The Kitchen Tour

On her post of Friday, March 9th, a new favorite blogger of mine,
wisps of words, took us on a tour of her kitchen.  She asked if we readers would do the same by taking pictures of our kitchens to post on our blogs.

So here goes.  I grabbed my camera and started shooting with the sun streaming in through the south facing windows which proved to be not the best lighting for my pictures . . . as you will readily see.

Here I'm standing in the doorway of what we call our entry room.  Before we started adding on to our little hacienda here, it was the door that went directly outside.  The wood stove on the left is situated between the kitchen, a small hallway and our bedroom.

Without moving but turning to the right, you see down the kitchen in that direction.

Looking directly across the room from the same spot, you see our kitchen table and the south facing windows.

Walking ahead and getting closer to the table, I start to turn right past the back side of the work island in the middle of the kitchen.  You can see just a corner of it on the right.

Now you see the refrigerator and more of the back side of the island.  To the left of the refridge is the door going into our living room.  That door is most often open but has proven to be handy to shut out noise from either room.

As we keep veering right, you see the stove past the refrigerator and then the sink.

Directly across from the island is the counter area past the sink.  The windows you see on the right look out on our unheated, enclosed porch.  When we remodeled, I wanted to take out the windows and build in a floor-to-ceiling storage unit.  I was out-voted and the windows stayed.  I still don't like looking out onto the porch though.

Moving down the "work" side of the center island.

Now we're almost back where we started.  The doorway past the two windows is where I was standing to begin.  The door at the far end of the little hallway leads into our bedroom.

When you look at wisps of words' lovely kitchen, you'll see it looks "magazine ready" which mine does not.  I didn't take the time to tidy up before taking the pictures.  As they say, "What you see is what you get!"

It's a comfortable size which I appreciate since the space, before we started our remodeling and adding on, used to be both kitchen AND living room.  My kitchen has turned out to be very convenient for me, and I love it.

Now how about a tour of YOUR kitchen?

Ohhhh mercy!!!! You say the sweetest things!!!

And what a marvelous photo tour you gave us! You start at one point... Tell us how you are moving... Come full circle. Great!

I did not, not, not do that!!!! And your way is so much better!!!!!

I was mainly picturing how I like to keep my counters clear. Which I really do like. You can't cook with clear counters but I love to clear 'em up, after.

No, I did not make my kitchen "magazine ready". LOLLLLL... It had just been cleaned and I took advantage of that.

Thank you so much for showing us your warm and homey kitchen. And for showing us, in such a neat and easy to follow way!!!!!

Hugssssssss

wisps of words - Looking at my pictures, I kept thinking, "Oh, look at all that clutter. Clutter, clutter, clutter!" But it was the middle of the day and things were happening. I really do clean up to make things neat and tidy each night before bed.

It was a fun post to do. Thanks for your suggestion. I hope some others do it, too. (I love peeking into other homes! Hee-hee.)

I love your kitchen, but would have voted with you for floor-to-ceiling storage rather than indoor-facing windows. And since my counters are FAR more cluttered than yours, you won't likely be seeing me do this!

Mama Pea,
I love your kitchen, it's setup to work perfectly for you when cooking. I couldn't help but notice your stove is next to your refrigerator, so is mine! Would love to show pics of my kitchen but need to wait until I move the rest of the kitchen inside the house. Half of my kitchen is sitting on my back porch. Maybe next time!

Sending hugs and love to you both,
Sandy

Beautiful kitchen! I could post a picture of my kitchen but it would only take one photo to see the entire thing since it is tiny. We only have one window in our kitchen and the lighting is really bad so every picture I take in there everything looks yellow when in fact the walls are more a cream color. Maybe I'll post a picture tomorrow after I make sure there is enough light.

Mama Pea said...

Sparkless - I'd love to see your kitchen. "Tiny" can be efficient, too!

