This Is What Our April 1st Looks Like

Here's my second installment of how a portion of the garden looks on the first of each month.  I'm going to try to take a picture of the same area on the first of each month to give you an idea of how our climate changes.  I plan on doing this through the end of this coming gardening season.

First, a picture of the view last month on March 1st:

Not much to see other than the heavy blanket of white snow.

And here we are one month later.  Not exactly ready for planting, but we're making progress toward that end.  Although the snow continues to melt whenever we have some sunshine during the day, I'm not hopeful as to how much will melt this week because our temperatures are forecast to be back in the basement.  Mother Nature's basement, that is, as the outside temp isn't going to get out of the 20s!  Brrrr.

I was checking my notes from last April and it seems we were having warmer temperatures then, and I was even able to get out into the garden by the middle of the month to uncover the rhubarb, comfrey, chives, clean up the peppermint bed and do some weeding of the first healthy green weeds starting to pop up.  Somehow, I'm thinking that won't happen this year.  But you never know.

I do know we had one heckuva snowstorm on April 1st a few years back.

Friends of ours were gone at the time and we were keeping an eye on their place.  This is what their deck and entry door looked like the morning of April 1st.  Quite an April Fool's Day joke, eh?  They were due home the next day (they did make it) so we shoveled and shoveled so they would be able to get in their house.

Up here in the north woods April tends to be a very fickle month.  Here's hoping my May 1st picture looks quite a bit different than this current one!

Well, I'd say, you have to expect snow in spring, in your 'neck of the woods'!!! ,-)

Love the garden photo, on the 2st of each month. Keep up the good work. :-))))

Oh dear. More poor man's fertilizer. Our weather is fickle year round. It's been super crazy lately.

We woke up to snow this morning, so I'm going back to bed - see you in June...

wisps of words - Don't worry about proof reading. I do it most of the time and still make mistakes!

You were half right anyway . . . I didn't get this posted until the 2nd!! Ah, yes, a day late and a dollar short! ;o)

Jenn - Yes, perverse as it may be, I do feel better knowing your rhubarb isn't up yet. :o]

Kristina - "Our weather is fickle year round." That's really laying it on the line! And hasn't that been true the last couple of years??

Mama Pea said...

Susan - The way your winter has been going, good luck waking up to no snow in June. (Ooops, maybe I shouldn't have said that!)

Here's hoping!!! I like that you put March's photo in too, I hope you continue to do that all season!! Do you do anything to your soil annually Mama Pea?

Mama Pea said...

Rain - Yep, we till compost into all the planting areas each fall. And certain areas get a dressing of compost (around bushes and trees) or peat moss (blueberry and haskap bushes) in the spring.

You do the compost tilling in the fall so that it's all ready for spring? That's pretty smart. Thanks for that information! I hope one day we'll have some fruit bushes to compost in the spring too :)

Are you snowing now? We are and supposed to go through the night still. 6-9" is the current estimate.

Most of our snow is gone but those nasty, frigid temps are still hanging about. This morning was -18! Ridiculous. I love that you are documenting each month's progress - that is such a great idea.

Expecting snow in NE Indiana tomorrow. Been raining most of the day today. Inclement weather of some sort is expected, however, since I'm on vacation this week. It's just the way it works.

Love the garden pic idea! I may have to glomb onto that one!

Athanasia - We had very light, lazy snow flakes on and off all day today but nothing ended up showing on the ground. Temp is cold and we worked outside all day. Boy, did that take the stuffings out of me!!

Mama Pea said...

MrsDM - Yep, can't seem to get rid of the cold temps here either. These first couple of months of documentation (the pictures) sure won't be very interesting to see, but I'm gonna love to see things growing and changing come June, July and August!

Mama Pea said...

Mark - Well, you KNOW you brought on your nasty weather by taking a week's vacation, don't you? ;o)

The snow we were supposed to get over the weekend all went south of us so maybe that's what you're getting now. (Sorry 'bout that.)

Please do take the garden pic idea and run with it. I did it once before a few years ago and it was truly fun to see. It would be great to see the pictures of your garden through the months!
