Even though we're nearing the end of February, we're finally starting to experience some nice snowfalls.
We had snow last Sunday night into Monday, but it was hard to tell how many inches fell as there was much wind and drifting. We're guessing somewhere between 8" and 12". (Papa Pea immediately declared the house felt much warmer with the snow banked up around it!)
A couple more inches have fallen kinda helter-skelter since then. And now the forecast is for heavy snow tonight into tomorrow morning. A little respite and then more heavy snow Saturday night into Sunday.
Yippee-skippee, I say! Even though our outdoor fun snow activities kinda went by the wayside because of someone's swan dive off the ladder, we are both snow-lovers and delight when winter time gives us ample amounts of the white stuff.
Of course, being old (not), retired (we are??) codgers (ahem), we don't have to get out and drive snow-covered, hazardous roads every day as some of you do. For that you have my sincere sympathies, and I will try to refrain from waxing poetically (as if I could) about snuggling down in front of an open fire with a second cup of java on such mornings.
When we have a light snow year, among other things like the frost going down too deeply into the ground because of not enough insulation from the cold, there's always the threat of spring forest fires because of lack of moisture. So we're looking forward to any snow we may get from now until the temperatures start creeping upward and spring looks like it really will arrive once more.

Yay for you then! We got two inches last night, both beautiful AND quickly melting so the best kind. ;-)
Yes, hooray for you, with snow.
Here we have snow too, in upper NE. Yesterday was melting warm, and today, is cold/snow. Confusing weather. ,-)
So happy for you though!
Michelle - If you can get that kind of snow without any ice in between, it can be loverly!
wisps of words - Yep, it's that time of year when it's hard to know what to expect. We have lovely, bright sunshine today which makes it hard to believe big snow is coming tonight.
We got a bit this morning here too.
Kristina - Your area must be getting close to being too warm for much more snow?
Mama Pea,
Retired...yes, you are! Old.....no,your NOT! That is really something how packed snow will insulate your house in the winter making it feel warmer inside.
I say this winter both you, and Papa Pea need to play it safe, and play inside instead of outside. At least until Papa Pea is totally healed.
Stay warm!!
Sending hugs and love,
Sandy
Hi Mama Pea :) I love the view of your home from outside, it looks so cozy! We should be getting some more snow this week too after all that rain! We're very lucky we're not in an area where forest fires are a threat. It's so humid in this valley, which as you know, I like too! :)
Hi Mama Pea!! Glad you're loving it and hope you can keep as long as it suits you. Being one of those folks still doing the day job thing with a 40 mile one way commute, I'm really hoping we in NE Indiana are done with copious amounts of the white stuff. I will, however, somewhat grudgingly admit it's too early for spring. Give me 30 degrees for another month and I won't whine... Too much... At least not very often... Or at least not for too long... (Hey, everyone needs a hobby!)
I would much rather have snow (and lots of it) than what we've had most of this weird winter - ice! I find snow soothing and cosy. Until I have to drive in it. I hope you get a good pile of that 'free fertilizer'!
Sandy - I'm so happy to report my dear husband is doing everything as usual and feeling fine. He plowed snow with the truck for a straight 2 hours this morning and then used the snow blower to open up paths for about 45 minutes. BUT we are being very careful in EVERYTHING we do, I can assure you!
Rain - Ugh, I can feel myself starting to wilt just thinking about the humidity you get (and love)! But rain this time of year in our "colder" climates is not nice. Hope your moisture comes in the form of snow!
Mark - Don't blame you a bit for wanting clear roads for your 40 mile one way drive! Ugh. Nuthin' like slippery roads to produce a little tension in your day. Wishing you clear sailing from now 'til spring!
Susan - Better to drive on snow than ice!
The path I shoveled this morning from our deck walkway down to the bird feeder in the yard was slick ice underneath the snow. How does that happen?
Hi Mama Pea, I have been following your blog off and on for many years. With our weather in Kentucky keeping us inside, I have been going through and rereading your posts. I love getting a glimpse into your world and learning from you. One thing I would love but have not seen is more about your root cellar. Do you have a separate area for this or is it in your basement? Thank you.
Mama Pea that first photo looks incredibly cozy and inviting! How it must look when dusk is starting. Picture perfect. We are in the middle of a mild snap. It can keep snapping for what its worth! :) I hope you and Papa Pea are keeping well.
Lisa French - Thank you so much for commenting with such nice words!
Our root cellar was dug under a small room addition we put on the house as we were finishing it. (I don't think the house is really "finished" yet!) Every now and then I think about blogging about the root cellar but my dear husband says "No, not yet, there are still things I want to do to finish it." True, it's not finished but has been serving us well for several years already!
MrsDM - Such nice things you say! Thank you.
There are cases of the bad flu all around us, but we're staying fit as fiddles. Papa Pea is totally recovered from his body bruises and battering from his fall and back to doing everything he's always done. Whew! Hope you are staying healthy and hardy also.
