Walking back toward our compost bin this morning, I spotted something on the side of the boards.
Talk about determination to seek out the sunshine to grow and flourish! You just can't keep these little Johnny-Jump-Ups down.
Methinks there is a lesson here to be learned.

Funny....I tried to get them started here but failed! It seems certain thinks just don't like my location.

We have a sunflower growing all twisty and turny through sticks on our burn pile!
Glenda - Yep, we all have certain things we can't grow that others can and things we can grow that others can't. (Did I say that right?)
Angela - Now that's a determined sunflower! And I've got sunflowers I planted in good soil free of weeds three times (!) this year . . . that didn't germinate!
Aww, that's sweet. I am always amazed (and a little perturbed) by the plants that will grow from a tiny crack. I have hollyhocks that will take hold and send roots to China in between the paving bricks in the front walk. -Jenn
Love those Johnny Jump Ups and yours have mastered the art of jumping up anywhere haven't they? They are also real pretty on a log of fresh Chevre
I love Johnny Jump-Ups. They grow profusely throughout the garden and yard. Even if nothing else does...
Johnny Jump-Ups are the most optimistic flower I know. And they thrive as weeds because I can't look in their cheery little faces and uproot them
I just love Johnny Jump Ups! We have a few here and there around the yard...I tell my husband when he is cutting our little patch of grass to NOT cut down those little lovely flowers. :)

Jenn - Send me your hollyhocks growing between your paving bricks! I have trouble getting them to grow for me even when I plant them in lovely soil!
Goatldi - I don't know about the leaves, but the blossoms are edible! Obviously, the medium in the compost bin is suitable for them.
Susan - This spring they were almost like a weed growing in all my raised beds and in the field garden. I couldn't bear to kill them so transplanted most of them.
SmartAlex - They darn near ruined my purple poppy bed this year because they came up so thickly in there, the poppies were nearly crowded out!
MrsDM - Ha! My husband feels the same way about cutting down dandelions because they are about the first flower our honey bees can work!
Rain - Oh, what a good picture you've painted in my mind!
We always have a few of those in our sidewalk cracks. I have pictures of one somewhere. Such a sweet little flower that seems to love growing and blooming in the most challenging spaces.
