Now that the weather (very damp, wet [either rain or snow] and nasty outside) has brought an abrupt halt to all but daily outside chores, I'm finding time to spend in my quilt room.
And I'm not sure it's a good thing. I don't want to do anything else! Who cares about washing, eating, sleeping? I'm definitely into the swing of things feeding my creative side, and that's all I want to do!
Well, maybe my life isn't quite that lopsided, but I sure can lose myself in there only to be roused by an occasional plea from my husband such as, "Are we going to have any dinner tonight?"
More news and pictures about all that later.

One of the (much appreciated) readers of my blog asked a question about my purple carrots in the comment section of my last blog post. She was wondering if they kept their purple color after being cooked.
I made some as a veggie side dish for our noon meal today.
Some three and a half hours later, my hands are still stained from prepping the carrots. And, yes, they definitely do keep their color after being cooked. When I served them (buttered, salt and peppered) on the plates today, they looked for all the world like beets. I'm sure no one would see them and say they were anything else.

Now back to my quilt room. See ya later.

Mama Pea,
I read some where if you put olive oil all over your hands before peeling and chopping beets the red color won't remain on your hands for days. I wonder if that would work with your carrot prep before cooking.
Perfect weather to get lost in a quilt/craft room.
Hugs and love,
Sandy
They DO look like beets! Were they good?
So when you say you've been BAD, you mean bad as in GOOD right? ;) I'm so happy you're quilting! We all have to find our happy spot that keeps us from making dinner on time lol...wow, those carrots really do stain! Whenever I work with beets, I always wear gloves otherwise, I have purple hands for a week!
Sandy - Wouldn't olive oil on your hands make the carrots slippery little devils?? :o} I'm betting it would work for the purple carrots because they seem so very much like beets.
Michelle - Well . . . let me say first that I've never been a fan of cooked carrots. Raw, I like them very much. I did taste test this big purple guy raw and I liked it very much, it was sweet. (I was really afraid these big ones might be woody, but it wasn't.) After it was cooked (the one carrot was enough for a serving for four!) I can't say I was crazy about it. Even with butter and salt and pepper. I thought the sweetness disappeared and it was kinda bland. We'll eat them raw cut into sticks or in a raw grated carrot salad, I think.
Rain - It's my old guilt conscience (that I'm working on banishing!) that is whispering that I'm bad for letting myself revel in my happy spot, as you say, when there are other things on my list I could/should be doing. I know, I know! I'm old enough (plus some!) to have gotten over it but I grew up with a parent who said I was "wasting my time" when I was drawing, designing, painting, creating . . . in general doing what took me to my happy place. Not complaining or looking for pity, it's just something I truly-duly want to rid myself of!! And I did say I was bad in jest . . . making fun of myself. So, yes, you were right, I did mean bad as in GOOD!
Trust me, I know it's hard to erase judgments made by people when we were growing up. I had a similar experience and it took me a long time to decide that I'm the one who deems what's wasting my time and what isn't. I don't think you're complaining, just talking. :))
There is plenty I could/should be doing right now, but I'm in my happy spot watching the dogs sleeping! The calm before the storm when I whisper..."anyone hungry?" :)
Dear Rain - Thank you for the good words!
You have such a good sense of humor. I can just picture you quietly whispering . . . "Anyone hungry?" And the flurry of five dogs getting up to stand at attention!
Winter fibernation is a good thing! You are so busy for the rest of the year, you deserve a break! Looking forward to seeing the results.
Ha, I almost thought they were beets. Yum. I use gloves now to avoid my hands discoloring. They do look good though. As for the crafting going on lately, we are swamped with rain. Lots of rain. Have fun!
Oh joy of joys! To spend hours crafting in your own room, what a lovely and productive way of spending the hours of winter!
My thoughts were exactly that - beets!! But no - carrots!! :) Glad to hear they were good to eat! I am the same way with my crafts - when I want to craft that's all I want to do. This weekend was perfect for just that considering all the snow we got. Yuck.
I am so glad you are able to spend so much time in your quilt room! (Isn't it interesting that, by switching one tiny letter, we go from quilt to guilt? - :) That is one interesting carrot. I prefer my carrots raw, too, unless they are steamed and mixed with mashed potatoes. Of course anything mixed with mashed potatoes is good!
Leigh - Winter fibernation!! I love it! (I also do a good imitation of a bear hibernating!) :o}
Kristina - We've got a sunny day today (Monday) which is so unusual so we're enjoying it to the hilt. It's so cool though (31 degrees) that I don't think much is going to dry up anymore until maybe spring!
Vera - I do declare I could stay in there for days at a time. If only someone would slide plates of food under the door now and then. ;o)
MrsDM - Will your snow stay on the ground for the season now or will it melt before "real" winter time arrives?
When I'm quilting, it's hard to pull my mind back to being aware of what's going on around me. I'm thoroughly enjoying myself at those times, but probably not so good for my dear husband when he tries to communicate with me!
Susan - Being so enamored with quilting, I'm very much aware of the proximity of the words "quilt" and "guilt!" Matter of fact, many times when trying to write/type one, I write/type the other! Helllppp!
I must be strange as I don't have "that thing" for mashed potatoes as so many people do. But give me a really good sandwich . . . and I'm in heaven!
We are so influenced by our upbringing. My Mom used to say if she didn't do something above and beyond her normal routine of cooking and cleaning, she had wasted a day. I think of that often, but it hasn't kept me from spending a lot of time just reading and doing a minimum of 'routine' chores. You deserve this time and besides you end up with a beautiful and useful thing. Enjoy your winter.
Glenda - More power to you, I say, for spending a lot of time reading and doing a minimum of daily chores! I'm going to remember your kind words while I'm enjoying this winter!