Michelle - Thanks for siding with me re the windows! I have to admit they do provide light to that area of the kitchen. And even though I'm looking through them and through the porch windows, it's nice to be able to see anyone walking/driving through the yard beyond. Also, I can see anyone walking onto the enclosed porch which wouldn't be possible if the windows weren't there. Am I rationalizing? Yep. :o] I'd still love to see your kitchen lay-out. In a working kitchen, the counters are always full!

Sandy - Thank you! When designing the kitchen, I spent a lot of time making sure it would be efficient for me. It doesn't show in the picture, but there is a 12" counter and cabinet between the refridge and stove. That was all I could fit in the space. I had to laugh at you saying half of your kitchen is still sitting on your back porch. Maybe leave it there until fall. You could call it your "summer kitchen!" Hugs back attcha!

Mama Pea, your kitchen is so cozy looking. I love the Fresh Eggs sign! :) My kitchen is about the size of your table lol...it's so tiny. I love that wood stove, thanks for the tour!!! :)

'Beautiful kitchen and what a great way to get ideas for my own kitchen! My kitchen is just about the same as it was 30 years ago ;-) We are planning and budgeting a total remake with new floors, counters and storage. I want a no-nonsense, cast iron farm sink with drain sides. (Might have to find one at a salvage yard and refurbish it.) I'm keeping "The Queen"; she's the decades old and beloved gas-wood combo cookstove. And she still works fantastic! I love the layout of my kitchen as is; she just needs a little bit of "lipstick"!-M

Rain - "Cozy" is a good word in my vocabulary (Hygge, hygge!) and I feel complimented. Thank you!

Susan - Awww, gorrrsh!! Hugs to you, my friend. And thank you.

M - Oh, how I would LOVE to have one of those old fashioned sinks with the drain board on either side!! Here's hoping you can find one in good shape.

You know I think your gas-wood combination cookstove cannot be beat. There's hardly a week that goes by that I don't think of having one like that!

Love your kitchen Mama Pea!! So lovely with much natural light, its cozy! I am a lover of all things wood and your cupboards are perfect!!

Mama Pea said...

MrsDM - Thanks for the compliment on the cupboards. They used to be all white, prefab doors and all, but I hated them 'cause I could not keep them clean! We took off the doors, replace them with the knotty pine ones and I painted what was left of the old cabinets yellow. And I love 'em!!

Great space! I also have yellow walls, nice and cheery. I'd got for windows too, since I love looking out... and wish mine was that big! :)

I'll do a kitchen tour soon!

Lots of natural light. You have a beautiful and functional kitchen. I enjoy the tour!!!

Mama Pea said...

Nancy - I love my yellow walls, too. I need light and bright inside the home. Hope you do post a kitchen tour soon. Would love to see it!

DDD - Thanks so much! I'm in the kitchen prepping three meals a day so having it attractive and functional is important to me. I know we'd all design our kitchens differently, to our own styles and tastes, but I'm very happy with mine.

Hi, I have just come over from wisps of words blog. I am Elaine, of Tales from Parsonage Cottage, my kitchen is featured over there, too.
I can honestly say that I could be very happy indeed in your kitchen. Practical, full of personality plus it feels cosy because of the wood, which I really like. Thank you for the tour. It has been lovely meeting you!

Mama Pea said...

Hi, Elaine! And welcome. Yes, wisps of words blog has brought us (and our kitchens!) together. I took your kitchen tour this morning and will go over there and leave a comment now.

Thank you for your kind words.

With the south-facing windows and yellow walls, this must be a cheery room to enter in the morning.

Phil - It is very bright (on sunny days!) but not until about 10 a.m. We have dense woods on the east of us and we've finally made the decision to take down the really tall trees (hate to take down any trees!) because they do cast too much shade on our garden areas in the morning. It will also enable us to have more of the morning light shining in those south windows.

Zaa - Welcome and I LOVE that you stopped by and left a comment! The knotty pine seems to add a warmth to the kitchen which is appreciated about 8 months of the year up here in northern Minnesota! Plus, (hee-hee) it doesn't show the dirt nearly as much as the all-white cabinets did! Stop by again some time . . .
