Used every day and a lot of people remember them as ones their mothers/grandmothers had. They're a very old design . . . Franciscan Ware, Apple motif and are still made. I just bought four "used" dinner plates on eBay in perfect condition because a couple of mine did have chips underneath the rims. There are a lot of the pieces available there. When my mom and dad visited, Dad used to say they drove him nuts because he kept trying to "eat" the apples off the plate thinking he had missed some food. ;o)

At least it was tasty 😋

I got my guy Netflix for Christmas and have been working my way through all the “Great British Baking Show” episodes that I missed. I’m on the last season. Waaah!

Katie C. - My daughter liked The Great British Baking Show so much that she purchased the first five seasons and that's what I've been watching. Who knew one could get so hooked on a baking show??! And, yes, even watching them for a second time is entertaining. There's so much in each episode that might be missed the first time through.

Well like Julia Child sad never apologize for your food! You both enjoyed it and ate it all so that's all that matters . I can see where the fudge swirl would work well to Are you could even do something like mint chocolate chip haha And fake him out,

Darn, now I really want some chocolate cake with mint ice cream.

Are you getting weather today? We are expecting freezing rain.

I dunno. Looks okay to me!

I am much too lazy to go to all that work; I'd be the "plop a scoop of IC on the cake" person!

As for dishes, another great place to find pieces is https://www.replacements.com. They even have pieces for the 'grocery store china' set that my DH's grandma collected for him when he was just a boy! They price the pieces according to (well described) condition.

Nancy - The mint I had and was going to use was white with small chocolate chips in it so I really should have gone with it. He would have gotten his chocolate in the cake and bits in the ice cream!

tpals - We had snow this morning, but not more than a covering. The weird thing is that the temp has been climbing all day. It's at 30° now and hubby said it was misting (RAIN!) when he went out to close up the poultry. Oh, what a mess this could be by morning!

Leigh - You been hungry for meatloaf?? ;o)

Michelle - That replacements.com place sounds like I should check it out! Thanks.

wyomingheart - Must admit that's what our tummies saw (felt?), too! It truly was not very attractive, but it did taste very good. ;o)

Well, thankfully the most important thing is how it tasted!!

Retired Knitter - You're right! The proof is in the pudding, as they say. :o)
