Where To Start?

My husband ordered a bottle of eye drops, and the bottle arrived in the mail today.

In this box.

Eye drops in foreground.  Box behind it.

There is so much wrong with this situation, I don't know where to start.

Sometimes we get packaging like that from Amazon and then they want me to leave feedback on the packaging! I always figure they must have run out of the correct size boxes.

Leigh, I agree with you, Amazon uses boxes so out of proportion to what I buy it offends by "conservation" gene.

mmmmmmmmmmm perhaps they had a shortage on the coffee mug size? Would be perfect for that item leaving room for some padding too safety first.

Good grief. There is soooo much waste. I hope you sent feedback on that packaging.

Is this how they justify outrageous shipping rates? Let them know the packaging was grossly inappropriate! Geez.

I know. Do you have a backstop? You could save your cardboard for that, or just recycle it too.

Leigh - There is something wrong in the shipping department of big companies if they run out of a certain size box. Hrumpf.

Mama Pea said...

Sandy - Absolutely. There is no concern for our environment if the companies don't manage that particular part of their business better.

Goatldi - Personally, I think the little plastic bottle could have been put in a padded envelope and made the trip just fine.

Sue - Hubby says when they have robots doing the packing anymore . . . good heavens, I certainly hope that's not the case.

Susan - Yep, the way too high shipping rates from some companies actually keep me from ordering from them. When some seed companies, for instance, charge $10.95 shipping for 5 packets of seeds . . . even the handling costs of a quantity like that should not be that high.

Kristina - I'm happy to say we have a WONDERFUL recycling center where we can take (free of charge) all our cardboard. I'm more concerned as to how much *I* had to pay to get that cardboard here!

Mama Pea, it just goes along with all the lack of care that companies show these days. It's just waste in all aspects. Without sounding too dramatic, I think we live in a pillage-society, I can't stand it. I had an order from Walmart last summer that the warehouse filled so much and piled the stuff so badly that everything inside was damaged. It can go either way. Happy to say I've been Walmart-free for 4 months now. They were so happy to refund my $80 and let me keep the stuff rather than deal with the monkeys working in the warehouse.

Rain - Oh, so THAT'S the problem: MONKEYS working in the warehouse! ;o)

Rain said...

Lol...well, I wouldn't want to insult the primates too much, they are smarter than some humans hee hee...

Oh my goodness....I should say so.

Rain - You may have a point there! :o/

Where to start? My suggestions are 1) call the company and tell them of your dislike of the packaging, not just you, every one. 2) join freecycle if you have one as folks are always asking for boxes when they move. I get many boxes because of supplies ordered for work (librarian) and I save them up and put an offer out. They are always snapped up. 3) Can you (the all-of-you you) shop locally for the same product at the grocer/pharmacy/box store thus eliminating packaging all together? Recycling is great and better than the landfill but even better is not producing the trash in the first place.

Athanasia - Because of the area in which we live, we don't have a freecyle or Craigslist. Nor do we have a lot of choice but to do some of our shopping online. The nearest big box store for us is 130 miles away. In this way, the Internet is a blessing. We are fortunate to have a wonderful recycling center considering our low population and we take all unused cardboard there. It's not unusual to see folks hunting through the discarded cardboard boxes looking for one of a size they need so some of the throw-aways really do get recycled! You're correct in saying our society creates much unneeded trash though. Darn!

Mama Pea,

I agree, there's something wrong with this situation. Such a small bottle, and a very large box. Were they afraid the bottle would get lost in the delivery process?? Or was this to get a little more money from you for shipping. I would make a complaint....just saying.

Hugs,
Sandy

Sandy - The other side of the coin that always makes me wonder is when you pay a flat shipping fee no matter the size of your order and your order is small enough to come in a padded envelope that in no way should warrant the shipping fee of $12.99!
