Papa Pea was upstairs in his office
Even the adult geese are curious but pull in their necks when he whizzes by them.
Good grief! How the heck did this little duckling get out of the chicken house? He would have had to jump up at least 8" onto and negotiate two separate ramps from where he was hatched yesterday to make his way out-of-doors.

So what choice did we have but to put on rain gear, find the fishing net and go out to rescue him. Of course, once in the poultry yard, we couldn't immediately spot him. Papa Pea was (fearfully) scanning the pond when I saw him under some evergreen trees.
Once caught (and it wasn't easy as the little bugger is fast) he looked no worse for wear. He wasn't even wet!
As soon as he was put back in the chicken house, he scooted under his mama and is probably taking a long nap right now.
I was hoping to get a picture of some more of the little critters but no one was cooperating in the least bit. How can she possibly have a dozen (or so) little hatchlings under there?

Oh gosh look at that little fella! Poor him!!! Good thing Papa Pea was looking out the window! I'm sure you're right, he's going to nap the day away, what an adventure! I can't imagine a dozen babies under her! How long is she? Doesn't look too long!

Rain - No, she's not a particularly big duck. Maybe a foot long minus her tail.
Michelle - And we do have crows around, that's for sure!
Oh my gosh, glad you caught him. It's 38 degrees there? It's 80 here today, and storms.
Oh boy that must have made your heart race, especially if he could have gotten into some water. Maybe the reason why he was not wet was because he was running so fast? Dried himself off? :)

Oh my goodness, cuteness to the nth degree! Wonder if he grows up to be an explorer.

There's always something... He's a cute little fellow, though. That's amazing that mama duck has so many underneath her - she's quite the magician! -Jenn
Dawn - You can believe we watched with peeled eyes all day yesterday to make sure he didn't make another escape! Still can't figure out how something so small (and young) managed the escape he did!
Jenn - She's so protective of her brood that we've still to get a good count (or picture!) of her offspring. Gonna try again today.
We're still in the 30's at night, but it's 42 now. The sun is actually shining after 12 straight days of (intermittent) rain. The creeks are overflowing.
It is a good thing that chick looks like a bright little tennis ball so it made him easier to find!
Athanasia - We had another day of steady rain yesterday also, but the sun is shining today!
I'll try to get another duckling post up today. We got them moved to their own quarters a couple of hours ago. Much better.
Glad you rescued him! It is cold and raining here too. But we are just 50° not your frigid temperature. We were almost 80° recently.
Glenda - Our temps hit 60 today but with a wind that made it kinda chilly. You had ighty recently? Heck, we're lucky to have it that high on a hot summer's day! :o)
