The Wind

The winds during last night and today until noon were unpleasant.  Thirty to thirty-five mph sustained, gusts up near 50 mph.

Always seems worse during the night listening to the bumps, thumps, and unidentifiable crashes.

Five ladders were stored "temporarily" leaning against the end of the building.  They toppled over and knocked a drain pipe cattywampus.

Cold frames in storage at the end of the garden (where they've always been safe) got torn apart.

No serious damage.  Tarps blown off lumber piles, snow shovels found skittering their way toward Canada, stuff like that.

Is this March coming in like a lion a bit early?

Oh, I'm so sorry about the damage. The winds seem to be getting crazier and crazier, don't they?
Batten down, dear lady. This too shall pass!

We must be getting your leftovers. Highwinds were shrieking through the trees at 6:30, power went out, torrential rains with thunder. I thought this was February, I'm so confused.

A gift from Northern California. We had those last week but we took the 65 mph gust and toned it down for you. I love the sounds I hear as it is the wind in the pines resulting effect something like a locomotive on the property right by the bedroom windows. Glad the damage wasn't more. I usually find lots of down limbs (on occasion a down tree) barn cleaning implements scattered about but thankful due to weight they tend to fall straight down from where they hang. Get out the duck tape and velcro!!

It is more like late March or early April around here. We had a lot of wind yesterday, too. It blew my porch rugs around and it blew up a cushion or two, but mostly it's blowing around some kind of little fuzzy seed. Last year they were blown into my garden and started taking root. Hopefully, since the wind direction was different yesterday, I won't have that problem this year. Sorry about the damage to your cold frames. I hate that.

I'm glad you didn't get really bad damage. This winter is crazy. We had thunderstorms Friday with high 70's and then Saturday snow flurries and lows of 40's. I have a bad feeling sickness will return at the school. I hope your weather gets better.

Sue - Yes! We've had more high winds in the past couple of years than I can remember. We were lucky not to have any real damage though. I have a friend in California -- with all their rains and high winds, she says huge, old, lovely trees are toppling over and causing lots of damage to structures and utilities. Now that's real damage!

Susan - I thought for sure we were going to lose power yesterday due to trees going down on power lines, but we didn't. Light snow flurries this morning . . . and no wind! Yay!

Goatldi - You LOVE the sounds of the winds?! Maybe growing up in Illinois (tornado territory) taught me to go all queasy when I hear the high winds. Restocking the duct tape and velcro as we speak!

Laurie - Thinking of the seeds the wind planted in your garden last year . . . the wonder of Mother Nature, huh? One can see how the earth evolved before man stepped in!

Kristina - We certainly haven't had the extreme high temps (and then the lows) that you and bloggers in northern New York have had. Yes, it really is crazy. I know one thing for sure and that is that I don't like winds!

Well I was bred and born in California and even though I got the bejeebers scared out of me in a good Mid western electrical storm while visiting my mama's family farm at 13. We don't have too many tornados out here.

Mama Pea said...

Goatldi - Nor do we have tornadoes up here in northern Minnesota. That was one of the reasons we were glad to move here from Illinois!

Hmmm...was that your snow shovel I found on my driveway Mama Pea??? We've just been getting lots of rain, but I'm seeing bad weather in the next few days coming along. So sorry about that cold frame damage. I'll never forget the wind on Prince Edward Island, actually that was one of the biggest factor in me moving back to Quebec. That wind NEVER stopped. People brought up there were used to it, but I wasn't. 35 mph was nothing for them, I couldn't take it.

Wind, more than anything, keeps us from gardening chores. Especially cold wind. Glad there wasn't more damage for you guys.

Mama Pea said...

Rain - So THAT'S where our shovel ended up! ;o}

Good thing to know about Prince Edward Island. No, I wouldn't have liked that either. Do you know being out in the wind actually saps energy from you?

Mama Pea said...

DFW - Wind stresses plants, too!

Rain said...

Yes, it does sap energy and I can tell you from that year it is absolutely true. I just never got used to it. It could drive a gal nuts! Not to mention the wacky hairdos.

Yikes! Looks like the kind of spring winds we get around here. Those gusts can really rearrange things.

Sandy Livesay said...

Mama Pea,

Those winds were terrible! We even had bad winds. We don't like to see any form of damage after winds or a storm. It's a good thing no one was hurt from things being blown around. Everyone was inside the house. Are you able to reuse the plastic on the cold frames which were torn apart?

Hugs,
Sandy

Leigh - Some winds are welcomed in the spring because they do tend to help the "drying out" effect. But sometimes they just seem to go overboard!

Mama Pea said...

Sandy - Hubby trudged down there through the snow yesterday, but we haven't yet discussed how much we can salvage. I know some of the wood frames are now kindling!
