Now for pictures of our newest critters.
We got a phone call from the post office in town at 7:30 yesterday morning letting us know we had a package there from a hatchery.
Arriving at the post office building, Papa Pea was met at the back door by our Post Master holding the small box with a bit of a worried look on his face.
"I'm a little concerned," he said. "There hasn't been much peeping coming from the box."
Papa Pea told him that the box contained goslings rather than chicks, and they're not as vociferous as chicks usually are. And, no worry, all did turn out to be just fine.
The box contained four healthy looking goslings. Packed in fairly tightly, but I'm sure that helped keep them warm on their journey from Oklahoma all the way to northern Minnesota.
They are supposed to be two females and two males. The darker one is quite a bit smaller than the other three, and we're assuming she's a female. One of the other three (back left in picture above) has a smidge more shading of the darker coloring than the two very yellow ones (males we're presuming), but she's not much smaller than the boys are. Time will tell exactly what we've ended up with.
When you put your hand into the brooder near them, they don't seem shy at all but come running over to take a peck or two to check you out. They sure are cute little buggers!

Wait until they take a peck or two later on in the year. THEN hubby can bring his fork up!
:D
Sue - Good reminder! We DID take a fork (or two or six) to that one gander a couple of years ago that took a chunk out of the back of hubby's leg. (He still has an ugly scar from that "love peck.")
What is that word...? SQUEE!!!! I love baby poultry! I know what you mean - I was run down and attacked by a overzealous guard goose at a garden when I was small. It left an indelible mark on both my leg and memory.
Have neighbors in the country w/a guard goose. They painted "GO AWAY" on his 'under' wings so that when he came running at whatever venicle was approaching, w/wings all out, you got the message. They relocated him to another home after he 'pecked' at the 3 year old grandbaby. They sure are cute as babies though.
Susan - I am amazed that after that attack as a child you still are enamored with animals. That would be traumatic for most kids.
These Pilgrim geese are "supposed" to be extremely non-aggressive and mild-mannered. (Famous last words?)
DFW - No doubt about the fact that geese can be aggressive and a true hazard. As I mentioned above, the Pilgrim variety is touted as being more mild-mannered. We're really hoping that proves to be true.
We hand-fed our geese Meal worms when they were young so they were pretty friendly. Only time they got a bit nasty was when they were broody and protecting their eggs.
Thanks so much for picking my name out of the hat. I'm so excited to get it!
Mama Pea,
Congratulations Kathy!!
I love your little babies, they're so adorable. They came from Oklahoma?
They look like they're happy with their new home.
Anonymous - What a good idea to feed them meal worms to make them "tame." With my fear of worms, that might be a challenge! But thanks for the good idea.
Kathy - You're so welcome!
Sandy - We're considering using names from "Oklahoma" (the musical and movie) to name them!
